In OBS, add a now-playing overlay as a Browser Source if your overlay provider supplies a URL and can read metadata from your music setup. If automatic track detection is unavailable or unreliable, use an OBS text source and update the title and artist manually. Test the display before going live—and remember that showing a credit is not permission to use the music.
Choose how the track information will update
| Method | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser Source overlay | OBS loads a web page into the scene. If the overlay provider can receive metadata from your player or audio setup, it may display the current track. | Confirm the provider supports your specific music source and that its URL updates the title and artist. OBS’s documentation explains how Browser Sources render web pages; it does not verify any provider’s music integrations. OBS Browser Source |
| OBS text source | Add track and artist text directly to the scene and edit it when the music changes. | It depends on you updating the text, but it is a practical fallback if you cannot confirm a dependable metadata feed. You can also add an image source for artwork. OBS Sources Guide |
A browser overlay is not automatically a now-playing display just because it loads in OBS. The metadata connection between your music source and the provider is a separate dependency; verify it before relying on automatic updates.
Add the track display in OBS
- Prepare the overlay or text. For automatic updates, get the stream-ready URL from an overlay provider and confirm that it can read track metadata from your chosen player or audio setup. For manual updates, prepare a text source with the track title and artist; add an image source if you want to show artwork.
- Open the scene for the podcast. In OBS, use the Sources panel to add a Browser Source for the overlay, or add a Text source for the manual version. OBS’s Sources Guide covers adding and arranging scene sources.
- Set the Browser Source dimensions. Enter the provider URL and set the source’s width and height to fit the overlay in your scene. Position and resize it on the canvas. For a text source, edit the text and style it for legibility at the size it will appear in the stream. See OBS Browser Source.
- Arrange the layer order and placement. Place the track display above the background so it remains visible. Keep it clear of faces, captions, and other essential visuals; OBS displays sources according to their order in the Sources panel.
- Check your audio and stream setup. Confirm that the intended microphone and program audio are reaching the broadcast. OBS’s Quick Start Guide walks through audio devices and stream setup.
- Test before the show. Preview the scene, check that the overlay loads, and change tracks to see whether the displayed title and artist update. Confirm the text is legible on your stream canvas and that the overlay does not remain stale. If you use manual text, update it as part of your show workflow.
Handle music rights separately from the track display
A song title or artist credit does not grant permission to broadcast the recording or composition. YouTube says that all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match can trigger a warning, replace the stream with a placeholder, or interrupt or terminate the broadcast. YouTube also warns that a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the channel has not been added to the rightsholder’s Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube Help’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
- Confirm that your permission covers the music in the live transmission and any archived replay.
- If you use licensed third-party music, coordinate with the rightsholder, label, or distributor about channel allowlisting where applicable. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music: Going Live for Music Channels.
- Check your channel’s current live-stream eligibility and instructions in YouTube Studio. YouTube for Artists says first-time creators should enable live streaming and verify the account at least 24 hours ahead; check the current channel-specific requirements before your planned broadcast.
Troubleshoot a missing or stale now-playing display
- The Browser Source is blank: check that the URL is correct and that the source’s dimensions and placement put it on the visible canvas. If it remains blank, consult the overlay provider’s setup guidance; OBS’s Browser Source documentation describes the source, not the provider’s service.
- The overlay loads but does not change tracks: the page may be working while its metadata feed is not. Verify that the provider supports your player or audio setup and that the feed is connected. Keep a manual text source ready as a fallback.
- Text is hard to read or covers important content: resize or reposition the source, adjust the text styling, and check the result in the scene preview at the intended stream layout.
- The show has no expected microphone or program audio: check OBS’s selected audio devices and stream settings using the OBS Quick Start Guide; a track graphic does not route or verify audio.
- YouTube interrupts the live stream: investigate the music rights and any required allowlisting with the relevant rightsholder or distributor. Changing the on-screen credit does not resolve a copyright match.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the podcast format uses uploaded recordings on a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo can keep that stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer does not need to stay on at home. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube.
