You can loop a prepared fireplace video into a YouTube live stream with FFmpeg by putting -stream_loop -1 before the input file’s -i option, then sending the output to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. That loop keeps the input repeating; it does not restart a crashed encoder or protect against a power, network, or YouTube interruption. For a genuinely unattended broadcast, plan for process supervision and monitoring as well.
What you need before you start
- A fireplace video and audio that you own or are licensed to use in a YouTube live stream.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; the person streaming must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A computer with FFmpeg installed, a stable upload connection, and enough processing capacity if you plan to re-encode the video.
- The server URL and stream key for an encoder stream created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If you are not using a prepared file and instead intend to stream a camera, this file-loop workflow is not the right setup.
Check the footage and rights first
Use footage and audio you created yourself or have explicit permission to broadcast live on YouTube. A license to download or use a track does not necessarily mean its owner has authorized your channel for live use. Keep a copy of the license and check whether the rights holder must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, warn you, interrupt or terminate the broadcast; copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can also lead to termination. Licensed material can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. Review YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming content before going live.

Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the URL and key together in your FFmpeg output configuration; do not paste the key into a public post, script repository, or shared log.
- Choose the intended audience and visibility settings in Studio. You can test the stream privately or unlisted before making it public.
YouTube may take up to 24 hours to enable live streaming the first time you activate it. If the encoder option is unavailable, check channel eligibility and restrictions rather than assuming FFmpeg is the problem. See YouTube’s encoder-stream setup guidance.
Configure FFmpeg to loop the file
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option repeats an input indefinitely. It is an input option, so put it before the relevant -i. FFmpeg documents that “Loop 0 means no loop, loop -1 means infinite loop.” The -re input option is useful when reading a file at its native playback rate instead of processing it as fast as possible.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "fireplace.mp4" -f flv "[YouTube ingest URL]/[STREAM_KEY]"
This is a command shape, not a universal copy-and-run command: the input codecs, FFmpeg build, shell, output options, and YouTube ingest protocol vary. Substitute the server URL and key from Studio, and configure output codecs and parameters that are compatible with the selected ingest workflow. Do not expose a real key in a saved example or screenshot.
Some source files may already use suitable codecs; others may need re-encoding. If you re-encode, account for the encoder’s CPU or GPU load and verify the resulting video and audio settings. FFmpeg options can apply to the next input or output, so put each option in the appropriate position and consult the documentation for your installed build at FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.

Choose settings YouTube can ingest reliably
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS. Its listed video codecs include H.264, H.265, and AV1, and its listed audio codecs include AAC and MP3; the available combinations depend on the ingest protocol and encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts stream data into and through Google’s servers. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Resolution and bitrate: Choose a resolution that suits your source and a bitrate your sustained upload speed can support. Leave capacity for normal network variation and other household or office traffic; a short peak-speed test is not proof of stable all-day upload.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes it, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends for encoder streaming.
- Video and audio codecs: Confirm that the codec combination is supported by both the selected YouTube ingest workflow and your FFmpeg build. Check whether the file has an audio track and whether it is the track you intend to broadcast.
- RTMPS: Prefer the RTMPS server URL when the selected workflow and FFmpeg build support it.
There is no single bitrate that is reliable for every connection or source. If the footage is static, it may still contain motion in flames, smoke, or reflections; test with representative movement and the actual audio, not a still frame alone.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start FFmpeg and check that it connects to the server URL without reporting an output or codec error.
- Open the stream preview in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Confirm that the video appears, the intended audio is present, and the image is not stretched, cropped, or unexpectedly degraded.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health feedback while the encoder sends representative footage. Address warnings before relying on the stream for a long run.
- Check the intended visibility and audience settings in Studio, then start or schedule the public broadcast when ready.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one continuous 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full or remain available as a single recording. Treat the live broadcast and any recording you need as separate concerns.

The loop flag only repeats the file while FFmpeg is running. It does not supervise the process, restart it after a crash, restart the computer after a reboot, restore a failed internet connection, or guarantee that YouTube accepts a reconnect. YouTube and FFmpeg’s cited documentation do not provide a verified, one-size-fits-all service configuration for every operating system and FFmpeg build.

For an unattended setup, configure an operating-system service manager or equivalent supervisor for your specific system, with a deliberate restart policy, logs, and alerts. Verify that behavior on the chosen OS and installed version, including what happens after a process failure and a machine reboot. Monitor the YouTube Live Control Room as well: a running local process alone does not prove that the channel is receiving a healthy stream.
Troubleshooting common failures
- Live encoder access is missing: Check channel verification, live-stream restrictions within the prior 90 days, and whether first-time activation is still pending. YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- FFmpeg cannot connect: Recheck the server URL and stream key copied from the correct Studio stream, confirm network access, and make sure the chosen RTMP or RTMPS URL matches the output configuration.
- The stream starts but YouTube reports poor health: Reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level the connection can sustain, confirm CBR and the keyframe interval, and check for competing upload traffic.
- Video appears but audio is absent or wrong: Inspect the source file’s audio tracks and the output mapping/codec configuration. Test the actual file in the preview before leaving the stream running.
- The stream stops after FFmpeg exits: A loop does not restart a process. Check logs and configure a verified supervisor for your operating system; confirm the restart behavior rather than assuming it.
- Video is interrupted despite having a license: Contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting for your channel and verify that the license covers live streaming on YouTube.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer or connection to be responsible for keeping the broadcast alive, StreamNeo runs a prepared video as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. The setup is three steps: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
