FFmpeg YouTube Live Loop Audio Out of Sync: How to Diagnose and Fix It

A fixed audio offset, accumulating drift, and a jump at each loop need different checks. Inspect stream metadata and FFmpeg timing before changing your command.

First determine whether the audio is out of sync by a steady amount, drifts farther out over time, or jumps at each loop. Those are different problems: a fixed delay may call for a measured offset, while accumulating drift or a loop-boundary jump calls for checking timestamps, frame synchronization, and the source file. There is no reliable one-command fix without your FFmpeg command, version, and media details.

Classify the sync problem before changing anything

  • Fixed offset from the start: The audio is consistently early or late by roughly the same amount. Check the streams’ start times first; consider an offset only after measuring which stream leads and by how much.
  • Growing drift: Audio and video begin close together but separate progressively. Investigate timing and rate behavior, source timestamps, frame-rate conversion, and output synchronization. A one-time delay cannot correct a mismatch that keeps changing.
  • Jump at each repeat: Sync changes when the video loops. Inspect the track boundaries and timestamp continuity around the loop point.
  • Only YouTube appears out of sync: Compare local playback with YouTube’s Live preview and stream-health indicators. This helps distinguish behavior in the source or encoder from what you observe downstream; it does not by itself identify the cause.

These patterns guide diagnosis; they do not establish a cause for a stream whose command and media are unknown. Save your current command and note your FFmpeg version before troubleshooting. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what affected the result.

Inspect the media’s audio and video timelines

Use ffprobe to inspect the input before altering timestamps. Record the audio and video stream codecs, start times, durations, audio sample rate, and video frame-rate and time-base information. Compare the streams’ start times and durations rather than assuming they begin and end together.

YouTube’s [troubleshooting guidance for audio and video not syncing](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702) notes that unequal audio and video track durations can prevent them from syncing and advises editing the tracks so their durations match. Treat that as a useful source-file check, not proof that duration differences explain every live-loop problem.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Listen to or inspect the beginning and the section immediately before and after the repeat. A jump at that boundary points you toward the file’s track boundaries and timestamp continuity there. Smoothly increasing drift points more toward the streams’ timing relationship or output sync behavior. These are diagnostic inferences, so confirm them against the actual media and logs.

Check how FFmpeg loops and synchronizes streams

Confirm the loop applies to the intended input

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option. Check that it appears before the input it is meant to loop, and inspect the stream mapping to confirm the intended audio and video are both sent to the output. FFmpeg notes that mapping can affect which stream’s timestamps are used for synchronization. -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping; it is not a general-purpose audio-sync correction.

Review output frame synchronization

FFmpeg’s -fps_mode controls video frame synchronization. The documented modes include:

  • passthrough: pass demuxer timestamps through.
  • cfr: duplicate or drop frames to achieve the requested constant frame rate.
  • vfr: pass timestamps through or drop frames to avoid duplicate timestamps.
  • auto: select a mode based on what the muxer supports.

These modes affect video timing; they are not interchangeable audio-delay fixes. FFmpeg also cautions that a muxer may further modify timestamps. Choose settings based on your input and delivery needs, and consult the documentation for your installed build. The current FFmpeg documentation marks the older -vsync option as deprecated; where applicable, use the per-stream -fps_mode approach described for your version. FFmpeg command-line documentation.

FFmpeg’s documentation describes synchronizing streams to an unchanged stream: “You can leave either video or audio unchanged and sync the remaining stream(s) to the unchanged one.” That explains an available approach, not which stream should be the reference for your case. Decide only after identifying the timing problem.

Use FFplay and logs to observe drift

FFplay’s -stats output includes playback position and audio/video synchronization drift. Use it to observe whether drift changes during local playback. It is a diagnostic observation, not a guarantee that YouTube’s live ingest will behave identically. FFplay also documents master-clock selection as mainly a debugging option, rather than a universal repair. See the FFplay documentation.

Review the FFmpeg output and error logs alongside the media metadata. Look for timestamp warnings or unexpected frame handling, then compare local playback with YouTube’s preview. Do not introduce a guessed -itsoffset, audio delay, or resampling correction before establishing which stream is early and whether the offset is constant.

Verify YouTube’s encoder settings and connection

YouTube’s general encoder settings guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists AAC or MP3 audio and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio; the listed recommended audio bitrates are 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a diagnosis of sync drift. Test with representative audio and video, then monitor stream health.

For setup, YouTube’s live encoder instructions say to enter the stream URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a private credential: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is operational context, not a sync remedy.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. If connection diagnostics point to a transport problem, check that the server URL is correct and that your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance discusses port 443 where an SSL connection requires it. Do not switch protocols as a sync fix unless connection evidence points to a transport issue.

Follow this troubleshooting sequence

  1. Preserve the baseline. Save the command line and note the installed FFmpeg version.
  2. Classify the symptom. Decide whether the offset is stable, grows over time, or returns at every loop boundary.
  3. Inspect the input. Compare audio and video start times, durations, sample rate, frame rate, and timestamp/time-base metadata.
  4. Audit the command. Check input-option placement for -stream_loop, stream mapping, timestamp handling, and frame-sync options against the documentation for your FFmpeg build.
  5. Observe playback. Where useful, run local playback with FFplay statistics and compare it with YouTube’s Live preview and stream-health indicators.
  6. Check the live configuration. Confirm the server URL, protocol, audio format, CBR, keyframe interval, and relevant sample rate; run a representative test.
  7. Change one variable at a time. Apply a measured offset only for a stable, measured offset. If the mismatch grows, investigate timing or rate behavior instead of adding a fixed delay.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube loop, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.

What to include when asking for a specific fix

A precise correction depends on the command, media, and observed behavior. To make a diagnosis actionable, share the FFmpeg version, command with the stream key removed, relevant audio and video metadata, which stream leads, the approximate offset, and whether it stays constant, grows, or jumps at the loop. Include whether the mismatch is present in local playback or only in YouTube’s preview.
