Use OBS on a compatible Mac mini to encode a continuous video-and-audio feed, then send it to YouTube Live over RTMPS. Before launch, confirm your channel can livestream, clear music rights for the intended use, set a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and test how your Mac and network behave during extended operation. A Mac mini’s hardware capabilities do not by themselves guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 streaming.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A Mac mini that meets the current OBS requirements: an Intel or Apple Silicon processor and macOS 11 Big Sur or later, according to the OBS system requirements. Compatibility does not guarantee that every computer can handle every resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene.
- A verified YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled and no livestream restrictions in the preceding 90 days, as described in YouTube’s live-streaming tips. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until launch day; see YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the full stream bitrate, plus headroom.
- Audio and visual material you have the rights to livestream on YouTube. A consumer music subscription or a generic “royalty-free” label is not proof that livestream use is cleared.
Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications document a hardware video encode engine and model-dependent Ethernet options. Those specifications describe capabilities, not a test showing that a particular Mac mini can run a particular 24/7 stream without interruption. You do not need to buy a new Mac mini if your existing machine meets OBS’s requirements and performs reliably in your own extended test.
Configure YouTube Live and OBS
1. Enable livestreaming and create the broadcast
- Complete YouTube channel verification and enable livestreaming ahead of time. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a livestream. Choose the intended visibility and audience settings for your channel.
- In the stream setup, retrieve the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
2. Install OBS and connect the stream
OBS is a documented Mac-compatible encoder option. The OBS requirements page lists Intel or Apple Silicon CPUs and macOS 11 or later; check the OBS macOS versions page and the current OBS release information for compatibility with your specific macOS version.
- In OBS, add the visual for the radio channel, such as a still image or restrained animation, and configure the audio source that will play your cleared music.
- Open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key from Live Control Room. If configuring a custom destination, use the stream URL supplied by YouTube and the matching key.
- In OBS output and video settings, choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your machine and network can sustain. Use the encoder and protocol combination supported by the YouTube ingest settings.
- Start OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public or relying on it as a continuous channel.
Choose video and audio settings that fit a radio stream
For a static cover or gently moving visual, 720p30 is a sensible starting point, not a YouTube requirement. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. A higher resolution is not automatically better for a mostly still image; test the actual visual and audio before settling on a setting.

These figures are YouTube encoder recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality, uninterrupted operation, or a particular viewer experience. YouTube transcodes the incoming live feed into viewer formats. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings table, and inspect the actual preview, audio level, and stream-health status.
Plan upload capacity and test the connection
Measure upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends keeping the total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. If you send a backup feed at the same time, include its bitrate in the capacity plan. The recommendation and testing guidance are in YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Prefer wired Ethernet where available for a stationary Mac mini. Apple lists Ethernet specifications by Mac mini model and configuration; check your exact model rather than assuming every unit has the same port speed.
- Run a real test with the intended scene, music, resolution, and bitrate. A speed test alone cannot show whether the complete setup is stable.
- Start the encoder before the planned public start, check the Live Control Room preview, and monitor audio and video rather than assuming a successful initial connection will remain healthy.
- For a 24/7 schedule, extend the test beyond a short preview. Deliberately test the consequences of an internet interruption and a Mac restart so you know how your exact setup recovers.
Clear music rights before you broadcast
Rights clearance is a prerequisite for the stream, not merely a monetization concern. YouTube’s livestream terms say that the creator must have the necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Make sure the permission covers YouTube livestreaming, the territories where you intend to broadcast, and any other uses you plan to make of the material.
YouTube also scans live broadcasts for third-party content. Its copyright guidance for live streams explains that a licensed track can still trigger interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Where applicable, arrange that allowlisting with the rights owner before going live. Do not assume that a track being available on a personal streaming service, or described as royalty-free, grants the required broadcast rights.

What 24/7 operation on a Mac mini requires
A local encoder means you are responsible for keeping the Mac, power, network, OBS, and media playback running and checking the broadcast. The cited Apple and OBS specifications do not establish a Mac-specific procedure that prevents sleep, launches OBS after a reboot, or restarts a crashed stream. Test macOS power behavior and any recovery automation on your exact machine instead of relying on an unverified recipe.
Also decide whether you need a complete archive. The cited official sources do not establish how YouTube currently preserves an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. If retaining the whole program matters, plan a separate local recording or rolling-file strategy and confirm YouTube’s current archive behavior before depending on it.

Troubleshooting common problems
