To put a countdown inside an actual YouTube Live broadcast, build it into the encoder output: in OBS, loop your video in a Media Source, place a countdown visual above it, then switch to the unobstructed loop when the countdown reaches zero. YouTube’s native countdown is for Premieres, not a general countdown control for encoder-based Live streams. A scheduled Live trailer is a separate pre-show feature.
Choose the right kind of countdown
First decide whether you need a Premiere, a pre-show trailer, or a countdown visible in the live video feed. These options behave differently:
| Approach | What viewers see | Best fit | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Premiere countdown | YouTube’s countdown theme, followed by a scheduled uploaded video | A coordinated release of a prerecorded documentary or other video where a Premiere watch page and chat suit the event | It is not composited into an encoder-based Live stream, and the countdown theme is not part of the video afterward. YouTube: Customize your Premiere |
| Scheduled Live trailer | A trailer on the scheduled Live stream’s watch page before the broadcast | A pre-show for an eligible channel | It is a trailer, not a countdown documented to overlay the live feed. YouTube: Manage live stream settings |
| Encoder countdown overlay | A countdown scene sent as part of the live feed, followed by the looping video | An actual YouTube Live broadcast where the opening countdown must appear in the video itself | Requires an encoder scene and a countdown source. OBS documents media and text sources, but not a built-in configurable countdown timer. OBS Sources Guide |
Use a Premiere for a synchronized video release
YouTube’s Premiere countdown theme begins at the scheduled time and runs for the chosen duration; viewers then watch the video together. The theme is a YouTube presentation element, not footage added to the uploaded video. To set one up, upload the video, schedule it as public, select Set as Premiere, then choose Set up Premiere to select a countdown theme and length. YouTube says viewers see a live countdown two minutes before a Premiere starts. YouTube: Premiere a new video
Use a Live trailer for a pre-show on the watch page
For a scheduled Live stream, YouTube can show a trailer on the watch page before the broadcast begins. The feature requirements page lists eligibility as more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes, and gives a trailer duration of 15 seconds to 3 minutes. These are YouTube’s stated requirements; confirm current eligibility and Studio controls before relying on them. YouTube: Schedule video publish time

Use OBS when the countdown must be in the live feed
Choose this approach when viewers must see the countdown in the outgoing broadcast immediately before the loop. The countdown and the video have to be composed in the encoder scene; scheduling alone does not insert a timer into the feed.
Build the countdown and loop in OBS
- Prepare the sources. Have the local video file you want to loop and a countdown source, such as a prepared countdown video, graphic, or text. Decide how the countdown source will end or be hidden at zero so the underlying loop is revealed. OBS documentation supports media and customizable text sources, but does not establish a native countdown timer widget; use a timer asset, script, or other source whose behavior you have verified.
- Add the looping video. In your OBS scene, add a Media Source, choose the local video file, and open its properties. Turn on Loop. OBS describes this option as repeating the file after playback completes. For a playlist rather than one file, use a VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed for that source to appear. OBS: Media Sources
- Place the countdown above the video. Add the countdown source to the same scene and position it above the Media Source in the source list. Arrange and size it so it is legible without obscuring essential content. For a countdown video, check whether it ends, loops, or needs to be hidden manually; do not assume it will reveal the video at zero automatically.
- Create the handoff. Decide how you will remove or hide the countdown at zero. You can use a prepared countdown clip that ends on the desired frame or switch to a second OBS scene containing only the looping video. Test the transition so the loop is already playing underneath and appears at the intended moment.
- Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or open the scheduled stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings, then start streaming from the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, screen captures, or the stream output. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Preview before the event. Start the encoder, check the preview in Live Control Room, and verify picture and audio. Confirm that the countdown is visible, the loop is playing, and the transition works before starting the public broadcast.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. These are platform recommendations, not minimum technical requirements. Use the time to preview in Live Control Room and check audio and video. YouTube: Streaming tips
Before the public event, test the full sequence in a private or unlisted setup where available. Watch the handoff as a viewer, not only in the OBS canvas: confirm the countdown reaches zero as intended, the looping video is visible afterward, and no desktop or setup screen appears between them.

Troubleshoot common countdown and loop problems
- The countdown does not appear in the YouTube feed. Check that its source is in the active OBS scene, above the video source, and visible. A Premiere countdown or scheduled Live trailer appears on YouTube’s presentation/watch page; neither is a substitute for an encoder overlay in the broadcast feed.
- The video stops after one play. Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, check that the VLC Video Source is available and Loop Playlist is enabled.
- The video is visible through the countdown. Check source order and opacity, or use a full-screen countdown asset. If the countdown is meant to sit over the documentary rather than cover it, confirm that this is the intended look.
- The countdown remains after zero. The timer asset may not end or hide itself. Use a source with verified end behavior, or switch scenes at zero; rehearse the action so it reveals the already-looping video cleanly.
- OBS is streaming but YouTube has no usable preview. Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm that the scheduled stream is open in Live Control Room, and inspect the preview before the event. Keep the key private.
- The trailer option is unavailable. The feature has channel eligibility conditions. Check YouTube’s current requirements and Studio interface rather than assuming every channel can add a trailer.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that continuously plays uploaded videos, rather than a one-off countdown-and-loop opening that you control in OBS, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
