Dynamic range in video is the span between the darkest and brightest image information that can be captured or displayed with useful detail. The phrase can describe a camera’s capture range or a screen’s display range, and those are not the same thing. A camera may record more tonal information than a particular screen can show at once.
What dynamic range means in video
Think of a scene with a bright window and a dim room. The camera has to represent both the highlights near the window and the shadows indoors. Dynamic range describes the brightness span between the darkest and brightest parts of the image. Blackmagic Design describes that span in stops.
In practice, the useful detail at either end matters: a bright area that clips to featureless white has lost highlight detail, while a shadow buried in noise may not be usable. More dynamic range can give a filmmaker more room to preserve and shape tonal detail, but it does not guarantee a particular look or recover information that was never recorded.
Capture range and display range are different
Camera and recording pipeline
A camera’s sensor and recording pipeline determine how much scene brightness information survives capture before highlights clip or shadows become too noisy. A published stop count is specific to a camera and measurement method; it is not a universal score that can be compared fairly without context.

Monitor, television, and delivery
A display can reproduce only the range its capabilities and signal path allow. ARRI describes an SDR monitor as showing about eight stops, while Apple’s Motion guide describes SDR as roughly 6 to 10 stops with maximum luminance around 100 nits. These are source-specific descriptions, not a single exact limit for every SDR display.
ARRI’s example makes the distinction clear: it says the ALEXA 35 captures 17 stops, while an SDR monitor shows about eight. Those figures describe different parts of the imaging chain and should not be read as a direct comparison of equivalent measurements. Footage can contain more tonal information than a target display can show at once, so the image may need a transform or grade for the intended screen.
What a stop tells you
A stop is an exposure step. In ordinary exposure terms, changing exposure by one stop doubles or halves the amount of light. A camera’s dynamic-range figure is often expressed as a number of stops to describe the brightness span it can capture, though the exact count depends on the camera’s settings and how the range was measured.

ARRI explains that its Log C encoding maps exposure in stops to equal signal increments over a wide range: “Each stop of exposure increases the signal by the same amount.” That describes how values are encoded, not an increase in the sensor’s physical capture range.
Dynamic range is not the same as HDR
Dynamic range describes a brightness span. HDR, or High Dynamic Range, is a way to encode, deliver, and display video intended to represent a wider brightness range than an SDR workflow. It depends on a compatible signal path and playback device; choosing an HDR mode cannot add sensor information that was clipped or lost in noise during capture.
HDR workflows commonly use PQ or HLG transfer functions. Rec. 2020 (also called BT.2020) identifies color primaries and gamut in the cited delivery workflow; it is not another term for dynamic range. YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for Rec. 2020 with PQ or HLG for HDR grading. It also says viewers on non-HDR devices see an SDR version, so an HDR upload is not necessarily viewed as HDR by every audience member.

HDR does not always appear brighter than SDR in every scene or on every device. Sony cautions that HDR footage in a low-range scene can look darker than SDR on a particular device. The intended appearance depends on the content, mastering, playback, and display.
What shooting in Log does—and does not do
Log is a way to encode a broad range of captured tonal values in a flatter-looking image for later processing. The flatter appearance is not a sign that the footage is already an HDR deliverable. Log recording does not give a sensor more dynamic range, nor does it guarantee an HDR result.

ARRI describes Log C as scene-based encoding and notes that a transform or tone mapping is needed to display it correctly on SDR, HDR, or projection targets. For an SDR finish, the image must be mapped into the narrower target range. Adobe documents tone mapping from HLG or PQ HDR into Rec. 709, an SDR color space. This conversion can compress or remap the available range; it is part of making the image look intentional on the target, not a way to restore missing detail.

How to judge a camera’s stop-count claim
Manufacturer figures are useful examples, but they are not a neutral cross-camera ranking. ARRI’s current HDR FAQ gives different context for its own claims: 17 stops for ALEXA 35/ALEXA 35 Xtreme, measured with the Xyla chart and ARRI Analysis method, and 14+ stops for ALEV3 sensor cameras, measured with the ARRI Dynamic Range Test Chart. The FAQ connects the ALEV3 generation with its introduction in 2010; the figure remains ARRI’s technical claim, not an independent comparative test.
Blackmagic Design lists 13 stops for its Pocket Cinema Camera product family. That is also a manufacturer-published specification, not a comparable independent test. Do not rank camera models by these numbers alone: test chart, analysis method, noise threshold, camera settings, recording mode, and whether a figure means total range or latitude around middle gray can all affect what the number means.
- Check the exact camera model and recording mode, not just the sensor family.
- Look for the manufacturer’s measurement method and what counts as usable shadow detail.
- Confirm whether the figure is total measured range or exposure latitude around a reference exposure.
- Treat claims from different manufacturers as non-equivalent unless the test method and conditions match.
Use a waveform to see signal levels
A waveform is a practical scope for seeing where brightness levels sit in the video signal and where those levels occur across the picture. Blackmagic Design describes its waveform display as showing the luma (brightness) levels of the video signal. It can help reveal highlights approaching the top of the signal or shadows crowded near the bottom.

A waveform does not decide the right exposure for the scene, and it cannot guarantee that a region contains useful detail. Pair it with image inspection and creative judgment; the goal is not to force every image into a particular level but to know what the signal is doing.
Choosing an SDR or HDR target
When finishing for SDR
Use a suitable display transform or tone mapping so footage—especially Log or HDR-originated footage—fits the SDR target. Adobe’s documented HDR-to-Rec. 709 tone mapping is one example of this conversion. Check highlights and shadows after the transform, because compression into a narrower range can change contrast and the appearance of detail.
When finishing for HDR
Use a compatible HDR workflow and verify the transfer function, color space, mastering, and playback path. YouTube’s guidance specifies Rec. 2020 with PQ or HLG for HDR grading, and playback on non-HDR devices falls back to SDR. Review the image on an appropriate display when possible; a signal labelled HDR alone does not ensure that every viewer sees the same result.
Common misunderstandings
- “More camera stops mean the image will look better automatically.” More capture latitude can help preserve detail for grading, but exposure, noise, lighting, and the target display still matter.
- “Log is HDR.” Log is an encoding approach; HDR is a delivery and display path. Log needs an appropriate transform for viewing.
- “Rec. 2020 is dynamic range.” Rec. 2020 describes color primaries/gamut in the cited workflow; PQ and HLG are transfer functions used for HDR.
- “HDR always looks brighter.” Perceived brightness depends on the scene and playback device; Sony notes a low-range scene can appear darker in HDR than SDR on a particular device.
- “A waveform tells me whether the image is artistically right.” It shows signal levels; it does not replace visual judgment or guarantee retained detail.
For creators who also run a YouTube channel
Dynamic range is about image capture and presentation; it does not determine whether a channel’s stream stays online. If you publish pre-recorded video as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service from Yorker Media: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free without a card (one free day per account); billing options are a day, week, month, six months, or a year, and you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
