To send 4K at 60 fps to YouTube Live from Ubuntu 24.04, use FFmpeg to read the video in real time and publish it over RTMPS. For H.264, YouTube recommends a 50 Mbps ingest bitrate; use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. First inspect the source: stream-copy it only if its format already suits the target, otherwise transcode it with an encoder available in your FFmpeg build. These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that your computer, source file, or internet connection can sustain 4K60.
What you need before streaming
- Ubuntu 24.04 with FFmpeg installed. FFmpeg options and available encoders vary by build; verify the installed version and encoder list before choosing a command.
- A video file and a stable upload connection. For H.264 4K60, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps of video ingest bitrate. Leave additional upload capacity for audio and connection overhead, and test the connection under realistic conditions.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus its current ingest endpoint and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS where supported. Treat the stream key like a password: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or shell history.
Check the source file and your FFmpeg build
Inspect the video
Use ffprobe to see whether the source is already 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps, and note its video codec, pixel format, bitrate, audio streams, and frame rate:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.mp4
A file’s label or container does not establish that it is suitable for 4K60 ingest. Check the actual streams. If the video already has the target resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe cadence, stream copy may work. Copying does not fix a mismatch or convert the file.

Check FFmpeg and available encoders
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
Choose an encoder that appears in your build and supports the source and output you need. Ubuntu 24.04’s FFmpeg documentation lists VAAPI and QSV hardware acceleration, but their availability and effect depend on the installed build, hardware, drivers, and selected encoder. Do not assume a hardware encoder is present or that a particular machine can sustain 4K60. The examples below use the software H.264 encoder libx264; that encoder must also be available in your build.
Choose the codec and ingest settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance accessed in 2026 gives these 4K/2160p 60 fps values:

| Codec | Recommended ingest bitrate | Minimum ingest bitrate | Guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframes recommended, no more than four seconds apart |
| H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframes recommended, no more than four seconds apart |
| AV1 | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframes recommended, no more than four seconds apart |
The minimum figures are not recommended targets for a reliable broadcast. Select a codec your FFmpeg build and ingest workflow support, and make sure your upload connection has dependable headroom above the chosen video bitrate. YouTube lists all three codecs for RTMP/RTMPS ingest up to 60 fps; it recommends H.265 for HDR and does not support AV1 for HDR. For SDR, its guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit; for HDR, 10-bit.
At 60 fps, a two-second GOP is 120 frames. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; the FFmpeg example below sets a 120-frame GOP. Match the frame count to the actual output frame rate if you change it.

Get the YouTube ingest endpoint and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the scheduled or current stream.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values from your account rather than the illustrative host and key in the commands below.
- Keep the key private. Avoid putting it in a script that others can read or in command history that may be retained or shared. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room before streaming again.
Send a compatible file without re-encoding
If inspection confirms the file already meets your desired ingest settings, stream copy avoids another encode. Replace the endpoint and key with your own RTMPS values:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/live2/STREAM_KEY'
-re reads the media file at its normal playback rate, while -c copy passes the existing audio and video streams through without re-encoding. The FLV output is used for RTMP-family ingest. This documented command pattern is not a guarantee that every input file or endpoint will work unchanged. If the source codec, cadence, bitrate, or stream layout is unsuitable, use a transcode instead.

Transcode to H.264 4K60 when needed
This illustrative software-encoding command scales the video to 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps, sets a 50 Mbps H.264 target, and uses a 120-frame keyframe interval. Use it only after checking the input, available encoder, audio layout, and current YouTube guidance:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
-vf 'scale=3840:2160,fps=60'
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 50M -maxrate 50M -bufsize 100M
-g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/live2/STREAM_KEY'
-vf 'scale=3840:2160,fps=60'sets the output dimensions and frame rate; it does not make low-resolution material contain true 4K detail.-c:v libx264selects H.264 encoding. If your build lackslibx264, this command will fail; choose an encoder you have verified rather than assuming a hardware-specific substitute.-b:v 50M -maxrate 50Msets the target and maximum video rate to YouTube’s H.264 4K60 recommendation.-bufsize 100Msets the rate-control buffer in this example; it is not an additional bandwidth requirement.-g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0requests a fixed 120-frame keyframe cadence for this 60 fps output: two seconds. Confirm the chosen encoder honors the options.-pix_fmt yuv420pand the AAC audio options are illustrative SDR-oriented choices, not universal fixes. Check the source’s pixel format, HDR/SDR requirements, audio streams, and YouTube’s current guidance; adjust pixel format, profile, scaling, and audio mapping as needed.-repaces playback of the input file in real time.-f flvselects the output container used for the RTMP-family endpoint.
For H.265/HEVC or AV1, use an encoder that is actually present and supported in your FFmpeg build, and set the bitrate according to YouTube’s codec-specific guidance. The H.264 command above is not a universal command for those codecs. FFmpeg options are version- and build-sensitive.

Test, go live, and monitor stream health
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before the intended broadcast. Use a representative passage with motion and audio similar to the actual stream.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the incoming resolution, frame rate, and stream health. Read any encoder or connection warnings rather than assuming that a successful FFmpeg connection means the desired quality is arriving.
- During the broadcast, keep monitoring stream health and messages in Live Control Room. YouTube advises testing before going live and checking stream health during the event.
YouTube notes that 4K streams are optimized for normal latency rather than receiving its low-latency improvement option. If your setup cannot maintain the target reliably, investigate the encoder load, source properties, and upload stability before lowering quality or changing codecs.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder | The installed build does not include the encoder named in the command. | Run ffmpeg -encoders; choose an available compatible encoder or install a build that provides the intended one. |
| Connection fails or YouTube rejects the stream | Wrong or stale endpoint/key, unsupported output, or an ingest connection problem. | Copy the current RTMPS endpoint and key from Live Control Room, check the key remains private, and verify the FLV/RTMP-family output and connection. |
| Stream arrives below 4K or 60 fps | The source or output filter may not match the target, or the encoder may not be keeping up. | Inspect the input with ffprobe, check the command’s scale and frame-rate filter, then verify the incoming properties in Live Control Room. |
| Buffering, dropped frames, or poor stream health | Upload capacity may be inadequate or unstable; encoding may also exceed the machine’s capacity. | Test upload stability with a representative stream, compare capacity with the codec’s target bitrate plus overhead, and check encoder load. YouTube’s minimum bitrate is not a recommended target. |
| Audio is missing, duplicated, or wrong | The input may have multiple or unusual audio streams, and the illustrative command does not explicitly map them. | Inspect audio streams with ffprobe and add explicit FFmpeg audio mapping or adjust encoding to match the file. |
| Color or HDR output is wrong | The sample command’s SDR pixel format and conversion settings may not match the source or HDR workflow. | Identify whether the source is SDR or HDR and set a compatible pixel format and encoding workflow using YouTube’s current guidance; do not treat yuv420p as an HDR setting. |
