YouTube Live’s built-in vertical layout defaults to a center crop of a horizontal stream. You can change that layout in Live Control Room, but YouTube’s documented options do not include a specific “add black bars” setting. If you want portrait footage centered inside a landscape frame, that is a different production setup—not a documented Live Control Room toggle.
Change YouTube’s vertical layout before you go live
YouTube documents three layout choices for the vertical version of a dual stream: Center crop, Fit to phone width, and Stacked. The default is Center crop, which can cut off the sides of a horizontal source. Compare the choices in the preview rather than assuming that one will add black bars; YouTube does not describe Fit to phone width as a black-bars effect. - On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Create, then Go live.
- In Live Control Room, open Manage and select the scheduled stream.
- In the vertical preview, select Edit layout to open the editing canvas.
- Compare Center crop, Fit to phone width, and Stacked. Adjust zoom and position where available.
- Check the preview to see how your subject and important details appear, then save or apply the layout before starting the stream.
YouTube says you can continue changing the layout through the canvas while live, but you cannot add the vertical format after the stream has started. Set up the vertical format before going live. The preview is the practical way to check the result; the documentation does not specify fixed bar dimensions or guarantee identical rendering on every device.
If you mean portrait footage inside a landscape frame
That is not the same as choosing a layout for YouTube’s vertical version of a dual stream. The reviewed YouTube instructions do not provide a dedicated black-bars procedure for placing a portrait source in a 16:9 landscape canvas, and they do not establish that any of the three vertical layout choices will produce that result. An encoder scene that scales portrait footage to fit a landscape canvas is a general production approach, but exact steps depend on the encoder and are not covered by YouTube’s layout instructions.

YouTube’s general video guidance advises against adding padding or black bars directly to a video because they can interfere with the player adapting to video size and viewer device. That advice concerns playback adaptability; it is not a specific prohibition on arranging an encoder scene. See YouTube Help: Video resolution and aspect ratios.
Check the stream before your audience sees it
Use an unlisted live stream to check audio and video quality before a mobile stream, as YouTube recommends. Confirm that the subject remains visible in the vertical preview and that the layout is appropriate for the viewing experience you intend. YouTube Help: Create a live stream on mobile.
