Test the picture, audio and connection before going public. This guide covers the complete setup and a cloud alternative for keeping the stream running.
Before you start: check channel and file readiness
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions within the past 90 days. The stated minimum age for live streaming is 16. First-time activation can take time, so confirm access before the day of your broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements explain channel readiness.
- Have the finished video file available on the computer that will run OBS. Confirm you have rights to both the visuals and any music or other audio in it.
- Use an internet connection with enough stable upload capacity for the chosen encoder settings, plus headroom. A local test cannot guarantee that a longer broadcast will remain uninterrupted.
Set up the looping video in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, add a Media Source. Select the local video file in its properties.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS describes this setting as replaying the file when playback completes; it is not a YouTube setting. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Fit the source to the canvas and play it. Check that the video fills the frame as intended and that the audio is present, at a comfortable level and free of unwanted gaps or abrupt changes at the loop point.
Create the YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and use the Stream tab to create a stream or schedule one.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s encoder setup. The key directs your encoder’s feed to the right stream, so treat it like a password: do not show it on screen or share it.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If you need to enter the server manually, use the stream URL supplied by YouTube in the encoder settings. Labels can vary by OBS version.
- In OBS, open Settings > Output and set the encoder output to a resolution, frame rate and bitrate your computer and upload connection can sustain. For the connection protocol, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its guidance also recommends constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before setting values.
A practical starting point for a simple relaxation stream
YouTube’s encoder table recommends 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, with a listed range of 2–6 Mbps for that row. This is a platform recommendation, not a guaranteed result. The right setting depends on the video, encoding load and actual connection quality. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for different playback formats, so choose a stable feed rather than pushing a bitrate your connection cannot maintain.
Run an upload-speed test and leave about 20% upload bandwidth headroom, as YouTube’s streaming guidance recommends. Count any simultaneous primary and backup stream traffic as well. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Test, go live and monitor the broadcast
- Start the encoder in OBS before the scheduled event or intended public start. For a private check, use the available privacy or test options in YouTube Studio.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the right scene and video appear, the audio meters move as expected, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming signal.
- Check the watch page and playback on a mobile device, including whether the audio is understandable at ordinary listening levels and the video displays correctly.
- When the preview is right, select Go live in Live Control Room. Keep an eye on stream health and the audio/video output during the broadcast.
- To finish, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; check the resulting archive in YouTube Studio if you need it.
Make the stream original and rights-safe
A looping file is a technical playback choice, not proof of a health benefit. Do not describe aromatherapy as treating, preventing or curing a condition unless you have suitable evidence for that claim.

YouTube requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Separately, its monetization policy warns that highly repetitive, interchangeable or template-like material with little creative, educational, narrative or commentary value may not be eligible for monetization. A loop alone does not determine a channel’s eligibility. Make the overall presentation meaningfully original, and use only visuals and audio you are authorized to stream. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
OBS or a dedicated hardware encoder?
For a prerecorded loop, OBS is a practical option if you already have a suitable computer and want control over scenes and encoding. A dedicated hardware encoder is another approach, but YouTube’s guidance for professional-grade hardware encoders is aimed at higher-production events; a simple file loop does not, by itself, establish a need to buy one. Compare the options against your existing equipment, setup comfort, reliability needs, production controls and budget.
