Open the stream’s YouTube watch page and check whether YouTube presents it as a current live broadcast. A 24/7 title, moving cartoon images or an available play button is not proof: after a stream ends, its replay or highlights may remain available as ordinary videos. If needed, cross-check YouTube’s Live area; channel owners and developers can also use the authorized YouTube Live Streaming API to check for active broadcasts.
Check the stream on YouTube
- Open the specific watch page. Look for YouTube’s current-live presentation of the broadcast. YouTube describes live streams as media broadcast in real time, but the exact badge, wording or placement can vary by device, app, geography and interface updates.
- Cross-check YouTube’s Live area if you are unsure. YouTube Help describes this area as a way to browse current and upcoming streams. Look for the same broadcast or channel there; its appearance is useful corroboration, not a guarantee that every interface updates at precisely the same moment.
- Use Live Chat only as a supporting clue. A chat alongside the watch page can indicate live interaction, but chat availability alone does not prove the broadcast is live. Chat is not available in embedded players, so check the actual YouTube watch page rather than an embed.
Tell a live broadcast from a replay
Continued playback tells you that video is available, not that the event is still happening. YouTube says that after a live stream ends, a channel may post highlights or a replay, which appear as videos. A cartoon loop can therefore look continuous while being an archive—or can be part of a current broadcast. Use YouTube’s current-live status on the watch page, not the animation, title or playback alone, to distinguish them.
Check status through the API if you administer the channel
For an authorized technical check, the YouTube Live Streaming API’s liveBroadcasts.list method supports the broadcastStatus=active filter, defined as returning current live broadcasts. The method requires an authorized request; its mine option is for the authenticated user’s own broadcasts, so this is not an anonymous way to check any channel.
Do not confuse an incoming feed with a public broadcast
YouTube models the incoming video feed as a liveStream resource and the event viewers watch as a separate liveBroadcast resource. The feed’s status.streamStatus can be active when YouTube is receiving data, while the broadcast has its own lifecycle status. An active input by itself does not establish that the public broadcast is live; check the broadcast status for that conclusion.

Allow for a start transition
Google’s Live Streaming API workflow documentation says a broadcast typically takes 5–10 seconds to become live after the start action and may take up to one minute. During the transition its lifecycle can be liveStarting; when it reaches live, viewers can watch it. This describes the API workflow and is not a guarantee that every viewer interface updates with identical timing.
If the status is unclear
- The video plays, but YouTube does not identify it as live: treat playback as inconclusive. Check the Live area and whether the watch page identifies a current broadcast; the video may be a replay or highlights.
- Live Chat is missing: absence of chat is not a definitive status test. Confirm you are on the watch page rather than an embedded player, then use YouTube’s live presentation and Live area.
- The channel just started the broadcast: wait briefly and check again. The documented API transition is typically 5–10 seconds and can take up to a minute.
- The feed is active in a technical monitor, but viewers cannot watch: check the broadcast lifecycle separately. Receiving stream data and having a viewer-facing live broadcast are distinct states.
