How to Set Up an OBS Playlist for a YouTube Live Retail Display

Use OBS's VLC Video source to loop a retail-display playlist to YouTube Live, with practical setup, testing, and continuity guidance.

To loop a retail-display playlist through OBS to YouTube Live, add a VLC Video source to your display scene, load the clips, confirm Loop Playlist is enabled, then connect OBS to an encoder stream in YouTube Studio using its stream URL and key. This creates a repeating playlist feeding a live encoder; it does not, by itself, guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but its guidance does not promise continuous multi-day operation for this setup.

Choose the right OBS source

Need Media Source VLC Video
Content One local media file A playlist of media files
Repeat setting Loop Loop Playlist
Dependency Built into OBS VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC
Best fit A single repeating promotional clip An ordered or shuffled retail-display playlist

For several clips, VLC Video is the relevant option: OBS describes it as allowing a playlist, unlike Media Source, which plays one file. VLC Video relies on VLC libraries, so install VLC if the source is unavailable. These controls and requirements are documented on the OBS Project Media Sources page, dated January 11, 2022.

Set up the playlist in OBS

  1. Prepare the clips. Put the display videos in a local folder OBS can access. Confirm the order, audio, and suitability for repeating. OBS documents support for common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.
  2. Install VLC and add the playlist source. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the display, use the Sources panel to add a VLC Video source, and add the media files to its playlist. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
  3. Check repeat and visibility. In the VLC Video source properties, verify Loop Playlist is on; OBS documents it as on by default. Turn shuffle off if the store needs a predictable sequence. Check that the source is visible in the scene so it remains part of the output.
  4. Fit and inspect the display. Size the source to the intended OBS canvas. Check legibility of prices, product names, and other small text, and inspect clip changes for black frames, awkward cuts, or unexpected audio. OBS does not specify a retail-display layout standard, so judge the result against the screen and viewing distance in the store.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube describes the URL and key as the information the encoder uses to send the feed and let YouTube accept it; treat the key as a credential and do not publish or share it.
  3. Start the encoder from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview before making the display public. Exact interface labels can change, so follow the current labels in your YouTube Studio account.

See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for connecting an encoder and locating the stream details.

Test picture, sound, and stream health

Test with movement and audio representative of the actual display, not just a static opening frame. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring stream health and messages. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, and CBR, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Choose bitrate in relation to reliable available upload bandwidth rather than assuming a particular connection can sustain it. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for its settings guidance; the consulted page does not state a publication year.

  • Check the screen at its actual display size and viewing distance before relying on small text.
  • Keep an operator plan for checking the computer, network, OBS, and YouTube stream while the display is meant to be live.

What “nonstop” means in this setup

The playlist loop repeats media while OBS is running and connected. It is not a recovery plan for a computer crash, network loss, OBS shutdown, or a YouTube stream ending. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archiving rule, not a promise that a stream will stay live past 12 hours or restart without interruption. The official instructions cited here do not establish a hardware specification or guarantee an unattended 24/7 OBS/VLC installation. Treat the display as a stream that needs operational monitoring, and test the actual store deployment before depending on it.

For reference, YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance can help when an encoder stream has problems; the consulted help pages do not establish a dedicated multi-day retail-display recovery procedure.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Check and fix
VLC Video is missing from OBS sources Install VLC, then verify its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
The playlist stops after one pass Open the source properties and verify Loop Playlist is enabled. Check that the source is still visible in the scene.
Clips play in an unexpected order Check shuffle. Turn it off for a fixed retail sequence.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Verify that OBS has the stream URL and key for the selected YouTube encoder stream. Keep the key private and replace it if it has been exposed.
Preview or stream health shows a problem Check YouTube’s messages, the encoder connection, and whether the available upload bandwidth can sustain the chosen bitrate. Retest with representative motion and audio.
The display goes offline after a long run Do not assume playlist looping restarts OBS or reconnects YouTube. Check the computer, network, encoder state, and Live Control Room, then resume and verify the public preview.
