To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live with subtitles, create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio, send the video to it through an encoder, and deliver captions using a YouTube-supported live-caption method. YouTube documents two options: captions sent by HTTP POST to the live caption ingestion URL, or captions embedded in the video stream in EIA-608 and/or CEA-708. A subtitle file beside your video is not automatically a live caption track; the encoder and caption workflow must handle it.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days; check the current eligibility guidance because account policies can change. YouTube live-streaming tips.
  • A prerecorded video and an encoder that can play it as a live output, send that output to YouTube, and repeat the file if you want a continuous loop. YouTube’s documentation does not specify a universal loop command or guarantee that every encoder can loop local files.
  • A caption workflow compatible with one of YouTube’s documented live-caption delivery modes. Do not assume an SRT or VTT sidecar will be accepted automatically.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.

YouTube says creators do not need expensive equipment to start. The important requirement for this workflow is compatible software and a tested signal path, not a particular hardware purchase. YouTube live-streaming tips.

1. Create the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
  2. In the Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling gives you a watch page to share and promote before the event.
  3. Choose the encoder workflow and note the server URL and stream key YouTube provides. The stream key is the credential that lets your encoder send the feed to YouTube; keep it private. Set up your encoder for live streaming.

YouTube’s API distinguishes a broadcast, which represents the event, from a live stream, which holds delivery settings. Most creators can use Studio rather than the API; recurring broadcasts can reuse stream settings, while API resource creation is mainly useful for developers automating broadcasts. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

2. Configure the encoder for a prerecorded loop

Use an encoder that can read your recording, send a live feed to YouTube’s server URL using the stream key, and repeat playback. Enter the server URL and key exactly as shown in Studio. Loop controls and local-file support vary by encoder, so follow the selected software’s current instructions for setting playback to repeat; YouTube does not publish a universal loop setting.

Choose a stable video and audio output

YouTube recommends RTMPS for typical live content, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and supports up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Match resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder-settings table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. Your available upload bandwidth must sustain the chosen output. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into formats for viewers. YouTube encoder settings.

Make sure the encoder’s loop behavior does not interrupt output at the file boundary. Test the transition between the end and beginning of the recording; some files may create a pause, abrupt audio change, or caption-timing jump when playback restarts.

3. Choose a live-caption delivery method

YouTube’s LiveBroadcasts API documentation lists three caption settings. For captions, use either HTTP POST or embedded captions; the third setting disables captions. The API identifies delivery modes, not a general process for importing an SRT or VTT subtitle file into any encoder. YouTube LiveBroadcasts API reference.

Method How captions reach the broadcast What the workflow must support
HTTP POST Captions are sent to an ingestion URL associated with the livestream. The selected encoder or caption workflow must send captions to that endpoint. The cited API documentation does not specify a sidecar-file format.
Embedded captions Captions are encoded into the outgoing video stream. The encoder and output chain must embed EIA-608 and/or CEA-708 captions.
Disabled No live captions are delivered. Do not select this mode if viewers need captions.

For a prerecorded file, confirm how your chosen software turns its subtitles into one of the supported live-caption formats and maintains timing during playback and at the loop boundary. YouTube’s API reference does not establish that simply uploading a subtitle sidecar to the event will create live captions.

Set latency with captions in mind

YouTube’s API reference says closed captions are not supported with ultra-low latency. If captions are required, do not choose ultra-low latency; use normal or low latency and test the complete setup. The documentation does not guarantee that every third-party caption workflow will work under every other setting. YouTube LiveBroadcasts API reference.

4. Test the complete loop before announcing it

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health and messages. It also recommends checking the stream from channel or watch pages and mobile devices. YouTube live-streaming tips.

  1. Start the encoder and wait for the preview in the Live Control Room.
  2. Check video, audio levels, and stream-health messages in Studio.
  3. Watch captions against speech or other relevant audio to verify timing and readability.
  4. Let the recording reach its end and restart. Check for gaps, repeated or missing captions, and audio discontinuity at the loop boundary.
  5. Open the watch page on a separate device and confirm that the viewer experience matches the preview.

These loop-specific checks apply YouTube’s general testing advice to prerecorded playback; they are not a list of loop tests prescribed by YouTube.

5. Start, monitor, and end the stream

  1. Start sending the feed from the encoder. Confirm that the Live Control Room shows the incoming stream and preview.
  2. For a scheduled broadcast, select Go live after the preview appears. Monitor stream health, video, audio, and captions while it runs.
  3. When the program is finished, end the broadcast in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Copyright and reused-content checks for documentary footage

Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the video, music, archival clips, narration, and captions. A live format does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast material. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance and applicable copyright rules for your material. Also consider whether a channel built around repeated prerecorded programming offers meaningful original value to viewers; a loop is a delivery method, not a substitute for rights clearance or compliance with YouTube’s monetization policies.

Troubleshooting common problems

YouTube does not show an incoming signal

  • Check that the encoder is using the server URL and stream key from the correct broadcast.
  • Confirm the encoder is actually sending output and that the selected RTMPS connection is configured correctly.
  • If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key. YouTube describes the key as the credential used to send the feed. Encoder setup guidance.

The stream appears, but captions are missing

  • Confirm the broadcast is not set to disabled captions.
  • Verify that the workflow sends HTTP POST captions to the live caption ingestion URL or embeds EIA-608/CEA-708 captions in the outgoing video.
  • Check that your encoder and caption workflow support the chosen method; a sidecar subtitle file alone is not evidence that captions are being sent live.
  • Check the selected latency mode. Closed captions are not supported with ultra-low latency.

Captions are out of sync or break at the loop point

Check whether caption timing follows the media timeline when the encoder repeats playback. Retest from before the end of the file through the start of the next pass. If the selected encoder cannot preserve caption timing across repetition, use a workflow that can or prepare the program and captions in a compatible way before streaming.

Video stutters or stream health is poor

Compare the configured bitrate and resolution with YouTube’s current settings recommendations and confirm your upload connection can sustain them. Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor the Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. YouTube encoder settings.

The loop pauses or audio changes at the restart

Inspect the recording’s end and beginning and the encoder’s repeat behavior. A gap or abrupt transition may originate in playback or the source file rather than YouTube; verify it in a complete test before scheduling a public broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud
