Before you start, confirm your channel is eligible, configure the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, test the audio and connection, and clear the rights for every song and recording. Devotional or traditional subject matter does not by itself make music copyright-free.
Choose the broadcast method
YouTube offers mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streaming. For a radio-style program assembled from audio and a title card, image, or other visual, an encoder is often a practical fit. The best choice depends on how your audio is produced; YouTube’s documented method categories do not determine your music rights.
- Mobile: useful for a direct broadcast from a phone.
- Webcam: useful for a computer-based camera stream.
- Encoder: useful when combining audio, visuals, and overlays into a program feed.
YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output, but HLS is a specialized choice for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP; it is not required for a basic radio-style broadcast. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP. Use a protocol and settings supported by both your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube’s live encoder guidance explains the options.
Check your channel’s eligibility
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The person streaming must be at least 16. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio before planning a broadcast, because restrictions may prevent you from going live. Requirements can change, so confirm them in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance shortly before your stream.

Clear rights for the music and recordings
Identify every song, recording, performance, and visual element you plan to use. YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility for the necessary rights on the streamer, including music licensing rights and applicable requirements in the territory of the broadcast. The terms say the provider must have rights for use on Google services throughout the world; that does not mean every creator’s license is worldwide.
Composition rights and rights in a particular sound recording can differ. A traditional devotional song, a new arrangement, and a commercial recording of that song may each raise different rights questions. The rights status of any particular Tamil song or recording cannot be inferred just from its genre or age. Check the permission’s scope for live streaming, territories, and any archived or replayed version with the relevant rights holders.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if the material continues or a relevant strike occurs. For licensed third-party content, YouTube says the rights holder should add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. Do not assume that an ordinary upload license, a Content ID dispute, or a Creator Music track authorizes a live broadcast: Creator Music’s published terms say covered videos cannot be live streams.
Read YouTube’s live-streaming and Content ID guidance and its livestream terms and conditions, then confirm rights directly with the relevant rights holders. YouTube’s platform guidance cannot decide whether your particular repertoire is cleared.

Set up the stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to reach Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and review its available settings.
- Choose a stream protocol and settings that your encoder supports and that match YouTube’s current encoder guidance. For a basic stream, prioritize a stable connection and tested audio over a high resolution that adds no value to a radio-style program.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. A stream key is a credential that connects your encoder to YouTube: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Prepare the audio and visual feed in the encoder, then start its stream output. Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm that the event details and audience visibility are correct before going live.
YouTube’s Live Control Room guidance covers stream settings and keys. Treat the labels and options shown in your account as authoritative if YouTube updates its interface.
Configure and test the audio and connection
For general RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo, and a stereo audio bitrate of 128 kbps. These are platform recommendations, not a universal minimum or a guarantee of sound quality. Test with the actual encoder and connection, listening for clear vocals, balanced levels, clipping, dropouts, and the dynamics of the music.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth capacity beyond the bitrate you select. Check your outbound upload speed under the conditions you expect during the broadcast; a speed test result alone does not guarantee a stable stream. If the connection is marginal, reduce the stream bitrate or simplify the video feed rather than running at the edge of available capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips for current guidance.
- Run a test stream before the scheduled broadcast; YouTube recommends testing, including a stream set to unlisted or public.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and confirm that the audio and visual are present and synchronized.
- Open the event page from your channel and check it on a phone as well as on the device you used to create it.
- During the broadcast, monitor stream health and audio/video quality. Watch for YouTube warnings and respond if the stream is interrupted or a third-party match appears.
Operate the broadcast and review the archive
If YouTube flags third-party material during the live stream, stop or replace the affected content rather than assuming the broadcast can continue uninterrupted. After a stream ends, review YouTube Studio notifications and the archived video: YouTube may make Content ID claims after the live session is complete. Recheck permissions before reusing a program or changing its territory or rights status.

Troubleshooting common problems
