You can keep a YouTube channel continuously live by sending a prerecorded, rights-cleared playlist through an encoder to a YouTube live event—or by using a cloud service to play uploaded videos. The harder part is not making the feed loop: it is confirming that every run is still a verified record in its specific game category and that you have permission to rebroadcast it. A public leaderboard entry does not grant video rights.
Plan the stream before you create it
Treat this as two separate jobs: maintaining a healthy encoder feed to YouTube, and curating a playlist whose records, video rights, and game-content rights are all in order. A 24/7 channel can fail at either job. YouTube’s live-broadcast object may remain active even after its incoming video stream has stopped, so an event that still appears live is not proof that viewers are receiving the intended footage.
Choose what the channel will mean by “world record”
A run is not simply a record for an entire game. It belongs to a particular leaderboard category and may depend on platform, game version, timing rules, glitches allowed, or other category-specific conditions. Speedrun.com describes its leaderboards as community-owned and moderator-curated. Before calling a run a world record, check the current game and category page and its rules, rather than relying on an old video title or a general search result.
Decide how the feed will be operated
- Local encoder: A computer plays your permitted video playlist and sends it to YouTube. It gives you direct control, but the computer, encoder, power, internet connection, and recovery process all matter to continuity.
- Cloud playback: A service plays uploaded videos and sends the feed from its infrastructure. This avoids keeping a computer and home connection running, but it does not remove your responsibility to clear video, game, and music rights or keep the record list current.
Check rights before collecting or scheduling runs
Do not download, copy, edit, or rebroadcast a runner’s video just because it is publicly viewable or linked from a leaderboard. Speedrun.com’s moderation rules prohibit copying or reuploading a player’s video without permission, and its terms restrict unauthorized copying, archiving, scraping, and commercial use of its service and content. A leaderboard or API entry is not a license to use the linked video, gameplay footage, music, or Speedrun.com material.

Get permission that covers the actual broadcast
Ask the runner for explicit permission and keep a record of it. Make clear whether you will rebroadcast the video live, edit or loop it, attribute the runner, monetize the channel, how long the permission lasts, and how the runner can request removal. Respect a request not to list a run or username; Speedrun.com’s moderation rules allow appropriate anonymous representation of a top time without a linked video.
Separately consider rights in the game and any music or other third-party material. The available guidance does not establish that gameplay rebroadcast is automatically permitted for every game, publisher, territory, or soundtrack. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace a stream with a placeholder, warn the operator, interrupt it temporarily, or terminate it. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Where applicable, arrange rights-holder allowlisting as well as obtaining the permissions you need.

Keep a record of the basis for every playlist item
Speedrun.com notes that evidence standards vary by game board: video or photo evidence is common, but not universal. The board can configure video and verification requirements, so check the selected game’s current rules and moderator guidance rather than assuming a platform-wide default. A record can be verified under a board’s rules without its video being licensed for your broadcast.
- Game, category, platform, and version where applicable
- Runner’s name or the anonymous label they requested
- Time, leaderboard link, verification state, and date you checked the listing
- Source video and the permission basis for rebroadcasting it
- Any relevant game, publisher, music, or other rights clearance
Recheck the leaderboard periodically. If a run is surpassed, removed, or its verification changes, update the playlist and any on-screen description that calls it a record. Keep local copies of original source material only where you have permission to keep them. Speedrun.com recommends local recording because stream connections can drop and hosted videos can be muted, lost, or broken; that recommendation is about preserving run evidence, not permission to archive someone else’s video.

How do I set up a 24/7 YouTube livestream?
The following is a do-it-yourself workflow using a computer and an encoder such as OBS. OBS is one option, not a required product; the reviewed guidance does not establish minimum computer specifications. A capture card is relevant if you are capturing a separate live console source, but it is not necessary just to play prerecorded runs you are authorized to use.
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Live streaming also has age and account requirements; check YouTube’s current Help guidance before scheduling because platform requirements can change.
- Prepare the permitted media. Put the approved run videos in a stable local folder or playlist. Test each file from beginning to end, confirm that its audio is acceptable, and ensure the playlist contains only material you are authorized to broadcast. Keep a separate metadata list for the record details and permissions; a media playlist alone does not preserve those facts.
- Create a YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, use the live-streaming workflow to create or schedule a live event and choose an encoder connection. YouTube’s Live Streaming API treats the broadcast and the incoming stream as separate resources, with distinct scheduling, linking, and state transitions; use the Studio event controls for a normal manual setup. Do not assume creating the event starts a healthy feed.
- Connect the encoder to the event. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, obtain the stream key and enter it in the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in a public overlay, screenshot, or shared document. Select the YouTube ingestion option that uses RTMPS when available, then confirm the encoder is connected to the intended event before starting the broadcast.
- Configure output to match your source and connection. Use a supported video codec—YouTube’s settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1—and AAC or MP3 audio. Set constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends that keyframes not exceed four seconds. Choose resolution and frame rate that your encoder and sustained upload connection can actually maintain.
- Test before committing to continuous playback. Run a private or unlisted test if appropriate, check that the video is not stretched or cropped, listen for audio problems, and watch representative high-motion gameplay for dropped frames or stutter. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the event, not just the encoder’s local preview.
- Start the event and verify playback externally. Start the encoder feed and follow YouTube Studio’s status. Open the viewer-facing live page on a separate device or browser session and verify that it shows the correct run, sound, and live state. The broadcast can remain present when the incoming video stops, so check the actual picture and audio rather than relying only on the event being listed as live.
- Plan who responds to an outage. Decide how an operator will detect a stalled feed, restart the encoder, switch to a backup permitted video, or reconnect to the same live event. Document where the current stream key is stored securely and who can access it. If you cannot monitor continuously, arrange an operating method with recovery appropriate to your setup rather than treating a scheduled broadcast as self-healing.
Encoder targets to use as starting points
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates on its encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. They are recommendations, not guarantees of the upload speed or computer performance your setup needs; leave capacity for connection variation and overhead, and test your actual feed.

| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
If the connection cannot sustain the chosen output, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and retest. Do not select a high setting simply because the source recording has that resolution: stable delivery is more useful than a nominally sharper stream that repeatedly buffers or drops frames.

Monitor both sides of the connection
Check the encoder for playback or output errors and YouTube Studio for stream-health warnings. Also check the viewer-facing stream: an encoder can report that it is sending while the wrong file, silence, a frozen frame, or a blank scene is reaching viewers. For a 24/7 schedule, identify who will act on an alert and what they are allowed to switch to.

Common problems and fixes
- The event is listed as live, but the picture is frozen or missing: The broadcast may still exist while its incoming stream has stopped. Check encoder output, connection, and Studio stream health; restart or reconnect the feed, then verify the viewer-facing page.
- Video stutters or drops frames: The encoder or upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate and frame rate. Lower the output target, check the sustained connection under actual operating conditions, and test again.
- YouTube reports a content match or interrupts the feed: Review the matched material and rights status. A runner’s permission alone may not cover game or music rights; licensed third-party content may also require the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID.
- The stream key no longer connects: Recheck that the encoder is using the key associated with the intended live event and that the key has not been reset. Enter it privately in the encoder; never expose it publicly.
- A run is no longer the current record: Recheck the relevant game category, verification status, and rules, then replace the item or update the on-screen labeling. Avoid a broad “world record” claim when the category or platform is not specified.
- A hosted source video disappears or becomes unusable: Use a replacement only if you have permission to broadcast it. Keeping a local archive can help preserve material where allowed, but does not make unauthorized copying acceptable.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. For this use case, you still need to upload only footage you are permitted to rebroadcast and keep the record list accurate.
Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain on. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers; it also includes looping and playlists, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, support, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). The Monthly price is $9.99 per month.

Estimate the operating cost and workload
A local setup uses your own computer and connection continuously, so consider power, internet service, maintenance, and the time someone will spend checking and recovering the feed. The exact cost depends on your equipment and local rates; the cited guidance does not establish a universal hardware requirement or a best computer configuration. A cloud option trades that hands-on infrastructure for a service charge. Compare the operational burden as well as the price, and do not buy a router, modem, storage device, or capture card unless your particular workflow needs it.
Whichever method you use, the ongoing editorial work remains: rechecking category standings, honoring permissions and removal requests, watching for rights issues, and correcting outdated “record” labels. A running encoder cannot perform that curation for you.
