You can run a continuous YouTube channel from a Mac mini by using OBS Studio to send a looping program feed to YouTube Live. Create a stream in YouTube Studio, add its server URL and stream key to OBS, keep the Mac awake, and monitor the connection. This is a do-it-yourself setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: power, internet, the Mac, OBS and YouTube all remain part of the chain.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- A Mac mini running OBS Studio, plus the prerecorded video or other media you intend to play. The exact Mac mini model and workload capability are not established here; confirm current OBS requirements and test your actual resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene before relying on it.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the bitrate you choose. There is no one upload-speed figure established for every video and setup.
- A stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

Enable livestreaming and create the YouTube event
In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming controls and create or schedule a stream. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Build and test the OBS scene
In OBS, create a scene for the program. Add the prerecorded video as a media source and enable looping if you want it to repeat; add titles or branding only if needed. Confirm the video actually loops, audio is audible without clipping, and the scene looks right at the intended output size. These are workflow steps, not a guarantee that every media file or Mac mini can sustain a particular format.

Connect OBS to YouTube
In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if it is available as a service and connect the channel, or enter the server URL and stream key copied from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private and do not include it in screenshots, recordings or public documentation.

Set the output to match the source and your connection
Choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate for the video and Mac mini, then use an encoder and bitrate the system and upload connection can sustain. No universal bitrate or Mac mini performance figure is established for this particular channel. Test the complete stream before launch; if OBS reports growing dropped frames, lower the bitrate or resolve the network issue rather than assuming the stream is healthy.

Start the encoder and confirm the broadcast
For an immediate-start workflow, start streaming from OBS and check YouTube’s live preview and stream health. For a scheduled event, YouTube’s flow is to start the encoder, confirm the preview in Live Control Room, and then select Go live. Confirm that both picture and sound reach the YouTube preview before leaving the setup unattended.

Prevent the Mac mini from sleeping
On a desktop Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy and, if the option is available, enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. Menu labels and availability can vary by Mac model and macOS version. Apple notes that preventing sleep may increase power consumption. See Apple’s sleep and wake settings guide.

Check the stream during operation
Monitor OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame counter, and check YouTube’s preview and stream health periodically. OBS explains that a rising dropped-frame count with a yellow or red connection indicator can mean the connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. A wired connection can help reduce one source of network variability, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Refer to the OBS Help Portal for dropped-frame diagnostics.

Choose the audience setting accurately
YouTube requires creators to designate whether content is made for kids. Set this based on the actual intended audience and content, not merely because the stream is family-friendly. YouTube identifies factors including subject matter, child actors, characters or toys, language, activities, songs, stories and advertising, and says the creator is responsible for making the designation accurately. The right answer depends on the channel’s content and audience; this guide cannot determine the legal status of an individual channel. Review YouTube’s guidance on determining whether content is made for kids.
Plan for archives, outages and restarts
Do not rely on one 24-hour replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its published guidance does not establish that a broadcast longer than that will be archived as one replay. If you need replays, plan and test a segmenting workflow, such as ending and starting separate broadcasts, and verify the resulting availability in YouTube Studio. Consider whether you also need a local recording.

Know what can interrupt a local setup
A Mac-based stream depends on the Mac staying powered and awake, OBS continuing to run, the internet connection remaining usable, and the stream configuration working. A power or network interruption can stop the feed; this setup description does not establish automatic restart or recovery. Decide who will check alerts and restart the encoder, and test recovery procedures before making the channel unattended.
