To stream a local 4K/60 video file to YouTube Live from Ubuntu, use FFmpeg to pace the file in real time, encode it to a YouTube-compatible stream, and send it to the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. For H.264, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps at 4K/60; with its recommended 20% upload headroom, plan for at least 60 Mbps of sustained available upload for the video, plus any audio and other outgoing traffic. Those are YouTube configuration recommendations—not a guarantee that a particular computer, build of FFmpeg, or Indian ISP can maintain the stream.
Before you start: confirm channel access and source media
Check YouTube Live eligibility
Before troubleshooting an encoder, confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; its eligibility guidance also states a minimum age of 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
Inspect the file and FFmpeg build
There is no single command guaranteed across Ubuntu releases, FFmpeg packages, input formats, and hardware. Check that the file actually contains 3840×2160 video at 60 fps and an audio stream, and confirm the installed FFmpeg supports libx264 and RTMPS/TLS. FFprobe can show the file’s stream properties:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
Review the output for the video resolution, frame rate, codec, and audio stream. If the media differs from the intended output, you may need explicit stream mapping, scaling, frame-rate conversion, pixel-format conversion, or audio handling. A file’s label or filename alone does not confirm its actual properties.

Choose a 4K/60 encoding target
YouTube publishes different 4K/2160p at 60 fps bitrate recommendations by codec. These figures are platform guidance, not a promise of quality or successful real-time encoding on a particular machine. Verify the current table before streaming: YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| Video codec | YouTube-listed minimum at 4K/60 | YouTube-recommended bitrate at 4K/60 | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps | A familiar FFmpeg option; confirm your CPU or hardware encoder can sustain real-time 4K/60. |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | Use only if your installed FFmpeg build and machine support the chosen encoder and can run it at the required pace. |
The bitrate table does not specify which encoder is available in your Ubuntu package or how fast your computer can encode. Test the actual selected codec and settings with representative footage before relying on them for a scheduled broadcast.

Match frame rate, keyframes, and audio
- YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- The recommended keyframe interval is two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. At 60 fps, two seconds is 120 frames.
- YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, its recommendation is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
Plan upload capacity, not download speed
Measure sustained outbound upload under conditions similar to the live session; a download result does not answer this question. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total outgoing bitrate and warns that a network disruption can break a stream. For H.264 configured at the recommended 50 Mbps video bitrate, adding 20% gives 60 Mbps of available upload for the video alone; allow additional capacity for audio and any other outgoing traffic. This 60 Mbps figure is arithmetic from YouTube’s recommendation and headroom guidance, not a separate YouTube-published benchmark. Your actual result in India depends on your location, ISP, congestion, and routing; no nationwide performance figure establishes what your connection will sustain. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream.
- Open the stream’s Stream settings and copy its RTMPS URL and associated stream key. YouTube’s RTMPS help page explains where to find them and how to reveal the URL: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Keep the stream key secret. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, shell history, or support post. If sharing logs, remove the key and any destination string that contains it.
RTMPS is RTMP sent over TLS/SSL. Use the URL supplied for this particular stream rather than constructing or reusing an address from memory. If an otherwise-correct RTMPS address produces an SSL error, YouTube says to try port 443.

Run FFmpeg as a real-time file stream
FFmpeg’s -re option reads an input at its native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1; this is useful when a file should feed a live stream at real-time pace. -stream_loop -1 loops an input indefinitely. Both are input options, so place them before the relevant -i. FFmpeg documents these options in its command-line documentation and an RTMP example in its formats documentation.
The following is an illustrative H.264/AAC starting template, not verified universal working code. Replace the file path and both RTMPS placeholders with values for your setup. Do not save a real stream key in a public script or paste it into a public support request.

The template may need changes for a particular file, FFmpeg package, or machine. If FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder, inspect the installed build and choose an encoder it includes; hardware acceleration and real-time performance depend on the build and hardware. Do not assume that every Ubuntu installation includes an AV1 or HEVC encoder or can encode 4K/60 fast enough.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preflight and monitor the broadcast
- Confirm channel eligibility, file properties, encoder availability, and the codec-specific bitrate before launch.
- Measure actual upload capacity from the Ubuntu host and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom over total outgoing bitrate.
- Where suitable, begin with a private or unlisted test. In Live Control Room, inspect the preview and stream health; use footage with representative motion and check that audio is present and synchronized.
- Monitor the connection and encoder while streaming. A brief connection disruption can interrupt delivery, and the stream’s health indicators help distinguish an incoming-feed problem from a viewer-side playback issue.
For 4K/2160, YouTube says: “For 4K / 2160, the option to improve for low latency is not available. All streams will be optimized for quality and set to normal latency.” Plan for normal latency rather than expecting the low-latency setting to be available.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Destination URL or stream key is wrong, or the key belongs to another stream. | Copy the RTMPS URL and key again from that stream’s Live Control Room settings. Keep the key private. |
| SSL/TLS connection error | The URL may be incorrect, or the connection may be blocked or fail on its current port. | Confirm the copied URL uses RTMPS. For an otherwise-correct URL that causes an SSL error, try port 443 as YouTube advises. |
| FFmpeg says an encoder is unavailable | The installed build may not include libx264 or the requested codec encoder. |
Check the encoders supported by that build and adapt the command to an available option; do not assume package capabilities from the Ubuntu release alone. |
| Video stutters, drops, or stream health degrades | Available sustained upload may be below the total outgoing bitrate, or the connection may be disrupted. | Check outbound rather than download speed, reduce the configured bitrate if needed, preserve headroom, and retest under realistic network conditions. |
| Output is not 4K/60 or does not look as expected | The source properties, frame conversion, pixel format, or encoder settings may not match the intended output. | Inspect with ffprobe, then adapt mapping and conversion options to the actual media and verify the preview before the public event. |
| Audio is missing or unsuitable | The input may not have an audio stream, or the requested audio handling may not fit its format. | Check the input streams and revise audio mapping or encoding for the file; confirm sound in the test preview. |
| Live streaming is unavailable for the channel | Verification or an account restriction may prevent the broadcast. | Check YouTube’s eligibility requirements and resolve channel access issues before changing FFmpeg settings. |
A wired Ethernet connection can be worth considering if the host currently relies on Wi-Fi, but it does not guarantee adequate upload capacity or uninterrupted service. Test the actual connection either way.
