You can install OBS Studio on a Linode Linux virtual machine and send its output to YouTube Live, but installing OBS is only one part of an always-on setup. OBS on Linux needs a graphical environment, and the official guidance cited here does not provide a complete, verified recipe for keeping a remote desktop session and OBS running through disconnects and reboots. Treat persistence as a design and test requirement—not a feature guaranteed by creating a Linode.

What you are building—and what “always-on” requires

A Linode is a virtual machine running a Linux distribution that you choose and configure; it is not a managed OBS desktop. OBS runs in a graphical Linux session, encodes the selected video and audio, and sends the stream to YouTube Live. Akamai describes Linodes as virtual machines on its infrastructure (Akamai Linodes).

For the channel to stay live, more than the VM must keep running: the graphical session, OBS, the selected media or scene, the outbound connection, and YouTube’s live ingest must all remain healthy. OBS’s Linux requirements list OpenGL 3.3 and an X window system or Wayland; they also warn that meeting basic requirements does not guarantee the machine can stream or record (OBS system requirements). A bare SSH terminal is therefore not a complete OBS runtime.

The official materials cited here do not establish a supported, end-to-end configuration for a persistent remote GUI, virtual display, automatic OBS startup, or recovery after a process or host restart. The steps below cover documented provisioning and installation guidance, then identify the validation you must do before relying on the stream.

Decide whether a Linode fits your stream

A cloud VM can keep processing after your personal computer is turned off, but you take on Linux administration, remote graphical-session setup, security, monitoring, and a recurring host bill. An always-on local computer avoids remote desktop configuration but depends on your local power and internet connection. Choose based on your comfort maintaining the machine and the actual encoding workload—not on the assumption that any VM can handle any stream.

  • Match CPU or compatible hardware encoding to the scene, codec, resolution, and frame rate. OBS cautions that requirements vary with those choices.
  • Check outbound bandwidth and any applicable transfer terms. YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrate is not a bandwidth guarantee from Akamai.
  • Check region, availability, and price at provisioning time; Akamai says these vary. Its plan guide identifies Accelerated plans as intended for video processing and live streaming, but current availability and cost can change (Akamai compute plan guidance).
  • Consider GPU plans only if your encoding workload justifies them. Akamai lists GPU instances for video encoding, but that does not establish that a GPU is necessary for a simple OBS scene (Akamai GPU Linodes).

As a volatile reference, the Akamai plan page accessed on 2026-10-03 listed Accelerated plans starting at $280/month ($0.42/hour), with VPU availability temporarily full across all regions. Its GPU page listed RTX PRO 6000 starting at $1,665/month ($2.50/hour); model resources and regional availability differ. These are source-published figures, not a recommendation or a quote for your stream. Confirm current capacity and pricing before choosing a plan.

Create and secure the Linode

  1. In Akamai Cloud Manager, the CLI, or the API, create a compute instance with a supported Linux distribution and a region appropriate for your operations and expected viewers. Akamai offers multiple distributions and plan types; availability varies by region (Linodes).
  2. Choose resources only after estimating the workload. A static image with audio is not the same encoding load as high-motion video at a high resolution and frame rate. No particular standard plan is established as sufficient for every OBS stream.
  3. Configure SSH access and firewall rules deliberately. Follow Akamai’s security guidance for system updates, a limited user, SSH hardening, and a local firewall. Avoid routine administration as root: Akamai notes that root has unlimited privileges (Set up and secure a Linode).
  4. Keep remote desktop access restricted and protected. Do not expose SSH or desktop services broadly without access controls.

Provide a graphical Linux session, then install OBS

OBS’s Linux requirements call for OpenGL 3.3 and X11 or Wayland. Plan a graphical environment that meets those requirements before treating OBS as usable. The official sources cited here do not specify which remote desktop, virtual display, or persistence configuration to use on a headless VM, so verify that design for your distribution and OBS version rather than assuming an SSH-only setup is sufficient.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live and choose encoder settings

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the live stream and obtain its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the key using the connection method shown in your current OBS and YouTube interfaces. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
  2. Choose RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS and describes RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP (YouTube encoder settings).
  3. In OBS output settings, use constant bitrate (CBR), set a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, and do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube’s current guidance supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps. Use its table for the exact codec and output profile you select.
  4. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate as a matched output profile. For H.264, YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026 recommends 6 Mbps for 720p/30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p/60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps. These are recommended encoder bitrates, not guaranteed VM network capacity.
  5. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 surround it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps, supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. Check YouTube’s current table for the chosen output mode.

Leave outbound headroom above the video bitrate for audio and network variation. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health; a speed test alone does not prove the route to YouTube ingest will remain stable.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Confirm video, audio, resolution, frame rate, and stream health while the graphical session and OBS are open.
  • Disconnect your SSH client and verify that the graphical session and stream continue. This checks session persistence, not recovery after a reboot.
  • Reboot the Linode during a planned test and verify what starts automatically, whether OBS opens in the required graphical session, and whether the stream resumes. Do not assume this behavior without observing it.
  • Simulate or observe a network interruption and confirm whether OBS reconnects and YouTube receives the stream again. Check the control room rather than relying only on an OBS status indicator.
  • Repeat with the actual scene, media, and intended output profile. Monitor encoder load and dropped frames; success with a static test image does not establish capacity for a more demanding scene.

Troubleshooting an OBS-on-Linode stream

  • OBS does not open or shows a display/graphics error: confirm the graphical session is running and that the environment provides the required OpenGL 3.3 support and X11 or Wayland. SSH alone is not the graphical runtime.
  • OBS opens but encoding overloads or frames lag: reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or choose a suitable encoder and compute plan. Re-test the real workload; the documented minimum requirements do not guarantee streaming capacity.
  • YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames: check outbound network stability, available headroom, and whether the configured bitrate fits the VM’s actual route. Compare OBS output settings with YouTube’s guidance and monitor stream-health messages.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: check that the correct YouTube Live Control Room stream is active, that OBS is pointed at YouTube, and that the stream key is current and entered accurately. Regenerate a compromised key and update OBS.
  • The stream stops after SSH disconnect or reboot: the remote session or OBS process is not persisting or restarting as required. Revisit the graphical-session and process-supervision design, then repeat disconnect and reboot tests before relying on it.
  • The stream does not recover after a connection drop: inspect OBS’s connection status and YouTube’s control room, restore the network path, and determine whether manual restart is required. Automatic recovery must be demonstrated in your own configuration.

Copyright and YouTube live rules still apply

Running OBS on a cloud server does not change the rights or platform rules for what you broadcast. Use video, music, and other material you own or are authorized to stream; check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before scheduling continuous playback. A successful connection or an initially healthy stream does not establish that content is cleared or eligible to remain live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on a YouTube channel rather than maintain an OBS desktop, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service made by Yorker Media. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops uploaded video; it does not broadcast from a camera. Your computer can be off, it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
