Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To run a prerecorded video continuously on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create a YouTube live stream, launch and secure a Linux EC2 instance, install FFmpeg, then publish to YouTube’s ingest URL using RTMPS and your private stream key. Keep the process under supervision and monitor YouTube’s stream health: an EC2 instance can run continuously, but neither a reconnect option nor one server guarantees uninterrupted uptime.
What this setup does—and what you need first
FFmpeg reads a media source on your EC2 host and sends an encoded live feed to YouTube. For a prerecorded program, that may mean repeatedly playing a file or playlist. YouTube receives the feed through its ingest URL and stream key; it does not receive a direct upload of the recording.
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream, plus a stream created or scheduled in Live Control Room.
- A Linux EC2 instance with enough CPU, memory, disk and network capacity for the chosen source and encoding mode.
- FFmpeg installed from a maintained distribution package source or a verified build.
- An administration method for the instance and a plan for process supervision, logs, monitoring and AWS charges.
The appropriate EC2 size and bill depend on resolution, frame rate, whether FFmpeg re-encodes or only remuxes, the FFmpeg build, AWS region and sustained network transfer. There is no single instance size or cost established for every workload.
1. Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Verify that the channel is eligible before building the EC2 workflow.
- Copy the stream’s ingest URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup. YouTube describes the key as the credential that identifies the destination and allows the platform to accept the encoder feed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and stream-key guidance.
- Store the key as a secret, not in a public script, source repository, screenshot or log. Restrict access to the configuration that contains it. If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.
2. Launch and secure a Linux EC2 instance
Select a Linux AMI and instance based on the workload you intend to run; measure CPU and network headroom with the actual media and encoding settings rather than assuming a particular instance will suffice. AWS documents that the default SSH username depends on the AMI: Amazon Linux commonly uses ec2-user, while Ubuntu commonly uses ubuntu. Its described Linux configuration disables password authentication and root login by default; confirm the actual image and access configuration you launch.

Use a security group that permits only the inbound management access you need, from trusted source addresses where practical. AWS specifically cautions against allowing SSH from anywhere for production use. A host that publishes a feed outbound to YouTube does not need an inbound streaming port merely for that outbound connection. Review AWS security-group guidance and AWS connection prerequisites.
3. Install FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg using the maintained package source for the chosen Linux distribution, or use a build whose origin and codec support you have verified. Check the installed executable and its available codecs before relying on it:

AWS provides an Ubuntu EC2 and FFmpeg example, but that procedure is for private ingest to Amazon IVS, not a complete YouTube Live recipe. Use it only as a related example of installing FFmpeg on EC2; follow YouTube’s own destination and encoding requirements for this setup.
4. Choose an FFmpeg output that matches YouTube
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 and AV1 among supported options, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm that the selected codec and ingest configuration are supported for your stream. The detailed recommendations are on YouTube’s live encoder settings page.

Use a bitrate for the actual mode
Bitrate is not a universal FFmpeg constant: choose it for the target resolution, frame rate and codec, and make sure the EC2 host can sustain the upload. Examples from YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings are:
| Output mode | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not measured performance results. Other codecs and modes have different guidance; consult the settings page rather than transferring these numbers to them.

Decide whether to re-encode
If the source already matches the desired codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe behavior, remuxing may avoid a costly encode. If it does not, FFmpeg must re-encode to meet the output settings. These approaches have different CPU demands, and the available sources do not establish a universal EC2 size or a tested command line for either. Verify the source properties and test the output in YouTube before leaving it unattended.
Build the output command without exposing credentials
Use the ingest URL and key shown for your specific YouTube stream, and configure the output to use the chosen protocol, codec, CBR target and keyframe interval. Keep the key out of command histories, process listings visible to other users and logs. Avoid copying a command containing a real key into documentation or a public script. Exact FFmpeg options depend on the input, codec and whether you are transcoding; validate them against the installed build and YouTube’s current settings rather than treating a generic command as universally correct.

5. Test before running continuously
- Start with an unlisted or otherwise suitable test stream in Live Control Room.
- Start FFmpeg and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm that video appears, audio is present and motion plays correctly.
- Check for dropped frames, unstable ingest or encoding overload. Adjust bitrate or workload and repeat the test if the stream is unhealthy.
- Only move to the intended continuous stream after the actual source, output settings and host have behaved as expected.
YouTube recommends testing against actual upload capacity and monitoring stream health. A successful short test is useful, but does not prove that the host, network path or process will never fail.
6. Operate FFmpeg as a continuous service
Do not rely on an interactive SSH session as the production process manager. Configure the Linux service manager or another supervisor to start FFmpeg after the host boots and restart it when appropriate. The right unit file, restart policy and exact commands depend on the selected OS and operating practice; test the chosen configuration before depending on it.
- Capture enough logs to diagnose failures, but ensure the stream key is never printed.
- Monitor process health, YouTube stream health, CPU and network use, disk space and AWS charges.
- Set alerts for process exit or loss of the expected live feed, and decide who responds.
- Test recovery behavior deliberately. A restart can recover a stopped process, but cannot eliminate failures in the instance, region, network path or YouTube ingest.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the feed | Wrong ingest URL or stream key, wrong stream selected, or unsupported output configuration | Recheck the URL and key in the matching Live Control Room stream; verify protocol and encoding settings. Reset the key if it may have leaked. |
| Video arrives but YouTube reports poor health | Bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval or network capacity does not suit the selected mode | Compare output settings with YouTube’s guidance, confirm a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and test sustained capacity. |
| FFmpeg exits or the image freezes | Input read failure, resource pressure, process termination or host/network disruption | Inspect protected logs, check CPU, memory, disk and connectivity, then validate supervisor restart and alert behavior. |
| SSH access fails | Wrong AMI username, key/access configuration or security-group source rule | Check the AMI’s expected username (often ec2-user for Amazon Linux or ubuntu for Ubuntu), the instance access method and restricted inbound SSH rule. |
| Unexpectedly high operating cost | Continuous instance runtime, storage or network transfer differs from the estimate | Review current regional AWS rates and actual resource use before leaving the stream on. The cost depends on instance, region, storage and sustained transfer. |
Cost and operating trade-offs
Self-managing FFmpeg on EC2 gives you control over the host and encoding pipeline, but you also own instance sizing, security, process supervision, monitoring and recovery. Calculate the cost using current AWS pricing for the chosen region, instance, storage and sustained network transfer; no current total for this workload is established here. Compare that full operating burden with a managed service if avoiding server administration matters more than controlling the host.
