The key limitation is preservation: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a complete copy matters, plan local recording and backups independently of YouTube’s archive.
What you need before starting
This workflow is for broadcasting recorded footage as a live stream, not for sending a live camera feed. You need footage you are entitled to publish, an encoder that can sequence the clips, a reliable streaming computer or hardware encoder, an internet connection, and a plan to monitor the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance establishes how to connect an encoder; it does not endorse a particular encoder or specify a tested 24/7 playback system.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- An encoder capable of sending your recorded sequence to YouTube. Confirm that it can play the files in order, repeat or otherwise sequence them as intended, and recover sensibly if playback or the connection is interrupted. These capabilities vary by product; test them rather than assuming them.
- A local recording and enough storage for the retention period you want. YouTube recommends checking the local archive file, but the space required depends on your recording settings and how long you keep footage.
- A monitoring and recovery plan for encoder, computer, network, and power interruptions.
Prepare the wildlife archive and clear rights
Organize clips for viewers
Make a sequence that has a clear viewing logic, such as rotating among camera locations or time periods. Where known, keep capture date, camera or site, and species identification with each clip. On-screen labels, periodic narration, or other educational context can help viewers understand what they are watching. These are editorial choices, not YouTube requirements.
Check footage and sound permissions
Confirm that the channel has the necessary rights to publish every clip and any accompanying audio. Review soundtracks for music or third-party sounds that may need separate clearance. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for the necessary rights and legal compliance on the streamer. Permission to use material and eligibility to monetize it are separate questions.

Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream using the encoder option. YouTube’s instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Enter them in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it, and replace it in Studio if it is exposed.
- Load the clip sequence in the encoder. Configure its playlist, scenes, or playback sequence to match the archive presentation you prepared. The exact controls differ by encoder; the YouTube setup instructions do not prescribe a particular software package or loop setting.
- Test playback locally before sending it live. Check that clips start and transition as intended, labels remain readable, and audio is present only where you expect it. Test the sequence for long enough to catch problems that a brief preview would miss.
- Start the encoder feed and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Inspect the incoming picture and sound before starting the public broadcast. YouTube recommends preparing and testing encoder events in advance; see YouTube live streaming tips.
- Start the stream from YouTube Studio when the preview is correct. Check the public watch page as well as the control-room preview to confirm the broadcast is accessible to viewers.
Choose quality settings by testing your encoder
The YouTube sources cited here do not establish a specific bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, computer specification, or bandwidth requirement for this wildlife-archive workflow. Those values depend on the source files, encoder, and connection. Use the encoder’s current guidance for its YouTube output settings, test the actual sequence, and inspect the resulting feed in Live Control Room rather than relying on a universal number.
Plan the broadcast and archive separately
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream shorter than 12 hours, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes a single continuous 24/7 broadcast an unreliable way to preserve a complete archive. The threshold is YouTube’s archive guidance, not a promise that every shorter stream will be preserved. If preservation matters, record locally while streaming, verify that the recording file is actually being written and can be played, and back it up to storage appropriate for your retention needs. You can also plan shorter broadcast sessions, but YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a session length or guarantee an archive outcome. Keep the local recording plan independent of the public stream.
Monitor the stream and plan recovery
A 24/7 broadcast needs operational attention; an encoder connection alone does not provide a 24/7 reliability guarantee. YouTube recommends checking stream accessibility and monitoring audio and video quality. During operation:

- Check Live Control Room and the public watch page, including from a mobile device.
- Listen for missing, unexpected, or distorted audio and look for frozen, black, or incorrectly sequenced video.
- Verify that the local recording continues to grow and that earlier files remain playable.
- Know how you will restart or reconnect the encoder after an interruption, and how you will check whether YouTube is receiving the feed again.
A UPS or external SSD may be useful implementation choices, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not require or specifically endorse them. A UPS cannot prevent internet or platform outages. YouTube does not specify a redundant 24/7 architecture or guarantee uptime for this setup.
Understand monetization and reused-content review
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and are reviewed at the channel level. Its channel monetization policies address reused content and “inauthentic content.” Republished material may be ineligible when it lacks significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. A permission or license to use wildlife clips does not by itself make a channel eligible for monetization.

Make the archive’s origin and the channel’s relationship to it clear, and give the sequence useful editorial, educational, or entertainment context. An overlay, label, or narration may help explain the material but cannot guarantee approval; YouTube evaluates the channel under its policies.
