For a prerecorded church service, start with OBS set to H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo at 128 kbps, and 1080p30 only if the recording, computer, and sustained upload connection can handle it. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 or 8 Mbps at 720p30, and advises keeping 20% upload headroom. Those are starting points—not a universal preset. A scheduled service and an unattended 24/7 channel are different jobs, and OBS settings alone do not guarantee round-the-clock operation.
Choose a profile your source and connection can sustain
Base the output on the recording’s detail, the computer’s encoder capacity, and measured upload performance. A static pulpit shot may be less demanding than a service with frequent movement, but slides, fine text, and fast motion also affect the result. YouTube’s figures below are recommendations for H.264, not a measurement of your church’s internet connection.

YouTube recommends reserving 20% of upload bandwidth rather than using all measured capacity for the stream. Test the sustained connection in advance; a headline speed or brief speed test is not a guarantee of stable streaming. YouTube’s guidance warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Set OBS’s streaming output
In OBS, open Settings > Output and use Advanced output mode if you need to set streaming and recording separately. Labels can vary by OBS version and operating system; use the YouTube stream URL and key shown for your event in Live Control Room.

For 60 fps, consult YouTube’s settings for the chosen resolution and test the full encoding path; do not assume a 30 fps bitrate will be sufficient. OBS’s overview recommends testing in advance and notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps.
Prepare YouTube and load the service recording
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live event. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s YouTube streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send to your channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Load the prerecorded service into the OBS program feed, for example as a media source. Confirm that the video appears and its embedded audio is audible in the OBS audio mixer. Check that unintended microphone or desktop audio is not being added.
- For a one-off service, use the event’s selected auto-start and auto-stop behavior deliberately. The OBS feed and YouTube event have separate controls; confirm which one you need before the service begins.
- Start streaming from OBS ahead of the planned start. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the preview and inspect both picture and sound before starting the event.
- Monitor stream health and the program during the service. If you can connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet, a wired connection may remove one source of wireless instability, though it cannot fix every network fault.
- When the event is over, end it in YouTube and stop the encoder in the order appropriate to the event controls. If you made a local recording, confirm that it plays.
Before the actual service, rehearse with similar motion and audio. A static test screen will not reveal every issue that occurs with a moving video, slides, or speech.

Decide what “continuously” means for your channel
One scheduled service
For a single prerecorded service, a scheduled YouTube event and an OBS program feed containing the recording may be sufficient. Check the preview, monitor the stream, and plan how the event should start and end.
A repeating or 24/7 channel
A round-the-clock channel requires more than a good encoder profile: the computer, power, network, OBS, and video playback must keep working unattended. A single long YouTube stream also has archive implications: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous session will appear as one complete archive. Decide whether separate events, repeated programming, or archive continuity matters before choosing an operating plan. If viewers should be able to pause or rewind the live stream, check the event’s DVR setting in YouTube. DVR is a viewer control, separate from OBS’s resolution and bitrate settings; see YouTube live settings.
Protect a local recording separately
If you want a backup copy, configure OBS recording independently from streaming where practical. In Settings > Output, Advanced mode allows separate streaming and recording output settings. MKV is a sensible recording container: OBS says an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the whole file. If an MP4 is needed afterward, use OBS’s remuxing function. A separate high-quality recording configuration can increase computer load, so test streaming and recording together before the event. See OBS’s standard recording output guide.

Lossless recording is usually excessive for a routine service archive: OBS lists its lossless preset at around 7 GB per minute. That figure is an OBS estimate for the preset, not a prediction for every recording. See OBS recording encoder presets.

A recording being available to your church does not by itself establish that it can be rebroadcast live on YouTube. Confirm that your church has the necessary rights for every included element—such as music, performances, video clips, and readings—on the platform and in the format you plan to use. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if YouTube detects material you are not authorized to use. Retain permission records and review any claims or restrictions shown in YouTube Studio. Repeating a recording does not remove rights obligations.

Also make sure the stream represents programming your channel is permitted to publish and that its title and description accurately identify the service. A continuous schedule is an operating choice, not a substitute for following YouTube’s rules.
Troubleshoot the problems most likely to interrupt a service
