Start with one simple scene, test at 720p and 30 fps, and adjust based on OBS’s performance and YouTube’s stream health before relying on it.
Check the PC and connection before choosing settings
Find your operating system, CPU, RAM, graphics hardware, and whether OBS offers a hardware H.264 encoder. OBS’s minimum compatibility requirements do not promise that a system can stream successfully; CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a hardware-specific starting point. See the OBS System Requirements and Quick Start Guide.
- Open OBS Studio and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Choose the option for streaming, then follow its prompts for your intended use, hardware resources, and network conditions.
- Use the wizard’s output as a starting point, not a guarantee. Before making the stream public, run a private or unlisted test and monitor OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream health.
- Where practical, connect the PC to the router by Ethernet. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you must use Wi-Fi, test from the PC’s actual location and at different times.
A hardware encoder may reduce CPU encoding work if your system has one, but its quality at a given bitrate can differ from x264. The right choice depends on the particular PC; do not select an encoder based on the label “low-end” alone. OBS notes that each setup and use case differs in its x264 guide.
Build a minimal fireplace scene
For a basic loop, create one scene with the fireplace video source and only the audio you actually need. Avoid unnecessary browser overlays, multiple full-canvas media assets, and costly filters. OBS says sources can consume resources even when not visible, and browser sources and filters can be resource-intensive. Its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide explains how to reduce load.

Check that the video source is set to loop, then preview the scene long enough to catch playback or audio problems. If OBS shows encoding overload, rendering lag, or stuttering, simplify the scene first. Then reduce output resolution or frame rate. Moving from 60 fps to 30 fps reduces the work required each second. Lowering the base canvas resolution is a more disruptive last resort because scene elements may need repositioning and resizing.
Start with conservative stream settings
A practical test configuration for a relatively static fireplace scene is 1280×720 output at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Use stereo AAC audio if the scene includes audio. These are starting points, not settings guaranteed to work on every PC or network.

YouTube’s current H.264 recommendation for 720p at 30 fps is 8 Mbps. That is the platform’s recommendation, not a requirement to use 8 Mbps when your connection cannot sustain it. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point and reducing bitrate if the connection cannot maintain it. A lower bitrate can reduce image quality, so test the scene and connection together. See YouTube’s encoder settings and OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
OBS’s x264 article gives a separate 3,000–5,000 kbps starting range for 720p30 under its stated assumption of x264 veryfast and low-to-medium motion. It is not a universal bitrate prescription and should not be confused with YouTube’s 8 Mbps recommendation; the sources use different assumptions. Test the bitrate your connection can sustain and judge the resulting image.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to its servers. Leave YouTube’s resolution detection automatic unless you have a specific reason to set a custom stream resolution.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup for the broadcast and copy the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the server and stream key provided by YouTube. Labels may vary by OBS version and connection method.
- Apply the settings, return to the main OBS window, and start the stream for a controlled private or unlisted test. Confirm YouTube receives video and audio and reports a healthy stream before making a public broadcast.
- During the test, check OBS’s statistics for dropped frames and rendering or encoding lag, and watch YouTube’s stream health. If performance is poor, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than assuming the first configuration will hold.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during a broadcast. Availability and exact labels in YouTube Studio can change; use the current controls shown in your channel.

Tune the stream using what you observe
- Encoding or rendering overload: reduce scene complexity, output resolution, or frame rate. Try 30 fps if you were using 60 fps. A simpler scene can also help.
- Dropped frames or disconnections: reduce bitrate and test again. Check the router, modem, network drivers, and whether the problem occurs on the actual connection you will use. If it appears to be outside the PC or home network, contact your ISP.
- Unstable Wi-Fi: use Ethernet if practical. A cable can improve the connection between PC and router, but cannot fix insufficient or unstable internet service.
- Poor picture after lowering bitrate: compare a short test at the lower bitrate with the higher setting. Keep the highest setting that remains stable rather than exceeding the connection’s reliable capacity.
- Audio or loop errors: check the source’s loop behavior, audio routing, and levels in a controlled test before leaving the stream unattended.
Do not infer multi-day stability from a short test. The PC, internet connection, and household power arrangements are unknown, and no OBS setting can establish how a particular computer will behave thermally over days or whether the broadcast will remain uninterrupted.

A continuous live broadcast and a complete replay are different goals. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup. Read YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Local recording requires enough storage and adds work for the PC, so test recording alongside streaming and check the resulting file before depending on it. Do not assume that dividing a 24-hour broadcast into segments guarantees a complete archive or uninterrupted playback; verify current behavior in your channel if those outcomes matter.
OBS, YouTube, and the PC cannot compensate for a power cut or an unreliable connection. Test your actual household setup, including any power backup you choose; the appropriate backup runtime depends on local conditions and the equipment, and cannot be prescribed from the information available here.
Keep copyright and monetization expectations realistic
Use fireplace footage and audio that you created or have permission to use. Permission to use material and eligibility for YouTube monetization are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policies, updated July 15, 2025, say repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its “inauthentic content” policy and is ineligible under the existing policy; monetized content should be original and authentic. An endlessly repeated stock fireplace clip or music loop is not assured to qualify. YouTube assesses individual channels and content under its policies: YouTube channel monetization policies.
