How to Set YouTube Bitrate for a 24/7 Podcast Stream in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 24/7 YouTube podcast stream, set H.264 video to 14 Mbps at 1080p30 or 8 Mbps at 720p30, then choose the option your upload connection can sustain reliably. These are YouTube’s general live-ingest recommendations, not India-specific settings or a special 24/7 preset. The important variables are codec, resolution, frame rate and dependable upload capacity at the streaming location.

Recommended YouTube bitrate settings

Use the row matching the video format and codec you actually send to YouTube. The figures below are for live ingest, not prerecorded video uploads. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists these values for 30 fps formats. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the controlling reference.

Ingest format H.264 minimum H.264 recommended AV1/H.265 minimum AV1/H.265 recommended
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps

For a conventional H.264 podcast feed, start with 1080p30 at 14 Mbps if the connection is stable. If it cannot reliably sustain that rate, step down to 720p30 at 8 Mbps rather than forcing a higher-resolution stream that drops frames or loses connection. YouTube does not publish a podcast-specific bitrate discount for static or low-motion video; judge any lower setting with a realistic test.

Set up the encoder for a continuous stream

  1. Enable live streaming and create an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it. A channel must be verified and have live streaming enabled; first-time enablement can take at least 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming availability guidance.
  2. Choose the output format. For a standard podcast layout, use landscape 16:9 when that matches the video design. Set the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to match the output you selected, such as 1920×1080 at 30 fps or 1280×720 at 30 fps.
  3. Set video bitrate and rate control. Choose the matching value in the table and use constant bitrate (CBR), as recommended by YouTube. Configure audio separately; YouTube lists stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz in its live encoder guidance.
  4. Set keyframes and protocol. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds and do not exceed 4 seconds. Use RTMPS where available. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Encoder settings and supported configurations.
  5. Test from the actual streaming location. Run the show with its usual audio and visual motion on the network you intend to use. Watch the Live Control Room stream health and resolve warnings before relying on a continuous broadcast. YouTube’s stream health troubleshooting guidance.
  6. Run a longer operational test. Check that your encoder and connection stay stable over an extended run, and decide how you will recover after a lost connection or encoder restart. YouTube does not prescribe a test duration or document a special 24/7 bitrate profile.

Choosing between 1080p and 720p

Base the choice on both presentation and reliability. 1080p can suit a detailed visual layout, while 720p is a practical lower-bandwidth option when the uplink is inconsistent. The listed bitrate is the video ingest target, not a promise that an internet plan’s advertised upload speed will remain available throughout the stream. Test the connection while the encoder is sending, under conditions representative of the actual broadcast.

YouTube’s stated upload-speed target of 1.5–2 times the combined target bitrate applies to simulstreaming to multiple destinations. It is not stated as a mandatory margin for a single YouTube stream. For one destination, YouTube advises speed-testing and selecting a quality appropriate to the connection. YouTube’s speed and encoder guidance.

Latency and 24/7 channel limits

Latency for a podcast

If the podcast has no live audience interaction, lower latency is less important. Lower-latency settings can increase playback buffering, so normal latency is a sensible default unless interaction or another production requirement makes a shorter delay worthwhile. YouTube’s latency guidance.

Concurrent streams

YouTube currently documents up to 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These are concurrency limits, not a stated maximum continuous broadcast duration. YouTube’s live-streaming limits.

Troubleshooting bitrate and stream-health problems

  • Bitrate warning or unstable picture: Check that the encoder’s selected codec, resolution and frame rate match the row used for the bitrate. If the connection cannot sustain the setting, lower the output resolution and use its corresponding recommendation.
  • Connection drops or the encoder cannot keep up: Test the upload while streaming, then use a lower-resolution setting if the uplink is unreliable. A speed test taken at another time or location may not represent the conditions of a long-running broadcast.
  • Audio or stream-configuration warning: Verify the audio is stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, and confirm the keyframe interval is 2 seconds or less than or equal to YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
  • Stream will not start: Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel, the correct stream key and stream URL are in the encoder, and the key has not been exposed or replaced. First-time channel enablement can take at least 24 hours.
  • Stream stops after another broadcast starts: Check whether you have reached YouTube’s active-stream limits of 10 per channel or 3 per stream key.

Use YouTube’s Live Control Room stream-health indicators to diagnose warnings rather than changing bitrate blindly.

Copyright and reused material in a 24/7 podcast

Bitrate settings do not grant permission to rebroadcast music, clips or other material. Before looping episodes or adding music and video, ensure you have the rights needed for the content and understand YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies. Repeated or prerecorded programming should also be presented honestly as such; technical continuity does not guarantee eligibility for monetization or protection from claims.
