If you live with the subscriber, use a profile on that account’s Netflix Household. If you live elsewhere, the account owner must add you as a paid extra member on an eligible plan, or you can open your own subscription.
That distinction matters: ordinary password sharing outside the Household is not Netflix’s approved arrangement. The routes below show which option fits, how to activate it, and what to do when Netflix asks you to verify a Household.

Choose the right Netflix arrangement

Netflix defines a Netflix Household as the devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account is watched. People outside that Household generally need an extra-member arrangement or a separate account. See Netflix’s current rules at Netflix Help Center.
How the account owner adds an extra member
The owner—not the person being invited—buys the extra-member slot and sends the invitation. Netflix’s labels can vary by account, country and billing method, so use the current options shown in the account-management area rather than relying on an old menu path.

- Open the account or membership-management area and check whether an extra member is available.
- Purchase an available extra-member slot.
- Send the invitation to the person who lives outside the Household.
- Have the invitee open the invitation and complete activation.
- If Netflix offers profile transfer, choose it to carry over eligible recommendations, viewing history, My List, settings and saved games.
An invitation created in Canada must be activated in the same country. Netflix also warns that some overseas territories may be blocked. An extra member receives one profile, and that profile cannot use a profile-lock PIN; see Netflix’s extra-member profile guidance.
How the invited person activates the extra-member account
- Open the invitation email from the account owner.
- Follow its activation link instead of starting an unrelated signup.
- Create or confirm the login details Netflix requests.
- Accept the single extra-member profile, or use the offered profile-transfer option.
- Sign in on supported devices with the new credentials.
The extra member is not simply given the owner’s password. Activation must match the country where the owner created the slot, and the slot must still be available and supported by the account’s billing arrangement.
How to create your own Netflix account in Canada
Computer
- Go to netflix.com/signup.
- Choose a plan.
- Enter an email address and create a password.
- Add a payment method.
- Start watching.
Smart TV or streaming device
- Open the Netflix app.
- Enter an email address or phone number when prompted.
- Open the activation link Netflix sends by email or SMS.
- Choose a plan, create the account and add payment details.
Android
Use netflix.com/signup in a mobile browser. The Android app may begin the process but can redirect you to the browser to finish.

Complete signup in a mobile browser; Netflix does not support direct signup inside its iOS app. Afterward, download the app and sign in.

Netflix Canada’s landing page currently shows plans from $7.99 to $23.99 per month before tax. Treat Netflix Canada and the live checkout as the authority: retrieved Netflix pages have displayed inconsistent currency labels, and prices can change with local conditions, taxes or inflation. Do not assume an extra-member fee until it appears in the Canadian account flow.

Fix a Netflix Household verification message
A Household update identifies the account’s main viewing location. It does not authorize a second home.
- On the compatible TV connected to the home internet, press the Back button. On Apple TV, press Menu.
- Open Get Help or Settings.
- Select Manage Netflix Household.
- Select Update Netflix Household.
- Choose Send Email or, when offered, Send Text.
- Open the message, select Yes, This Was Me, then Confirm Update.
The verification link expires after 15 minutes. The owner must be able to access the account email or phone. Netflix says a person who never watches on a TV and does not have one does not need to establish a Household. Full instructions are in Netflix’s Household guide.

When Netflix is billed through a carrier or other provider
Mobile carriers, cable companies, internet providers and other package vendors can impose different rules. Some Netflix-included packages do not support extra members; others require the owner to add a secondary payment method for extra-member charges. Provider billing can also limit plan changes.
Before switching or downgrading a package, read the provider-specific information in Netflix’s package-provider guidance or contact the provider. If a package is changed to one with fewer permitted slots, existing extra members may be canceled immediately after the account is linked.
Common problems and fixes
There is no extra-member option
- Check whether the plan is ad-supported.
- Confirm that Netflix is not billed through an unsupported provider package.
- Check whether the plan’s slots are already full.
- Review the current account and provider-specific Help Center information before changing plans.
The invitation fails
- Activate in the same country where the owner created the slot.
- Use the invitation itself, not an independent signup flow.
- Check that the invitation has not expired or already been accepted.
- Confirm the owner still has a slot and a supported payment arrangement.
The owner is traveling
Temporary travel is not permanent authorization for someone in another home. Persistent use outside the Household should use an extra member or an independent account.

The subscriber moved within Canada
An internal move may require updating the Household and billing information so the main viewing location is correct.
The subscriber moved from another country to Canada
Netflix says the membership remains tied to the country of original signup—including its currency and payment setup—until the subscriber cancels and restarts in the new country. Follow Netflix’s country-change guidance.
What happens if sharing stops?
An extra member depends on the owner’s eligible plan and payment arrangement. If the owner cancels, changes to an ineligible package or loses the slot, the extra-member access can end. Someone who needs uninterrupted control should use a separate account and, where Netflix offers it, transfer the existing profile during that transition.
The Bottom Line
For a person in the same Canadian home, use the Household account. For someone elsewhere, use an eligible paid extra-member invitation—or create a separate Netflix subscription when the plan, provider, country or profile limits make that the better choice.
