To show a changing track label in a 24/7 YouTube music stream, add an overlay to the outgoing video in OBS or similar streaming software. The overlay needs both a source of current-track metadata and a visual layer that displays it. Choose an integration that matches the app actually playing your music: the documented routes here cover VLC local files and YTMDesktop2, not every music player or a YouTube browser tab.
How the track label gets into the stream
A visible now-playing label is part of the transmitted picture. Your playback source provides the current track information; an OBS text or browser source renders it as an overlay. Changing the YouTube broadcast title or description changes the video’s metadata, but does not by itself put a changing label on screen.
Google describes a liveBroadcast resource as “an event that will be streamed, via live video, on YouTube.” Its title and description are broadcast or video metadata fields, distinct from graphics included in the outgoing picture. See the YouTube Live Streaming API Reference.
Choose a route that matches the music player
| Playback source | Route | What it can display | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLC local files | OBS script that reads a VLC Video Source | Title, artist, and album tags; formatted text exported to a file | The cited resource lists Linux, OBS 27.0 or higher with Python scripting enabled, and Python 3. Mutagen is optional and recommended. |
| YTMDesktop2 | Its local API and OBS Browser Source | Layouts include title-and-artist text, a ticker, cards, artwork, and progress | Playback must be running through YTMDesktop2; this is not a universal player bridge. |
| Another player | Identify and verify a compatible metadata integration first | Depends on the player and integration | The documentation cited here does not establish a universal way to read metadata from arbitrary players or a YouTube browser tab. |
Use a VLC Video Source and text file
This is the relevant route when your music comes from local files played through VLC. The OBS resource describes a script that detects the current song in a VLC Video Source, reads title, artist, and album tags, and can write the current song to a text file for OBS to display.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check the requirements. Confirm you are using Linux, OBS 27.0 or later with Python scripting enabled, and Python 3. The resource recommends Mutagen as an optional aid for reading metadata.
- Prepare and inspect your files. Check that each file has the title and artist tags you want shown. The script can fall back to the filename when tags are absent, but that may produce an unhelpful label.
- Set up the script and VLC source. Follow the current installation and configuration directions on the OBS VLC Video Source song-information resource. Configure it to read the VLC Video Source used for playback.
- Choose the display format. The resource supports formats such as
{title} - {artist}. Select a format that remains legible over your video. - Connect the exported text to OBS. Add an OBS text source configured to read the script’s output text file, then position and style it in the scene that goes to YouTube.
- Check transitions and restarts. Verify that the displayed text changes when VLC advances to another track, and check it again after restarting the player or OBS. The resource describes detection and display features, not guaranteed 24/7 timing or recovery.
Use YTMDesktop2’s OBS browser overlay
If the music is playing in YTMDesktop2, its documented local API can provide now-playing data to an OBS Browser Source. The app offers several layouts, including a full or compact card, title-and-artist text, a badge, fullscreen artwork, a vertical stack, and a ticker; artwork, title, artist, and progress can be toggled.
- Enable the API in YTMDesktop2. Use the app’s settings to turn on its local API.
- Open the app’s OBS settings and copy its OBS URL. The YTMDesktop2 guide gives a default local URL; use the URL and setup instructions shown by your installed version.
- Add it to OBS. In OBS, add a Browser Source and paste the copied URL. Choose a layout and display options that fit your scene.
- Protect the client token. The guide says a paired client token is required in the URL when authentication is enabled. Treat a private token like a password: do not publish it or include it in a publicly visible scene or link.
- Preview actual track changes. Confirm that title and artist update as playback changes, and check long titles, missing details, and the overlay after restarting the app or OBS.
See the YTMDesktop2 OBS Now Playing Overlay guide for the integration’s documented setup and layout options. It applies to playback through that app; it does not establish compatibility with unrelated players.

If your metadata is incomplete or your player is different
Improve the source data first
An overlay cannot reliably show information the playback source does not provide. For VLC files, correct missing or inaccurate title and artist tags rather than relying on filename fallback. For YTMDesktop2, confirm that the app itself displays the intended track details before adjusting the OBS layout.
Investigate other integrations cautiously
The OBS “What’s Now Playing” resource history mentions MusicBrainz support and fallback, templates, artwork, and handling for some metadata edge cases. That history is not a complete current setup manual, so verify its present compatibility and follow its current instructions before relying on it. See the OBS What’s Now Playing update history.

If you use another player, first establish whether it exposes current-track metadata and whether a compatible OBS integration can read it. Do not assume an integration for VLC or YTMDesktop2 can read that player—or a music tab in a browser.
Make the label readable and check the 24/7 handoff
- Show at least the track title and artist when both are available. Use a compact text or ticker layout when a card or artwork would crowd the picture.
- Preview long titles and missing artist details; make sure text remains readable over the video and does not cover important content.
- Watch a track transition and confirm that the on-screen information changes rather than remaining stuck on the previous song.
- Check the overlay after restarting the player and OBS. The documented integrations describe metadata display capabilities, but do not establish long-duration uptime, timing, or restart recovery.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded music stream running without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a separate YouTube-only cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. That keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Its first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. This does not replace the OBS overlay methods above when you need a changing now-playing label rendered into the video. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
