How to Stream a Looping Slideshow to YouTube Live with OBS

Use OBS’s Image Slide Show source to display and loop still images on YouTube Live, then test your encoder settings and stream health before going live.

To stream a looping slideshow to YouTube Live with OBS, add an Image Slide Show source, add your images, leave Loop enabled, connect OBS to a YouTube broadcast, and test the stream before going live. OBS runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streams.

1. Build the slideshow scene in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and select the scene that will carry the broadcast. If you do not have one, create a scene in the Scenes panel.
  2. In Sources, select the plus button and choose Image Slide Show. Give the source a clear name, then confirm.
  3. In the source properties, use the plus control to add individual image files or directories. OBS documents support for BMP, TGA, PNG, JPEG, JPG, and GIF.
  4. Arrange or resize the source in the preview so the images fit the canvas as intended. Check for cropping, letterboxing, or unwanted margins.

The Image Slide Show source is designed for a set of still images. For files already rendered as one video, use an OBS Media Source and enable looping. For a playlist, OBS VLC Video supports playlists and has Loop Playlist on by default, but VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources

2. Set playback, timing, and transitions

In the Image Slide Show properties, choose the playback mode and presentation behavior. OBS’s documented defaults are automatic slide mode, fade transition, 8,000 milliseconds between slides, 700 milliseconds of transition speed, and playback while the source is not visible.

  • Slide Mode: Choose automatic playback for a hands-off presentation. Manual or hotkey-based control suits a presentation where someone will advance images.
  • Time Between Slides: Set how long each image remains before the transition. OBS’s documented default is 8,000 ms.
  • Transition and Transition Speed: Choose a transition that suits the material, then adjust its duration. The documented default transition is fade, with a 700 ms transition speed.
  • Randomize Playback: Leave random playback off for a documentary sequence, timeline, or any slideshow where image order matters. Turn it on only when the order is intentionally flexible.
  • Visibility behavior: Decide whether playback should continue when the source is not visible. The documented default is to always play while not visible.
  • Loop: Keep this enabled to restart the slideshow after its final image. OBS lists Loop as on by default.
  • Hide when slideshow is done: This defaults off. With Loop enabled, the slideshow restarts rather than reaching a finished state.

Defaults are starting points, not requirements; inspect the current properties in your installed OBS version. OBS’s Image Sources documentation describes the slideshow source and its controls.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Connect OBS to a YouTube Live broadcast

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to use. Follow YouTube’s current prompts for account eligibility and broadcast setup.
  2. Connect OBS using its YouTube service integration, or enter the connection information YouTube provides for the broadcast. The exact screens and labels can change, so follow the current interfaces rather than relying on old walkthroughs.
  3. If using a stream key, copy it into OBS’s stream connection settings and keep it private. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your broadcast.
  4. Start streaming from OBS and confirm that YouTube receives the signal in its preview or status area. Start or schedule the public broadcast through YouTube’s current controls as appropriate.

YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS encoder streams and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder settings guidance covers supported protocols and encoding settings. A 2015 OBS forum guide describes an older workflow, but its UI labels and timing details may no longer match current YouTube or OBS screens: OBS forum guide.

4. Choose stream settings that your connection can sustain

Set OBS’s output to a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that your computer and upload connection can maintain. YouTube recommends running a speed test, but a speed-test result is not itself proof of a stable stream: network conditions can vary, so leave upload headroom and test the actual broadcast settings.

Example stream YouTube recommended bitrate Qualification
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps YouTube’s current encoder guidance, in the recommended H.264 and AV1/H.265 column.
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps for H.264; 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps for H.264; 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

These are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates, not a guarantee of stability on a given connection. Its current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; up to 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full settings applicable to your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec.

A still slideshow does not automatically benefit from a high frame rate. Choose resolution and frame rate for the presentation you want and can reliably deliver. If low latency matters for an interactive broadcast, note YouTube’s guidance that 4K/2160 streams do not offer the “improve for low latency” option and are optimized for quality at normal latency.

5. Test the loop and the incoming stream before the event

  1. Preview the OBS scene. Confirm the images are displayed correctly, in the intended order, with the desired timing and transitions.
  2. Watch the source pass its final image and return to the first image. This verifies the loop rather than merely assuming the setting is enabled.
  3. Send a test stream using the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate planned for the event. Inspect YouTube’s incoming preview and stream status.
  4. If the program includes audio, include it in the test and listen for the expected source and level.
  5. During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream health and read any messages shown in the Live Control Room.

YouTube’s guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” It also advises monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube encoder guidance

6. Check computer compatibility and workload

OBS’s published baseline requirements (documentation dated 2021-08-25) list Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 (“Big Sur”) or later on Intel or Apple Silicon with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland. OBS cautions that meeting baseline requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record successfully. CPU load varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. For hardware-specific starting settings, OBS points users to Tools → Auto Configuration Wizard. Check the current OBS system requirements as requirements may change.

7. Troubleshoot common slideshow and stream problems

  • Images do not appear: Reopen the Image Slide Show properties and confirm that files or directories were added. Check that the image formats are among those OBS documents and that the source is visible in the scene.
  • The sequence stops at the final image: Check that Loop is enabled. If the source is set to hide after completion, review that option as well.
  • Images appear in an unexpected order: Disable random playback if sequence matters, then check the selected files or directories in the source properties.
  • Slides change too quickly or slowly: Adjust the time between slides. Change transition speed separately if the fade or other transition takes too long or feels abrupt.
  • YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: Confirm OBS is connected to the intended broadcast and that the current stream connection information is correct. Keep the stream key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it through YouTube’s controls and update OBS.
  • The incoming stream is unstable or reports health warnings: Test at the chosen settings, reduce bitrate or output demands if the upload cannot sustain them, and verify the encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Continue monitoring stream health.
  • A VLC playlist source does not work: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream rather than a broadcast that depends on OBS staying open, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
