AWS Elemental Link is a physical contribution device: it sends a live production feed to AWS Elemental MediaLive, which ingests and transcodes it. It does not, by itself, create a complete viewer-facing streaming platform. Plan the destination, packaging or origin, content delivery network (CDN), and playback experience as part of the same workflow.

What AWS Elemental Link does—and what the platform still needs

In an AWS live workflow, Link connects an on-premises camera or production source to MediaLive over an AWS-managed secure connection. MediaLive processes the incoming feed and sends configured outputs downstream. A viewer-facing service usually also needs a destination such as an origin or packager, a CDN to distribute the stream, and a player on a website, app, or other playback device. AWS describes those as parts of the broader workflow in its MediaLive workflow and planning guidance.

Think of Link as one possible input, not as a streaming platform in a box. Link UHD may also be used with MediaConnect; the appropriate setup depends on the source and workflow. Link is not mandatory in every AWS design: AWS’s S3 reference architecture also describes RTP, RTMP, and HLS input paths.

Plan the viewer experience before creating a channel

Start at the audience end and work backward. Decide how viewers will receive and play the stream, then select the services and MediaLive outputs that support that experience. AWS recommends preparing upstream and downstream systems before creating the channel.

  1. Specify the playback target. Decide whether viewers will use a website, app, or another playback device, and determine the endpoint and streaming formats it needs.
  2. Choose the delivery path. Decide whether the design needs a packaging or origin service, a CDN, or both. Account for how the audience will reach the stream.
  3. Describe the production feed. Identify the source and the audio, video, captions, codecs, and output requirements your workflow must support. Use those requirements to select and configure the input and channel.
  4. Plan reliability and operations. Decide whether you need redundant source feeds, and check that every required service is available in the AWS Region you intend to use.
  5. Build the channel plan from outputs backward. Match MediaLive’s configured outputs to the downstream destination, then match the input to the production source.

This order reduces the risk of building a channel that accepts the feed but does not deliver it in a form the selected playback path can use.

Choose an input that fits the production setup

Use Elemental Link for a physical contribution path

When the source is on premises and the production workflow calls for Link, deploy and configure the device for the intended MediaLive workflow. Confirm the device and service conditions for the deployment before committing to a design; availability can change.

Consider a network input when Link is not the right fit

Link is only one option. AWS’s Live Streaming with Amazon S3 reference design lists RTP, RTMP, HLS, and Link input paths. Choose based on the actual production source and workflow requirements, rather than assuming that every AWS build needs Link hardware.

Match the MediaLive input and channel to the feed

MediaLive ingests and transcodes the source. Configure its input and channel to match the source and the outputs already planned. Resolve audio, video, captions, codec, and delivery requirements before finalizing the channel. The AWS guidance establishes this planning sequence, but the exact settings depend on the feed and chosen outputs; there is no single profile that fits every production.

Select a downstream architecture

AWS’s reference designs illustrate two different ways to deliver a MediaLive output. They are patterns to adapt, not universal deployment prescriptions.

Reference pattern Downstream path When to evaluate it
AWS Live Streaming solution Redundant input feeds go to MediaLive for adaptive-bitrate output; MediaPackage packages the outputs as HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints. Evaluate when the planned playback experience needs packaged endpoints and the workflow calls for redundant inputs.
Live Streaming with Amazon S3 MediaLive creates adaptive-bitrate HLS output, S3 hosts the encoded segments, and CloudFront distributes them. Evaluate when an S3-hosted HLS path fits the audience and playback requirements. Link is optional; the reference design also lists RTP, RTMP, and HLS inputs.

The right choice depends on the required playback formats, input, Region, audience, and operating model. Confirm the current prerequisites and service availability for the specific design, especially if using MediaConnect flows; AWS’s guide says the deployment must use the same Region as those flows.

Deploy and operate the workflow

AWS provides a CloudFormation-based Live Streaming solution with three progressive 30 fps encoding profile choices: HD-1080p, HD-720p, and SD-540p. The guide estimates deployment at approximately 20 minutes. Treat that as the template’s estimate, not a project schedule: prerequisites, regional availability, and the surrounding production and delivery setup affect the work involved. Review the current template and its requirements before deployment.

  1. Check the deployment prerequisites. Verify that the template, device, and required services are currently available in the selected Region. If the workflow uses MediaConnect flows, confirm the Region alignment required by the guide.
  2. Prepare upstream and downstream systems. Have the source workflow and viewer-facing delivery path planned before deploying or creating the channel.
  3. Select the appropriate profile. Choose among the solution’s HD-1080p, HD-720p, or SD-540p progressive 30 fps profiles based on the intended output. These are the template choices, not a claim that every source or use case should use one of them.
  4. Deploy and validate the complete path. Check that the input reaches MediaLive and that its configured output reaches the planned packaging or hosting destination and can be played through the chosen delivery path.
  5. Operate against the workflow’s needs. Monitor the source, channel, and downstream path together. Where continuity requirements call for it, plan redundancy explicitly; AWS’s Live Streaming reference architecture uses two input feeds.

Cost and design trade-offs

  • Encoding and packaging: Cost depends on the configuration and event duration.
  • Viewer delivery: Audience traffic and delivery volume can be a major cost driver. In AWS’s illustrative guide example, CloudFront distribution accounts for most of the estimated event cost.
  • Redundancy: Redundant feeds can address a different reliability need from simply having a working input; include them only when the workflow requires them.
  • Region and services: Check availability and current regional prices for the exact design. Recalculate using the actual bitrates, hours, and audience traffic rather than treating an example as a quote.

AWS’s guide gives an illustrative estimate of approximately $69.74 total for a one-hour event with about 1,000 viewers, an SD-540p profile, and the US East (N. Virginia) Region. The estimate assigns about $2.50 to encoding and packaging and $67.24 to CloudFront distribution. The guide’s publication year is not stated, so these figures are a configuration-specific example, not a current universal price or quote. Recheck current AWS prices and model the actual workflow before budgeting.

Troubleshoot by locating the failed part of the path

  • The source is not reaching MediaLive: Check that the selected input matches the production source and that Link, if used, is deployed and configured for this workflow. If Link is not the right input path, reassess whether a supported network input better matches the source.
  • MediaLive receives a feed, but the channel output is not usable: Compare the channel’s planned outputs with the destination and playback requirements. Revisit the required audio, video, captions, codecs, and output formats rather than changing settings without a target requirement.
  • The output exists, but viewers cannot play it: Trace the downstream path: packaging or hosting destination, CDN where used, endpoint, and player. Confirm that the selected architecture supplies the playback format and endpoint the viewer experience expects.
  • A deployment fails or a service is unavailable: Recheck the current template prerequisites and Region availability. For a workflow using MediaConnect flows, verify the Region requirement before deployment.
  • The stream is not resilient enough: Review whether the use case requires redundant source feeds. AWS’s Live Streaming reference pattern uses two; redundancy should be part of the design rather than assumed from Link alone.
  • The bill differs from an estimate: Recalculate against the selected Region, encoding setup and duration, packaging, actual bitrates, and viewer traffic. The one-hour AWS example is not a forecast for a different audience or configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or production feed, StreamNeo is a different, simpler option—not a replacement for Link and MediaLive in a live production workflow. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on.

  1. Upload your video or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud.

There is nothing to keep running at home; every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; and automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo or start the free day.

Choose the architecture that matches the production

For an on-premises camera or production feed, Link can provide the contribution path into MediaLive, but the platform is the full chain: source, channel, output destination, packaging or hosting where needed, CDN, and playback. Plan that chain from the viewer backward, then select the input and AWS reference pattern that fit the real workflow. For a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded recordings instead of a live production feed, StreamNeo serves a different use case.
