You can run a sustained YouTube stream from a low-end PC with OBS, but no setting guarantees an uninterrupted or indefinite broadcast. Start with a modest 720p30 profile, use a bitrate your own upload connection can sustain, and test privately from the exact PC, network and location you plan to use. If the computer or connection cannot keep up, step down to 480p30 or 360p30.
What “continuous” means for an OBS stream
OBS sends your video to YouTube through your PC and internet connection. How long the stream remains healthy depends on the encoder, scene complexity, power, the stability of your local network and ISP route, and YouTube’s handling of the stream. The official guidance does not establish a PC minimum or India-wide upload speed that guarantees a continuous broadcast.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a stream lasting longer than 12 hours, nor does it promise that a single OBS session will run indefinitely. Plan to monitor a long broadcast and arrange a controlled restart if needed.
Check your YouTube channel and prepare a test stream
- Confirm the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s general live guidance sets a minimum age of 16.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key for OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it in a screenshot or on stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and encoder setup instructions.
- Set up OBS, then start a private or unlisted test. Check the YouTube preview and stream health, and test representative audio and motion before switching to a public, sustained broadcast.
A private test is especially important in India because your actual ISP, upload plan, local network and route to YouTube—not the country name alone—determine whether the chosen settings work.

Choose a low-load video profile
Run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard in OBS as an initial estimate, then test the result. OBS warns that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream adequately; encoder choice, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity all affect performance. The bitrate values are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them or a statement that lower bitrates are forbidden. YouTube’s full encoder settings table covers other resolutions and codecs.

- In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720 and Common FPS Values to 30 as a starting profile, not a guaranteed best setting.
- Keep the Base (Canvas) Resolution appropriate for your scene. Output resolution can be lower than the canvas. Lowering the canvas instead is more disruptive because you may need to reposition and resize sources.
- If OBS encoding or rendering falls behind, try 480p30 or 360p30, simplify scenes and reduce expensive or high-resolution sources. OBS specifically suggests reducing 60 fps to 30 where necessary. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
Select an encoder and set the bitrate
Use hardware encoding if your PC supports it well
A supported hardware encoder moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, which can help a constrained processor. Performance and quality depend on the hardware generation, however; older implementations may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate. OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC (GeForce 750 Ti / 900 series or newer, with generation caveats), AMD AMF, Intel QSV (Core-i generation 2xxx supported, 4xxx or newer recommended), and Apple VideoToolbox. Set a bitrate your upload can actually sustain
Run a speed test on the same connection and at the location where the PC will stream. OBS suggests using around 75% of total upload speed as a starting video bitrate when troubleshooting; this is a guideline, not an India-specific rule or a guarantee. Then test the streaming path itself. If the connection drops or cannot keep up, lower the bitrate and test again. Do not choose settings from a headline upload-speed figure alone: stability matters as well as capacity. YouTube’s recommendations describe its ingest settings, not the performance of your ISP or home network.
Configure OBS output and the YouTube connection
- In Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service and enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private.
- In Settings → Output, use a video encoder available on your PC and set rate control to CBR. For a basic broadly compatible setup, use H.264 video and AAC audio. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 support, but use them only if your installed encoder and workflow support them.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
- For stereo audio, YouTube’s guidance recommends 128 Kbps. Check that the selected audio device is the one producing your program audio.
- Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the feed to Google’s servers. Its guidance accepts AAC or MP3 audio.

Keep the low-end PC and network from falling behind
- For “encoding overloaded” or choppy output: lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes and scene collections, reduce demanding sources, close GPU-heavy applications, and cap a game’s frame rate if you are gaming. On Windows, OBS suggests trying Run as administrator.
- For dropped frames: treat this first as a connection-to-ingest problem, not the same symptom as encoding overload. Reduce bitrate, try another ingest server if available, check network software and drivers, and test with a wired connection. OBS notes that instability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain can cause dropped frames.
- Prefer Ethernet if practical. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A cable can improve the local link between PC and router, but it cannot fix weak ISP service, insufficient upload capacity or congestion upstream.
- Check stream health in YouTube Studio. Prepare the encoder in advance, inspect the preview and test representative audio and motion before relying on a long session.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers’ devices and networks, so you do not need to encode separate low-bitrate versions for each viewer.
Plan for long sessions, copyright and local recording
Schedule monitoring and a controlled restart plan for a long-running broadcast rather than assuming one OBS process or stream key will run forever. If you need a local copy, make a separate recording test first: recording can consume storage and add encoder load on a low-end PC. The available OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish how that trade-off will affect your particular machine.
