You can use Google Drive videos as the source for a 24/7 kids’ animation channel, but Drive should not be treated as the audience-facing streaming service. Download or stage videos you have permission to use, feed them through a continuously running playlist and encoder, then connect that feed to a YouTube Live broadcast. YouTube distinguishes the incoming stream from the broadcast viewers watch; its documentation describes keeping one feed running around the clock.
How the setup fits together
Think of the system as three separate jobs:
- Media storage: Google Drive holds the video files and provides an authorized way to download them.
- Playout and encoding: a player selects and repeats the staged files, while an encoder sends continuous audio and video to YouTube.
- YouTube Live: a stream carries the feed; a broadcast is the viewer-facing live event associated with that feed.
Drive can be the source or staging point for files. Google’s Drive API terms do not allow using Drive as a replacement for a large-scale content delivery network (CDN). That restriction matters when planning a channel for an audience: downloading files from Drive for playout is different from relying on Drive to deliver every viewer’s playback.
Prepare the videos and access
Confirm permission to use and download each video
Possessing a Drive link does not establish that you have permission to rebroadcast a video. Confirm the rights to use the animation in a public livestream and verify that the file owner permits downloading. For Drive API downloads, Google documents retrieving a binary file with files.get and alt=media; the API caller needs an OAuth scope that permits reading file content and should check that capabilities.canDownload is true.
Stage the files outside audience delivery
Download the authorized videos through an approved browser workflow or the Drive API, then choose a permitted local or cloud location for playout. Do not build an audience delivery system around repeatedly serving the video files from Drive. Google’s Drive API quota documentation describes a 1 TB per-project daily egress threshold under its quota model effective May 1, 2026. It is an API quota threshold, not a promise of sustained throughput, CDN capacity, or permission to redistribute content. Google also says projects using the API from November 2025 through April 2026 keep the earlier quota model, so check the limit that applies to your project. Quota excess can produce 403 or 429 errors.

Organize a continuous playlist
Choose a playout process that can play staged files in sequence and return to the beginning of the playlist without an operator restarting it. The cited Google documentation does not certify a particular Drive-to-YouTube looping application or a specific playlist workflow. Before relying on any player or encoder, verify its current version, looping behavior, unattended restart behavior, and handling of audio and video transitions.
Build and validate the YouTube Live feed
- Check that the channel can livestream. Confirm the channel is enabled and authorized for live streaming in YouTube’s current creator controls before building an unattended schedule.
- Create or select a YouTube stream. The stream is the incoming audio/video feed. YouTube documents persistent 24/7 feeds and allows a stream to be associated with separate broadcasts.
- Create a broadcast and associate it with the stream. The broadcast is the distinct event viewers watch. Bind it to the stream rather than treating the two YouTube resources as interchangeable.
- Connect the encoder using a supported ingest route. YouTube documents RTMP stream resources; HLS ingestion has separate format and transport requirements. Select a route supported by the encoder and the YouTube setup you are using.
- Set the encoder’s output using current YouTube guidance. The available documentation here does not establish a particular encoder, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, or playlist player. Do not copy an arbitrary preset and assume it is correct: confirm the chosen encoder’s current controls and match them to the ingest requirements shown for your stream.
- Run a private end-to-end test. Check that the playlist loops, audio remains continuous, transitions behave as expected, YouTube reports a healthy incoming feed, and the system resumes after you deliberately test an interruption. Test the actual hardware or cloud environment you intend to use; a successful short test does not prove unattended recovery over a long run.
- Start the public broadcast and monitor it. Have a plan for who checks the feed and what to do if the player, encoder, connection, or YouTube ingest stops. The exact restart procedure depends on the unverified player and encoder you select.
Set the audience accurately for children’s content
Do not assume YouTube classifies a livestream as made for kids simply because it contains animation. Use YouTube’s audience controls to declare the broadcast accurately; the Live Streaming API includes selfDeclaredMadeForKids for a broadcast, while madeForKids is a read-only status property.

YouTube lists feature restrictions for livestreams set as made for kids. These include live chat and live chat donations, comments, personalized advertising, cards and end screens, notifications, Super Chat and Super Stickers, miniplayer playback, and saving the stream to a playlist. Channel-level made-for-kids settings can remove channel features as well. Plan the viewer experience around the restrictions that apply. This describes YouTube product behavior, not the full set of legal obligations that may apply to a channel.
Choose who runs playout and recovery
The key decision is not just where the files sit; it is who is responsible for keeping the playlist, encoder, and YouTube connection running. Compare options on unattended playback and restart behavior, permitted file staging, ingest support and control, operating cost, and who monitors interruptions.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
- Drive download fails with a permission error: confirm the account has content-read authorization and that the file owner has allowed downloading; check
capabilities.canDownloadwhen using the API. - Drive API requests return 403 or 429: check the project’s applicable quota and egress threshold, then adjust the download workflow rather than treating Drive as a high-volume viewer delivery layer.
- YouTube has no incoming picture or sound: check that the encoder is using the selected stream’s current ingest details and a supported protocol, then verify its output and audio/video feed locally. Do not assume RTMP and HLS settings are interchangeable.
- The live event ends while the feed should continue: check which broadcast state was changed and whether the stream itself remains active. YouTube treats the broadcast and stream as separate resources.
- The playlist stops or fails to restart: investigate the chosen player’s loop and recovery controls. These behaviors depend on the specific software and need to be tested; Drive and YouTube documentation do not certify a particular unattended playlist stack.
- Expected audience features are missing: check the broadcast’s made-for-kids designation and applicable channel-level audience setting against YouTube’s restricted-feature list.
Copyright and reused-content checks
Only stream animation you are authorized to broadcast. A video being available in Drive, or viewable through a shared link, is not proof of redistribution rights. Keep records of permissions and licenses for the videos in the playlist, and check that those rights cover a continuous public livestream. YouTube’s audience setting is a separate decision from copyright permission. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.
