You can keep a sleep-sounds feed live on YouTube from an Indian Linux VPS by looping a rights-cleared audio-and-video source through an encoder such as FFmpeg and sending it to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The VPS can keep the encoder running when your own computer is off, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted public broadcast: YouTube ingest, the server, the network route and your source files all need to work. Set up the channel and test the complete feed before treating it as a 24/7 service.
How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works
Your audio and visual assets are stored on, or read by, the VPS. FFmpeg packages that source into a live feed and sends it to the ingest address and stream key provided by YouTube Studio. YouTube then distributes the broadcast to viewers. The encoder running is not proof that the viewer-facing stream is healthy: YouTube’s developer documentation distinguishes the incoming liveStream resource from the public liveBroadcast and exposes stream health information.
An Indian VPS is the server location, not a guarantee about the quality of its route to YouTube ingest or availability to viewers worldwide. The platform guidance does not establish a particular Indian host, plan, minimum CPU, transfer allowance or reliability figure. Choose a plan only after checking those details with the provider and testing your actual feed.
Check channel eligibility before renting a server
YouTube’s current live-stream setup guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the account before spending time configuring FFmpeg.

Choose the source and VPS around the stream
Prepare a complete audiovisual loop
For the simplest FFmpeg setup, prepare a single video file containing both the sleep audio and its visual loop. Check that the file plays from start to finish, that the transition back to its beginning is acceptable, and that it does not contain a silent gap, abrupt loudness change or unwanted visual. Keep the original source files separately so you can repair or replace the stream input.
If you plan to encode or transcode on the VPS rather than pass through an already compatible file, CPU needs will depend on the resolution, frame rate, codec and encoding mode. Transcoding is more CPU-intensive than stream-copying. Do not treat a generic VPS size as a verified minimum.

Compare hosting on the costs that affect a continuous feed
- Outbound transfer: confirm the plan’s sustained upload capacity and monthly data-transfer or egress allowance. A continuously running feed sends data for as long as it is live.
- CPU policy: check the provider’s CPU allocation and restrictions, especially if FFmpeg will encode rather than copy compatible streams.
- Location and route: check the server’s actual location and test its route to YouTube ingest; an India location alone does not establish route quality.
- Operations: compare stated uptime and support terms, storage, backups, restart facilities and monitoring. These are provider terms to verify, not guarantees that YouTube will remain live.
No specific Indian VPS price or provider recommendation is established here. Compare current plans and terms directly with the host before committing.
Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Create or select the live broadcast and use the encoder setup details YouTube provides. The stream key is the credential that lets an encoder send the feed; treat it like a password.
- Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its developer documentation describes it as RTMP tunneled through an SSL connection.
- Keep the ingest address and key private. Store them in a protected server configuration accessible only to the account running FFmpeg. Do not put the key in a public script, screenshot, chat or repository. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live-stream controls.
- Review the broadcast before starting the encoder. Check its title, audience settings and visibility, then confirm that the displayed encoder details match the values configured on the VPS.
Set FFmpeg’s output to match the source and YouTube guidance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It also recommends testing upload speed, testing representative audio and motion before launch, and monitoring stream health and messages. Use a bitrate that suits your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec and that the VPS can sustain; the guidance does not justify copying one bitrate to every setup.

Pass through a compatible prepared file
If the source already uses a format and stream structure suitable for YouTube ingest, stream-copying avoids re-encoding. The following command loops a single audiovisual file and sends it to the RTMPS address and key copied from YouTube’s encoder setup. Set the two environment variables from your own Studio details; do not paste the key into a shared shell history or public script.
export RTMPS_URL='paste-the-RTMPS-ingest-address-from-YouTube-Studio'
export STREAM_KEY='paste-the-private-stream-key-from-YouTube-Studio'
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/sleep/channel.mp4 -c copy -f flv "${RTMPS_URL%/}/${STREAM_KEY}"
This is a stream-copy example, not a universal compatibility guarantee. If the source’s codecs, bitrate mode, keyframe spacing or container do not work with the ingest, prepare a compatible file or configure a deliberate transcode and test it. Do not assume that adding an encoder flag fixes an unsuitable source without checking the resulting stream.

When re-encoding is necessary
Configure the selected video codec, audio codec, constant bitrate and keyframe interval explicitly in your FFmpeg command, then confirm the output settings and test the real feed. Set the bitrate for the particular resolution, frame rate and codec using YouTube’s current encoder guidance and a measured stable uplink. The material available here does not establish a single bitrate or complete transcode command that is correct for every source; inventing one could overload a VPS or produce an unsuitable stream.
Test the whole broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Start with a representative section of the intended source, including its loudest and quietest audio and the motion or visual changes in the loop.
- Run an upload-speed test from the VPS and compare the stable result with the configured outgoing feed, rather than relying on a provider’s advertised network speed.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. Confirm that the viewer-facing broadcast appears and that both audio and video play as intended.
- Let the test run long enough to catch source transitions, file-read errors and changes in stream health. Test the recovery path by restarting the encoder deliberately before relying on it in production.
- Set up process supervision or a restart policy, retain logs and arrange an alert for loss of feed. These safeguards can help recover from an encoder failure; they do not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast.
Keep the source file and, where practical, a separate local recording or backup. YouTube recommends monitoring during the stream; a healthy encoder process alone cannot confirm that the public broadcast remains healthy.

Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining an FFmpeg process and VPS is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping an uploaded-video YouTube stream running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
Prevent copyright and policy interruptions
Clear both the sound and the visuals
Use only audio and visuals for which you have the rights needed for a worldwide live broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation, including music licensing rights, and must meet applicable laws and licensing requirements. Check rights for sound recordings and compositions where relevant, as well as the visual loop.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A detected match can cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; unresolved content can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. For licensed third-party material, follow YouTube’s direction to ask the rights owner to allowlist the channel. YouTube Help’s guidance is direct: “If your live stream stops, check your YouTube Studio dashboard for strikes.”
Do not assume a loop will qualify for monetization
YouTube monetization policies apply to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 policy update clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under the renamed “inauthentic content” policy, which emphasizes original, authentic work and meaningful variation or viewer value. A continuous loop is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube Partner Program eligibility also depends on policy compliance, an eligible country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, applicable feature thresholds and review. Do not promise approval or revenue; YouTube excludes some live streams from qualified public watch hours, including streams that are unlisted, deleted or not converted to VOD.

YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream shorter than 12 hours. “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all,” according to YouTube Help’s archive guidance. A 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as its own durable recording. Keep the original assets and, if you need an archive, make a separate recording or plan shorter broadcasts after checking the current YouTube workflow. YouTube recommends a local archive backup; storage needs depend on the recording bitrate, duration and retention period.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming feed | Wrong ingest address or key, encoder not running, or network connection failure. | Compare the configured values with the current encoder details in YouTube Studio, check FFmpeg output and VPS connectivity, and keep the key private. |
| Encoder runs but broadcast is unhealthy | The incoming feed may have a format or bitrate problem, or a network route may be unstable. | Read Live Control Room health messages, verify actual output settings against YouTube’s encoder guidance, and test the VPS upload path under the real feed. |
| Audio or video is missing, silent or unexpectedly cut | The source file may be incomplete, incompatible, or not contain the expected tracks throughout. | Play the source from beginning to end, check its audio and video tracks, then test the same file and FFmpeg settings before relaunching. |
| The stream stops after a copyright match | YouTube detected third-party material or the channel was not allowlisted by the rights owner. | Check YouTube Studio for warnings or strikes, remove or replace material you cannot clear, and ask the rights owner to allowlist the channel when applicable. |
| The VPS restarts but the stream does not return | The encoder process may not be supervised, its source may be unavailable, or stored credentials/configuration may be incorrect. | Check service logs and file paths, verify protected configuration, enable process supervision and test a full restart-and-recovery cycle. |
| A long broadcast has no complete YouTube archive | Streams exceeding YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance may not be captured. | Use a separate recording or backup plan instead of relying on the continuous broadcast as the archive. |
