You can run a YouTube Live encoder on an EC2 instance in India by launching Linux in Mumbai (ap-south-1) or Hyderabad (ap-south-2), configuring secure SSH access, and sending a tested RTMPS stream from an encoder such as FFmpeg. The instance must be sized for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec; AWS and YouTube guidance do not establish a guaranteed EC2 size, monthly cost, or uninterrupted-stream duration. Treat 24/7 as an operating goal that needs monitoring and recovery planning.
Before you launch: choose the region and streaming workload
AWS lists two India EC2 regions: Asia Pacific (Mumbai), ap-south-1, and Asia Pacific (Hyderabad), ap-south-2. Instance families and sizes vary by region and availability zone, so confirm that the type you want is offered where you plan to launch it. See the AWS region and Availability Zone list.
Choose between Mumbai and Hyderabad based on proximity to the people who will administer the instance, your network route and measured ingest stability, available instance types, current regional prices, and any data-residency needs. Neither region is established as inherently faster or more reliable for YouTube ingest; test from the region and instance you intend to use. AWS recommends considering network requirements and regional cost differences when choosing a region: EC2 regions and Availability Zones.
Decide what the instance will encode
Write down your target resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether the encoder will use CPU encoding or supported acceleration. A file loop that is already encoded may have different compute needs from live transcoding. No certified EC2 size for continuous YouTube encoding is established here. Use a candidate instance only as a test, then verify that it can sustain your actual encode and stream before relying on it.

EC2 network performance varies by instance type. AWS instance network specifications are not proof of end-to-end throughput to YouTube, so do not select a size from a network number alone. Check the current EC2 instance network bandwidth information, then test the specific workload.
Launch an India EC2 instance with restricted access
- Open the EC2 console and select a region. Use the region selector to choose Mumbai or Hyderabad. Confirm your intended instance type is available in the chosen region and Availability Zone.
- Start an instance launch. Choose a Linux AMI and a candidate compute type only after defining the encoder workload. Configure storage for the operating system, encoder, logs, and any local media needed by your workflow.
- Set the security group narrowly. Allow inbound SSH (TCP port 22) only from your current public IP address, rather than from all IPv4 addresses. AWS’s connection guide requires SSH access in the security group and the instance details and private key to connect: Connect to a Linux instance using SSH.
- Review the launch details and connect. Save the private key securely, note the public address or other connection method, and use the login procedure for the selected AMI. Do not share the private key or place it in a public repository.
- Update and prepare the system. Install security updates and the encoder package you intend to use. Configure persistent storage for media, encoder settings, and logs if these must survive an instance stop or replacement.
Set YouTube Live and encoder settings
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder configuration. Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, logs, and source repositories, and replace it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Choose RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Use the server URL YouTube supplies rather than assuming a fixed endpoint. See YouTube encoder settings for live streaming.
- Match the output to your target. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Its recommendations differ by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the current table on YouTube’s encoder settings page for other combinations.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. It supports up to 60 fps. Keep the encoder’s output settings aligned with the stream setup.
- Test before depending on the stream. Start the encoder and check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, audio, and stream health. Test the full media loop or live encode you intend to run, not just a brief connection.
The 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps values are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not measurements of EC2 throughput. Leave bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends 20% spare capacity and says to account for both primary and backup streams if you use them. Its advice is at encoder settings and streaming tips. Measure from your chosen instance and monitor actual stream health.

Make a 24/7 setup recoverable
A single instance and encoder can fail, and a live connection can drop. AWS and YouTube guidance cited here do not guarantee that an individual stream can remain live indefinitely. For a continuous channel, design for detection and recovery rather than assuming one launch is enough.
- Restart the encoder process: use a supervised service or equivalent process management so an encoder exit is detected and the process can be restarted. Validate that restart behavior does not produce an endless rapid-failure loop.
- Monitor stream health: check both the EC2 host and YouTube’s incoming-stream status. CPU or network load alone does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
- Persist what recovery needs: keep media, configuration, and logs on storage that remains available through the recovery path you choose. Protect stream keys as secrets when storing configuration.
- Plan for host failure: a backup encoder or instance can reduce recovery time, but adds operational complexity and compute/network costs. Test failover with YouTube before relying on it; YouTube recommends testing encoder failover in its streaming tips.
These are architecture decisions, not a complete high-availability recipe. Define an acceptable recovery time, test failures deliberately, and verify how YouTube handles the replacement encoder and stream key in your setup.

Estimate the ongoing AWS cost
On-Demand EC2 charges apply while an instance is running. AWS bills per second with a 60-second minimum for a running On-Demand instance; see EC2 On-Demand pricing. A 24/7 workload therefore needs a region- and instance-specific estimate rather than a short test-session calculation.
Include the instance, EBS storage, public IPv4 charges where applicable, and internet data transfer in your estimate. Rates and availability can change, and no complete current India monthly price is established here. Troubleshoot common failures
- SSH times out: confirm you selected the correct region and address, that the instance is running, and that its security group allows port 22 from your current IP. If your IP changed, update the rule narrowly rather than opening SSH to everyone.
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: check that the encoder uses the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, that the instance can make outbound connections, and that the encoder is actually running. Regenerate a key in YouTube if it may have been exposed.
- Stream health is poor or frames drop: check encoder CPU or acceleration load, actual outbound capacity, chosen codec and bitrate, and other traffic on the instance. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations do not guarantee that the EC2-to-YouTube route can sustain them; lower the output or test another instance/region if measurements show insufficient capacity.
- Stream disconnects and does not return: inspect encoder and system logs, verify the process supervisor is active, and check YouTube Live Control Room. Test restart and failover procedures rather than assuming the platform will restore the session automatically.
- Costs exceed the estimate: review runtime, storage, public IPv4 use, and data transfer against the selected region’s current pricing. A 24/7 instance accrues running-time charges even when the stream is temporarily idle.
