To make OBS retry a YouTube stream after a connection drop, open Settings → Advanced, enable Automatic Reconnect, then set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. Retry Delay is the initial wait, not a fixed interval: OBS doubles the wait after each retry. The right retry count depends on how long you want OBS to keep attempting recovery; there is no universal recommended value.
Configure automatic reconnect in OBS
- Open the setting. In OBS, go to Settings → Advanced and find Automatic Reconnect. Turn it on. OBS documents the control in Advanced settings, but its exact arrangement can vary by OBS version or output mode. OBS overview
- Choose Retry Delay. This is how long OBS waits before its first retry. It is a starting wait, not a promise that every retry will occur at the same interval: OBS doubles the retry time on each attempt. OBS output reference
- Choose Maximum Retries. This sets the number of attempts OBS will make. Set it based on how long you want the software to keep trying. OBS does not prescribe one delay or retry count for every stream.
- Apply the settings and confirm that your stream is configured to use the intended YouTube broadcast before relying on reconnect behavior.
Because retry waits grow, a larger Maximum Retries value can allow recovery attempts to continue longer, but it does not create a fixed retry schedule. If you need to estimate the wait sequence, start with the configured delay and double it for each successive retry; the setting is still only an attempt policy, not a guarantee that OBS or YouTube will restore the broadcast.
Check YouTube’s broadcast behavior
OBS’s YouTube integration guidance says that Auto-stop on a scheduled broadcast can prevent reconnecting later to that same broadcast. For a workflow that needs reconnection after an interruption, check whether Auto-stop should be disabled for that scheduled stream. YouTube may still end a broadcast after multiple hours without incoming stream data, so leaving Auto-stop off does not keep a broadcast open indefinitely. OBS YouTube live streaming guide
If OBS keeps retrying, troubleshoot the connection
Automatic reconnect helps OBS attempt recovery; it cannot repair a network that repeatedly loses or cannot sustain the connection. Diagnose the likely cause before simply increasing the wait or retry count.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Lower bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it
OBS identifies unstable connectivity or a bitrate higher than the connection can sustain as possible causes of dropped frames. Its troubleshooting guide suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when lowering bitrate. That is general OBS troubleshooting guidance, not an official YouTube bitrate specification or a guarantee. Leave upload headroom for other network use, and check the streaming service’s limits. OBS also describes Dynamic Bitrate as a fallback that can reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up. It does not resolve the underlying network problem and may reduce video quality.

Prefer a wired connection when Wi-Fi is unstable
OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. If you already use Ethernet, consider whether the cable or another part of the network path is faulty. OBS lists faulty network hardware among possible causes of interruptions. OBS dropped frames guidance
Check software and network settings methodically
OBS lists software interference and faulty network hardware among possible causes. Its troubleshooting guide also describes Windows-only network optimization and TCP pacing settings that some users report may help; treat these as tests, not established fixes. Keep Bind to IP at Default. If testing IPv4-only makes no difference, return IP Family to IPv4 and IPv6. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affects the problem. Common reconnect problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS retries at increasingly long intervals | That is the documented Retry Delay behavior; the wait doubles on each attempt. | Choose a starting delay and Maximum Retries that suit the interruption you are willing to tolerate. |
| Dropped frames recur before a disconnect | The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. | Use OBS’s bitrate guidance, test a wired connection, and inspect the network path. |
| OBS reconnects, but the scheduled YouTube broadcast will not accept it | Auto-stop may prevent reconnection to that broadcast. | Check Auto-stop for the intended workflow; remember a broadcast may still end after multiple hours without incoming data. |
| Changing retry timing does not stop interruptions | Retry settings affect attempts, not the cause of network failure. | Investigate upload stability, software interference, cables, and network hardware. |
| Dynamic Bitrate reduces drops but the picture looks worse | Dynamic Bitrate can reduce quality and does not fix the root cause. | Use it only as a fallback while addressing the connection issue. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
