For a spoken church service on a fixed or mostly fixed camera, start with OBS output at 1280 × 720, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC audio. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30, but that is platform ingestion guidance—not proof that a particular Indian broadband connection can sustain it. Measure and rehearse on the church’s actual connection, then lower the bitrate or resolution until the stream remains stable.
Start with a stable 720p30 setup
A clear, dependable service is more useful than a high-resolution stream that repeatedly drops. For a service dominated by speech and a largely stationary view, 720p30 is a practical starting format. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30; those figures describe YouTube’s encoder input, not the upload performance of any particular ISP or location. YouTube’s encoder settings
Use the recommended bitrate only if the connection can sustain it during a representative rehearsal. If it cannot, choose a lower rate and test again. A stable lower-resolution stream is generally preferable to a nominally sharper feed with dropped frames.
Prepare the YouTube channel and stream key
-
Check live-stream eligibility. Confirm the channel is eligible for live streaming and verified using YouTube’s live-streaming requirements. Do this before the service day rather than discovering an account restriction during setup.

Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with access may be able to send a stream to the channel. Do not show it on screen, share it in public chat, or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
Set OBS video, output and audio settings
Video format
In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set the base canvas to match your scene layout and set the output resolution to 1280 × 720 for a 720p stream. Set Common FPS Values to 30. A fixed pulpit or lectern view usually gains little from 60 fps, which can increase the amount of data to send.
Streaming output
Open Settings → Output and configure the streaming encoder for H.264, with rate control set to CBR. Set the video bitrate based on the connection you have measured and rehearsed; 8,000 Kbps is YouTube’s recommended H.264 input rate for 720p30, not a mandatory setting. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, and lists a maximum interval of four seconds. YouTube’s encoder guidance
Audio
Use AAC audio; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo. Make a test recording or private/unlisted rehearsal and listen from another device. Confirm speech is clear and not overwhelmed by room sound or music. A bitrate setting alone cannot establish whether the microphone, mixer, or room audio is intelligible.

Choose bitrate for the upload connection you actually have
Measure upload performance using the same computer and network that will stream the service. Prefer Ethernet between the streaming computer and router when possible. Advertised plan speed, download speed, or one short speed-test result does not prove the connection can sustain an upload to YouTube throughout a service.
| H.264 output | YouTube minimum listed | YouTube recommended | Practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 360p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps | Lowest-resolution option in the cited rows when capacity is very limited. |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | A middle option if 720p cannot be sustained. |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | Reasonable starting point for a mostly fixed service view. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Use only when rehearsal shows the connection can sustain it reliably. |
These are the H.264 values in YouTube’s current encoder table, accessed in 2026. The minimum is not a recommended target for a service image with movement; a lower bitrate may produce visibly degraded video. The full YouTube table also varies by frame rate and codec. For a straightforward setup that is easier to troubleshoot, H.264 is a sensible baseline. See YouTube’s full table
OBS Project suggests 75% of total upload speed as a diagnostic starting heuristic for stream bitrate. It is not a guarantee: congestion, bursts, packet loss, or the route to the ingest server can still cause instability. Use it as a cautious first estimate, then verify with an actual stream test. YouTube transcodes accepted live input for viewers, but viewer-side transcoding does not fix an unstable feed arriving from OBS. No India-specific OBS preset or measured Indian broadband performance is established here; the right setting is the one the church connection repeatedly sustains in rehearsal.
Rehearse the full service before relying on it
Test with the actual camera movement, scene changes, audio sources, and network you will use during worship. YouTube recommends a representative test and checking stream health. Watch the live preview from a second device and confirm that both the picture and spoken audio are usable. YouTube encoder settings
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help assess a starting configuration, but OBS cautions that meeting minimum compatibility requirements does not guarantee successful streaming. CPU load varies with encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Rehearse the actual scenes and sources rather than relying on a computer’s specifications alone. Fix dropped frames and disconnections
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That points first to the network path or upload capacity, not automatically to a defective OBS installation. OBS connection troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely area to check | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames in OBS | Upload capacity, Wi-Fi, router, cable, network driver, VPN, network-optimization software, or route to ingest | Lower bitrate, use Ethernet if possible, and test again. |
| Stream disconnects despite a good speed-test result | Connection instability, intermittent congestion, router or network-device issues | Run a longer representative stream test; check cables and network equipment. A brief speed test is not enough to establish sustained performance. |
| Video reaches YouTube but the stream looks poor | Bitrate may be too low for the resolution or amount of motion | Improve stability first; then raise bitrate only if the connection sustains it, or retain the lower setting for reliability. |
| Viewers cannot hear speech clearly | Microphone, mixer, room sound, or OBS audio routing/levels | Listen from a separate device during rehearsal and correct the audio chain before changing video bitrate. |
| Stream fails after a network interruption | Reconnect behavior or broadcast lifecycle settings | Rehearse a disconnect and confirm which scheduled or active broadcast OBS reconnects to. |
OBS says Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends wired connectivity where possible. Check the Ethernet cable, router/modem, and any network devices between the computer and the internet. Restarting a router is a basic diagnostic; persistent routing or congestion problems may require help from the ISP. OBS also offers a “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion” option. It may lower quality during congestion, but OBS warns that it does not fix the underlying cause; some network controls are Windows-only. OBS connection troubleshooting
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for long-running operation
A continuous church livestream is not a guarantee that OBS, the computer, the network, and YouTube will run unattended indefinitely. Schedule and auto-start/auto-stop choices affect broadcast behavior. OBS’s community walkthrough discusses reconnects and broadcasts eventually ending after a prolonged period without incoming video, but it does not establish a precise grace period or a permanent-running guarantee. OBS Forums YouTube guide
For a long stream, arrange human checks to confirm the program is still live, stream health is good, audio is present, and power and network equipment remain online. If unattended all-day operation is essential, test the actual computer, router, and connection recovery plan. A suitable UPS capacity, runtime, redundant ISP, or failover design depends on local equipment and conditions; there is no universal sizing or guarantee.
Church audio and copyright checks
Prioritize intelligible speech and a consistent audio feed over adding camera complexity. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports camera, microphone, and preamp sources, but that does not mean every church needs new equipment. Test the room’s actual audio chain from the remote viewer’s perspective.

Before broadcasting hymns, recordings, background music, or video clips, confirm that the church has the rights needed for live streaming and any later availability as a replay. A song or recording that can be used inside a building is not automatically cleared for an online broadcast. YouTube may detect copyrighted material, and rights or claims can affect a live stream or its replay. Review the relevant permissions and YouTube’s current rules for the channel and content; do not assume that attribution alone grants permission.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use OBS to stream a live camera-led church service continuously?
Yes, OBS can send a live camera and audio feed to YouTube, but the computer, power, and network remain part of the setup and need monitoring and recovery planning.
Does 8 Mbps mean my church needs an 8 Mbps broadband plan?
No. It is YouTube’s recommended H.264 input bitrate for 720p30. The connection must sustain the stream upload reliably, and the usable setting should be established by testing at the church.
