Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your YouTube stream starts dropping frames after OBS shows an “Encoding overloaded” warning, don’t assume the internet is the cause. OBS rendering lag, OBS encoding lag, and network-dropped frames are different problems—and more than one can happen at once. Check OBS’s Stats window and log to identify which counter is rising, then use the matching fix below.
First identify which frames are being lost
The warning tells you OBS is having trouble keeping up with its workload; by itself, it does not identify the bottleneck. OBS’s performance guidance, dated June 12, 2021, distinguishes rendering and encoding problems. Its connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, treats network-dropped frames as a separate issue involving the route to the ingest server. Check the counters and log before changing settings.
- Encoding lag or skipped frames: OBS is not encoding the configured output quickly enough.
- Rendering lag or stalls: OBS is not compositing and rendering frames on time. A game or another GPU-heavy task may leave too little GPU capacity for OBS.
- Network dropped frames: OBS cannot reliably deliver data to the ingest server at the configured bitrate, or the connection stalls.
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames while streaming. Use Help > Log Files > View Current Log to inspect the session’s details. YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages provide a second view of what is reaching YouTube. The counters tell you which branch to investigate; they do not, by themselves, prove which device or service caused the problem.
If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag
Work from the least disruptive changes toward the ones that reduce stream quality or require scene rebuilding. Test one change at a time and watch the same OBS counters during a representative stream.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Free up GPU capacity
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS says this can allow Windows to reserve some GPU capacity for OBS. This is a Windows-specific test, not a fix for network drops.
- Close GPU-heavy programs you recognize if they are not needed during the broadcast. Avoid closing unfamiliar system processes.
- If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync. If rendering lag continues, lower the game’s graphics settings. A game can appear to run smoothly while leaving too little GPU time for OBS to composite the stream.
Reduce the OBS output workload
- Try a lower output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not keeping up, test 30 fps. Frame rate affects both rendering and encoding workload.
- Keep the base canvas resolution unchanged at first. Lowering it can mean resizing and repositioning sources; consider it when less disruptive steps have not resolved severe resource constraints.
- Simplify scenes for a test: disable filters, reduce the dimensions of large browser sources, and replace animated overlays with static images or media where suitable. Large scene collections can also add overhead; split them if needed.
If the counter that is rising is encoding lag, reducing output resolution or frame rate lowers the work OBS must encode. If rendering lag is rising, freeing GPU capacity and simplifying compositing are especially relevant. Check the counters again after each change so you do not mistake improvement in one category for a fix to another.
Check Windows-specific interactions only when applicable
OBS’s performance guidance also discusses Game Capture multi-adapter compatibility and Game DVR or Game Mode behavior. These checks depend on the Windows version and capture setup; verify the current operating system and relevant setting before changing it. They are not general fixes for network-dropped frames.

If OBS reports network-dropped frames
When the network dropped-frame counter rises, investigate the connection and bitrate separately from the encoder warning. A lower bitrate may improve continuity if your stable upload capacity cannot sustain the current setting, but it reduces video data available for the same picture.
- Check stable upload capacity. Run an upload speed test and choose a bitrate that your connection can sustain consistently. OBS’s network guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic—not a guarantee of safe capacity. Other household traffic and connection variability can affect what is actually available to the stream.
- Lower the video bitrate if needed. Stay within YouTube’s current recommendations and limits for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. Change bitrate only as a network test; it does not resolve local rendering or encoding lag.
- Try a different ingest server if OBS offers one and compare the network counter. Testing another streaming service can help distinguish a service-specific issue, but it is a diagnostic comparison rather than a YouTube fix.
- Prefer wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi when practical. Wi-Fi can be unstable; an Ethernet connection can help test whether the wireless link is part of the problem. It will not fix GPU rendering or encoder overload.
- Review software that can affect network traffic. Check VPNs, security software, network-priority or optimization utilities, and outdated network drivers. OBS names Lenovo Vantage and Killer NIC as examples of utilities that may deprioritize OBS.
- Consider the whole network path if drops persist: modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender. If you are unsure whether hardware is faulty, OBS advises contacting your ISP before replacing equipment.
OBS also documents Windows-only options such as network optimizations or TCP pacing, and dynamic bitrate. Use those only when applicable to your system and after basic diagnosis. Dynamic bitrate can lower quality to keep a stream going; it does not repair the underlying connection.

Match YouTube settings to the connection and workload
YouTube’s encoder guidance, reviewed October 3, 2026, recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and H.264, H.265, or AV1. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These are stream compatibility and configuration recommendations; they do not establish that your computer can render or encode the chosen settings.
| YouTube-recommended example | Recommended bitrate | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps | Confirm the stable upload connection can sustain the configured rate. |
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps | Higher output settings also require OBS and the system to handle the workload. |
| 720p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | Use only a codec supported by your encoder and YouTube configuration. |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not independent test results or a promise that a particular connection can carry the stream. YouTube lists minimum rates as well; check its current encoder settings table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you choose, since guidance can change.

Before an important broadcast, test with representative movement and audio, not only a static scene. YouTube recommends selecting a quality level reliable for the available connection, testing upload speed, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. If the counters stay clear at a lower output setting but rise again at a higher one, the higher setting is not stable for the present setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a controlled troubleshooting test
- Record the OBS rendering-lag, encoding-lag, and network-dropped-frame counters at the start of a representative test.
- Change one relevant setting: for example, cap game FPS for rendering lag, lower output resolution or frame rate for encoding lag, or reduce bitrate and test Ethernet for network drops.
- Keep the same scene, content, and approximate test duration where possible. Compare the counters and YouTube stream health after the change.
- If more than one counter rises, address each branch separately. A network improvement does not prove the encoder is fixed, and a smoother encoder does not prove the connection is stable.
Common symptoms and next actions
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | First useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding lag rises; network drops remain low | Encoder workload or system capacity | Lower output resolution or frame rate; reduce competing workload. |
| Rendering lag rises, especially during gameplay | GPU capacity, game frame rate, or scene complexity | Cap game FPS, reduce game graphics, or simplify a scene. |
| Network dropped frames rise | Upload capacity, Wi-Fi, software prioritization, or ingest route | Check stable upload, reduce bitrate if needed, and test wired Ethernet. |
| More than one counter rises | Multiple bottlenecks may be present | Change one setting in each relevant branch and recheck all counters. |
