Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can start recording a podcast with a phone or computer you already own. Record in a quiet space, listen back, and consider an external microphone only if the built-in one is not giving you the sound you want. Headphones can help you monitor a recording or conversation, but they are not a universal requirement. Your setup should follow your show’s format—not the idea that you need a studio before you can begin.
What you need for a first recording
- A phone or computer: Begin with a device you already have. YouTube’s creator equipment guidance recommends choosing gear around your goals and notes that the best equipment may be what you already own. YouTube’s video equipment tips are general creator guidance, not a podcast-specific equipment test.
- A place to record: Choose a quiet space and make a short test recording. Listen back before recording a full episode so you can decide whether your current setup is adequate.
- Optional headphones: Headphones can help you monitor your voice or hear a remote guest during a conversation. YouTube lists headphones among common creator streaming hardware, but that does not make them mandatory for every podcast.
Do not buy a complete kit simply to get started. Record a short sample first; upgrade when you can identify a limitation you want to fix.
What to upgrade first
Consider an external microphone if the built-in mic falls short
An external microphone is a sensible first upgrade to consider when you want a different voice sound than your phone or computer’s built-in microphone provides. YouTube includes external microphones in its general creator equipment guidance, but that source does not compare podcast microphones or identify a best model. Choose based on your recording situation and the connection your device supports rather than assuming a particular product or microphone type is right for everyone.
Add monitoring gear only if your workflow calls for it
If you record solo and can review the file afterward, you may not need headphones during the recording itself. For a remote conversation, headphones can make it easier to listen to the other person while speaking. Treat them as a practical monitoring choice, not a prerequisite.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Match the setup to your show
| Recording plan | Start with | What might be added |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, audio-only | Your existing phone or computer; record and review a short sample. | An external microphone if the built-in one does not meet your needs; headphones if you want to monitor while recording. |
| Remote guest | A computer or phone and a way to record the conversation. | Headphones for monitoring; an external microphone if your voice capture needs improvement. |
| Several people in one room | Plan around the number and placement of speakers. | Additional microphones or other audio equipment may be relevant as the production grows. YouTube’s guidance for professional live streams mentions setups with multiple microphones, cameras, mixers, and hardware encoders; it is not a beginner podcast shopping list. See YouTube’s encoder live-stream guide. |
| Video podcast | The audio setup you need to record the conversation. | A camera or lighting may become relevant if the video format requires them. Keep those choices separate from the question of how to capture clear audio. |
There is no single setup that fits every show. YouTube advises creators to keep costs down and upgrade as their needs develop; its equipment guidance does not establish a quantified performance ranking among room types, devices, or gear.
How a podcast gets onto YouTube
Recording equipment and publishing requirements are separate decisions. On YouTube, a podcast is a playlist of full episodes, and each episode is represented by a video. An MP3 alone cannot be turned into a YouTube podcast. You can upload episodes in YouTube Studio or, where available, connect an RSS feed; some hosting platforms provide YouTube distribution, and third-party tools may also be used. Check current feature availability and eligibility before choosing a publishing route.

A low-cost way to decide what to buy
- Record a short sample with your existing phone or computer in a quiet space.
- Listen back and identify a specific problem, if there is one.
- If the voice capture is the issue, consider an external microphone compatible with your device. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a best model.
- If you need to hear guests or monitor a live conversation, consider headphones; otherwise, review the recording afterward before deciding they are worth buying.
- For multiple speakers or video, add equipment only to meet the needs of that format.
This approach avoids spending on gear before you know what your recording process actually needs.
