Put the countdown in the program feed your encoder sends to YouTube. The most reliable simple method is to make a short countdown video and place it between your prerecorded videos; alternatively, build a countdown scene in your encoder and switch to it between items. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow does not provide a native between-video countdown control.
Why the countdown has to come from your encoder
YouTube receives a live program from an encoder. YouTube Help describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its setup guidance explains how to connect an encoder to a live stream, but does not document a control that inserts a countdown automatically between prerecorded items. The timer therefore needs to be part of the outgoing program.
That distinction matters for a 24/7 channel: a countdown added to a video’s YouTube description, or displayed on a separate webpage, will not appear in the live picture. It must be included in the video sequence or shown as a scene by the encoder.
Choose how to make the countdown
Use a rendered countdown clip
Create a short video showing the timer, then put it between the two prerecorded videos in the sequence sent to the encoder. This is the simplest approach to reason about: the countdown is just another media segment. You can control its appearance and duration before adding it to the program.

Check the clip’s picture and sound before using it. Decide whether you want music, narration, or silence, and make sure its ending transitions cleanly into the next video.
Use a countdown scene in the encoder
A software encoder can also display a scene with a timer graphic between videos. In OBS, for example, this means arranging the scene and timer source, then switching to that scene at the right point in your playback sequence. The exact setup depends on the encoder and timer source you choose; YouTube’s encoder instructions do not define a universal scene or countdown configuration.
This method gives you flexibility to change the timer design without rendering a new clip, but it requires the scene to be activated and reset correctly as the sequence repeats.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live

In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and locate its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or include it in a public screenshot.

In your encoder, enter the stream URL and stream key in its YouTube streaming settings. OBS is one software encoder option in the YouTube ecosystem. Interface labels can vary by encoder version, so use that encoder’s current connection instructions rather than relying on a possibly outdated menu path.

Before leaving the stream unattended, test the full transition from one video through the countdown and into the next. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health while the stream is running.

Timing: Confirm that the countdown starts after the preceding video ends, reaches zero as intended, and does not restart or remain frozen when the sequence repeats.

Picture and motion: Watch the transition at the intended stream resolution and frame rate. Look for blank frames, unintended overlays, or a timer that is difficult to read.

Audio: Check whether the preceding video’s sound stops, whether the countdown has audio, and whether the next video begins at the expected level. Test with representative material, not only a silent placeholder.

Stream health: Watch the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health; the countdown itself does not replace that check.

Unattended operation: For a continuous stream, verify that media advances, the timer resets at the correct point, audio behaves as planned, and the encoder remains connected. These are practical checks for a continuous-feed workflow, not special YouTube countdown requirements.

Common problems and fixes
The countdown is not visible on YouTube
It may exist only in a separate editor, browser, or scene that is not part of the encoder’s program output. Confirm that the countdown clip is in the playback sequence or that the encoder has actually switched to the countdown scene.
The timer does not reset between videos
A scene-based timer may keep running or preserve its previous state when revisited. Test a complete repeat of the sequence and adjust the timer source or scene workflow so it starts at the intended value each time. If reliable resetting is difficult, use a rendered clip with a fixed duration.
The next video starts too early or too late
Check the order and timing of the media sequence, including whether the preceding item has ended before the countdown begins. Test the whole transition rather than judging it from the timer scene alone.
The stream is unstable or stops
Check the encoder connection and YouTube stream health. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring; an interstitial cannot correct a dropped encoder feed.
