To enable automatic ad breaks on a monetized always-on YouTube stream, open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, choose Edit → Monetization, turn monetization on, then select Automatic and a frequency level. YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls, but an enabled break is only an opportunity to show an ad—not a guarantee that each viewer will see one.
Before you start
- Your channel must be monetized, and monetization must be enabled for the stream.
- To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue on long-form or live streams, accept the Watch Page Monetization Module in YouTube Studio’s Earn area. See YouTube’s monetization settings guidance.
- These instructions apply to live streams configured in Live Control Room, such as encoder or mobile streams. YouTube says its stream-settings instructions do not apply to webcam streams; see Manage live stream settings.
Turn on automatic mid-roll ads
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or select a scheduled stream under Manage.
- In Live Control Room, select Edit → Monetization.
- Set Monetization to On.
- In live ad settings, select Automatic, then choose Low, Medium, or High frequency.
The settings and choices are described in YouTube’s live monetization guide. These are controls, not a promise of a particular number of ad impressions.
Choose a break mode

The frequency options do not guarantee that an ad will run at each opportunity. YouTube’s guidance on how ads work on live streams explains that delivery depends on multiple factors, including viewer experience and advertiser values. Viewers who are not served an ad continue watching; viewers who see one return to the stream after it ends or they skip it.
What automatic mode does for viewers
YouTube says automatic mode limits ad disruption to channel members, temporarily pauses mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snoozes mid-rolls for everyone during high-engagement moments. These measures do not mean every viewer will receive the same ad experience or that an ad will be served every time.

YouTube also reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not turn on live automatic mid-roll ads. YouTube says this comparison was averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. It is an aggregate comparison, not a prediction or guarantee for an individual channel.
Delay ads during an important moment
If a documentary reaches a sensitive or especially engaging moment, use Delay ads in Live Control Room. YouTube says this delays automatic mid-roll ads for 10 minutes and displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. Manually placed mid-rolls can still display while the delay is on.

Set defaults for future live streams
Monetized channels without rights management can set mid-roll defaults for newly created live streams in Live Control Room’s channel-level settings. YouTube says its stated default is monetization On with Automatic: Medium; eligible creators can change it. Channels with rights management currently do not have channel-level settings.
