You can keep a prerecorded podcast live on YouTube from a desktop by sending it through YouTube Live Control Room and an encoder such as OBS. Verify that your channel can live stream, add YouTube’s stream URL and key to the encoder, preview the feed, then start the broadcast. For an unattended setup, plan for the PC and internet connection to stay available; a cloud option can keep the stream running without leaving a home computer on.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days; creators must be at least 16. Check access in YouTube Studio before building the setup. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
- A desktop PC capable of playing the podcast and sending an encoder feed. You can use an existing computer; expensive equipment is not necessary to get started.
- Encoder software such as OBS, which YouTube names among encoder options, plus your podcast video or audio-and-image scene.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the bitrate you choose. Shared household use can reduce the capacity available to the stream.
- Permission to broadcast and archive every element in the program, including music, clips, and third-party material.
Set up the YouTube stream and desktop encoder
- Confirm live access. Sign in to YouTube Studio and check that live streaming is available for the channel. If it is not, resolve the eligibility or restriction issue before scheduling a broadcast.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this process.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream settings, copy the server/stream URL and stream key. In OBS, choose YouTube if the integration is available, or enter the URL in the server field and the key in the stream-key field. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP; see YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or show it on screen. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings. See Manage live stream settings.
- Configure the podcast scene and output. Add the video or other program sources in OBS and select a resolution and bitrate your PC and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings page lists supported settings and bitrate guidance; do not assume that a high-resolution setting is safe merely because the source file supports it.
- Send a test feed and preview it. Start streaming from the encoder while the YouTube event is in preview. Confirm that the image moves, the audio is present and correctly balanced, and the stream health indicator is satisfactory. Check the event on its watch page and on a phone before relying on it.
- Start the broadcast in Live Control Room. When the preview is ready, use YouTube’s Go Live control. For scheduled events, YouTube advises starting the encoder ahead of time and checking the local archive file if you are recording one; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
Choose settings and test your connection
Resolution and bitrate
Set the encoder output to a resolution and bitrate that suit both the source and the available upload bandwidth. The total outgoing stream bitrate needs to fit within upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom, so test using the actual output settings and a connection that reflects normal household use. Check upload speed rather than relying on download speed. The encoder settings page provides YouTube’s setting recommendations.
Network and power continuity
A dependable connection matters more than peak speed alone: YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Ethernet can be a practical choice if the desktop can connect to the router, but it is not a YouTube requirement. Test the setup at the location and time you intend to run it, including other devices using the same connection.
A UPS for the desktop and networking equipment may bridge some power interruptions, but the runtime depends on the actual load, battery and local outage pattern. Size it for the devices you need to keep running; no universal capacity or runtime can be assumed. Indian ISP upload performance, data limits, power reliability and suitable UPS sizing vary by provider, location and equipment.

Plan for long broadcasts and replay archives
Always-on viewing and a complete replay are separate requirements. YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that a longer continuous broadcast will be preserved as one complete replay. If you need a full archive, plan local recording or segmentation and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on a single uninterrupted recording. For a very long program, decide in advance whether one persistent live event or planned shorter segments better fit your audience and archive needs. Test the chosen workflow before the broadcast; do not assume that an uninterrupted stream guarantees an uninterrupted replay.

Use content you have the right to broadcast
YouTube’s livestream terms say creators represent that they hold the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live and archived content, including music licensing rights. Check rights for the podcast itself and for any music, clips, artwork or other third-party material included in the stream. A live broadcast can create copyright issues even if the same material is later removed from the replay. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and its guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions.
Monetization is not automatic
For eligible channels, YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live-stream revenue features. Eligibility and feature availability depend on the channel, and an ad is not guaranteed to run in every slot. Continuous streaming by itself does not assure monetization or revenue. Troubleshoot common problems
