Netflix has two separate autoplay controls, so choose the one that matches what you see: turn off Autoplay Previews to stop trailers while browsing, or Autoplay Next Episode to stop the next episode starting after a show ends. Both are changed for a specific Netflix profile, not with one universal TV switch.

The most consistent way to change the setting is in a web browser: open Account → Profiles → select the profile used on the TV → Playback settings, turn off the relevant option, and refresh Netflix on the TV if needed. Netflix documents the two controls separately: Autoplay Previews and Autoplay Next Episode.
Stop Netflix from playing trailers and previews
- In a web browser, sign in to Netflix and open Account.
- Under Profiles, select the profile you use on the TV.
- Open Playback settings.
- Turn off Autoplay Previews.
- Return to Netflix on the TV. If previews still play, switch to another Netflix profile and back again, or sign out and sign in again.
This setting stops Netflix from automatically playing title previews as you browse. It is not a promise to remove every animated image, background effect, sound, or motion element that a particular app version may show. Netflix says the setting may not be supported on some older TVs or streaming devices; availability and behavior can vary by device and app version. Netflix’s instructions for autoplay previews explain the setting and how to refresh a device.
Stop Netflix from automatically starting the next episode
Use the same browser path—Account → Profiles → select the TV profile → Playback settings—but turn off Autoplay Next Episode. This is separate from Autoplay Previews. If you want to stop both trailers and automatic episode starts, disable both options. Netflix documents the next-episode control separately in its playback settings help.

Change the setting in the Netflix app
You can also edit a profile from the Netflix mobile app:
- Open Netflix and select a profile.
- Tap My Netflix, then tap the profile name.
- Tap Manage Profiles and choose the profile to edit.
- Turn off Autoplay Previews, Autoplay Next Episode, or both.
- On iPhone or iPad, tap Done if that option appears.
The exact labels can vary with app version, language, and device. If you cannot find Playback settings in the TV app, use a browser or the mobile-app route rather than looking for a universal setting in your television menus.

Why Netflix may still autoplay after you change the setting
The preference is tied to the profile you edited. If the TV is using a different profile, its playback behavior may not change. When multiple household members have profiles, update each one as needed. For a child’s profile, make sure you select that child’s profile; profile restrictions or a lock may require the account holder or profile PIN to make changes. - Refresh the profile on the TV. Switch to a different profile, then return to the one you changed.
- Sign out and back in. This refreshes the Netflix session on that device.
- Restart the TV or streaming device. If necessary, turn it fully off. For a device you can unplug, disconnect its power, wait 15 seconds, reconnect it, then try Netflix again. Netflix includes this restart approach in its device troubleshooting guidance.
- Check for updates. Install any available Netflix app and TV or streaming-device software updates.
- Recheck the setting in a browser. Confirm that you selected the right profile and turned off the control that matches the problem.
- Test the two behaviors separately. Browse the home screen to check previews; finish or resume an episode to check next-episode autoplay.
A change may not appear immediately in a Netflix app that was already open. Netflix recommends switching profiles or signing out and back in to refresh playback preferences.
If Netflix opens when the TV turns on
If Netflix begins playing only after the TV or streaming device wakes up, it may be resuming its previous state. The Netflix profile settings control preview and next-episode playback; they may not control whether a TV reopens its last-used app, a streaming stick resumes the last app, or the TV switches automatically to an HDMI input. A Netflix shortcut on the remote can also launch the app directly.

For that kind of startup behavior, check the support information for your specific TV or streaming device. Menu names and options depend on the model, so there is no reliable universal path to give here.
Using a phone or tablet with the TV?
First identify how you are watching: through the TV’s built-in Netflix app, a streaming device, casting, screen mirroring, or a wired video adapter. These connection methods do not necessarily support the same playback features. Netflix says Autoplay Next Episode is not supported when connecting a mobile device to a TV with a video cable or adapter. Casting and mirroring availability also depends on the device and plan. Check Netflix’s guidance for connecting a mobile device to a TV and casting and mirroring.

The profile settings are still the right place to start, but if you are playing from a phone, the phone may be the playback source. Test the setting using the same connection method you normally use.
If Playback settings or an autoplay option is missing
Open Netflix in a desktop or mobile browser and select a profile before looking for Playback settings. If the option is still unavailable, labels or support may differ by region, account type, app version, or device. Some older TVs and streaming devices do not support autoplay previews. If the account is managed or billed through a third party, Netflix advises checking with that provider about plan-related availability; see its plan and billing help. For device-specific compatibility, use Netflix’s device support guidance and the manufacturer’s documentation.
You do not need to change plans or buy a new TV simply to turn off a supported profile autoplay setting. If a device cannot apply a particular feature, confirm its compatibility before considering other options.
