You can keep a YouTube live stream running while your personal computer is off by running FFmpeg on an always-on virtual private server (VPS). FFmpeg reads a media file in real time and sends it to YouTube Live over RTMPS; YouTube then delivers the broadcast to viewers. To make the setup resilient, supervise the encoder process, check YouTube’s stream health, and plan how you will respond to a failed connection. A running process alone does not prove that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
What runs on the VPS—and what runs on YouTube
The VPS hosts Linux, your media files, FFmpeg and a process supervisor. FFmpeg encodes or packages the media and pushes a contribution stream to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube is still the viewer-facing platform; the VPS is not a replacement for YouTube Live. YouTube’s Live API describes ingest addresses and stream resources, while FFmpeg documents real-time file streaming. Those documents do not certify the performance of any VPS provider. Prepare YouTube Live and protect your stream key
- Create or configure the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and set up the live stream or scheduled event you intend to use. Follow the current on-screen setup for the event and its visibility.
- Copy the current ingest details. Get the server/ingest URL and stream key shown for that setup. Do not rely on a hard-coded universal endpoint: YouTube provides ingestion information, and the valid endpoint and path matter. The Live API documents primary and optional backup ingest addresses. YouTube LiveStreams resource
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a credential. Do not place a real key in a public command, screenshot, source repository or shared log. Avoid putting it in shell history; use a private configuration or secret-handling method appropriate to your server.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. RTMPS encrypts the connection; YouTube’s guidance specifies port 443, TLS and the expected server hostname for SNI authentication. Use the ingest URL YouTube supplies, and confirm FFmpeg on your server supports RTMPS before relying on it. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide · FFmpeg protocol documentation
Choose resolution, codec and bitrate for sustained operation
Choose a configuration the VPS can encode continuously and whose required upload bitrate fits the server’s available outbound capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. RTMPS is the usual starting point for a straightforward live stream. YouTube encoder settings

| H.264 example | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not VPS specifications or guarantees. The right bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, codec and available upload capacity; allow network headroom and test sustained encoding on the server you choose. The cited guidance does not establish a universal CPU, RAM, storage, bandwidth allowance, price or reliability requirement for a given stream. Do not infer a VPS size from bitrate alone. When another ingest protocol may make sense
RTMPS is the practical default for a typical low-latency setup. YouTube’s protocol comparison also covers HLS and DASH, which support additional codec options but deliver media in segments and generally have higher latency. Consider those alternatives only if their codec or delivery characteristics suit your use case; check YouTube’s current comparison and the ingest options available to your broadcast. Install FFmpeg and send a real-time file stream
Install FFmpeg using the package or build appropriate for your Linux distribution, then check the installed build’s protocol support rather than assuming every package includes the same features. FFmpeg’s documented real-time file pattern uses -re to read at the input’s native rate and the FLV muxer for an RTMP-family destination. Its example is:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream
For YouTube, adapt that pattern to the current RTMPS ingest URL and key from Live Control Room. The following is a structural example only: replace the placeholders with your actual media file and YouTube-provided ingest details, and do not publish or share the real key.

ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_HOST/INGEST_PATH/STREAM_KEY"
Stream copying with -c:v copy -c:a copy avoids re-encoding only when the input’s codecs and parameters are compatible with the destination and container. If the media is incompatible, configure encoding explicitly to match YouTube’s supported settings and the capacity of your VPS; do not assume copying will work for every file. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the RTMPS URL scheme and that the endpoint uses the supplied path and expected hostname. FFmpeg documents the real-time input and FLV pattern and the RTMP protocol family, but the installed build’s capabilities can vary. FFmpeg formats documentation · FFmpeg protocol documentation
Keep FFmpeg running after a reboot or process exit
For a 24/7 setup, run FFmpeg under a service supervisor such as systemd. Configure the service to start at boot and restart after an unexpected process exit, and arrange private handling for the stream key. This is an operational pattern—not a YouTube requirement, an official YouTube service unit or a guarantee that the broadcast will never drop. A supervisor can restart a failed local process; it cannot by itself prove that YouTube accepted the stream or that viewers have a healthy broadcast.

- Make sure the media file and any configuration are available to the service account when the server starts.
- Check the service’s logs and exit status after deployment and after a reboot.
- Decide how to notice a missing broadcast and how you will investigate repeated restarts or a dropped connection.
- If you use a backup ingest address, configure it only according to the current YouTube setup and your encoder’s capabilities.
Test and monitor the broadcast
Test before making the stream public, using audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast. During operation, compare YouTube’s stream health and messages with FFmpeg logs and the process state. YouTube’s health reporting can identify issues such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch and missing audio; an FFmpeg process that is alive is not enough to establish that the broadcast is healthy. YouTube encoder settings and testing guidance · YouTube LiveStreams resource
- Verify that the broadcast appears in Live Control Room and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
- Confirm that sound is present and that the picture has motion, rather than checking only a static or silent test.
- After configuring the service, reboot the VPS and verify that the process starts as expected and the broadcast is received.
- Test your recovery procedure for a dropped connection, then confirm the YouTube event remains configured as intended.
- Monitor platform-side stream health as well as local service state, and arrange an alert if the stream disappears.
Troubleshoot common VPS stream failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and corrective action |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits immediately or cannot open the output | Check the ingest URL, path and key against the current YouTube setup; inspect FFmpeg’s error output and confirm the installed build supports the RTMPS protocol. Keep the key private while investigating. |
| FFmpeg runs, but YouTube does not show a healthy incoming stream | Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages, then compare them with FFmpeg logs. Confirm the URL and key, and verify that the service is sending to the intended event. |
| Low-bitrate warnings or an unstable feed | Check the configured bitrate and sustained outbound capacity. YouTube’s example bitrates are recommendations, not a promise that a particular VPS network can maintain them; reduce the output demand or use infrastructure with sufficient tested capacity. |
| Frame-rate mismatch | Compare the actual output frame rate with the configured stream settings and YouTube’s health message. Correct the encoder configuration and test again. |
| Missing audio | Verify that the input contains an audio stream, that FFmpeg maps and sends it, and that YouTube’s health status recognizes audio. Test with audible material before relying on the loop. |
| Service restarts but the broadcast stays down | Inspect the restart loop and FFmpeg logs, then separately confirm YouTube-side health. A local restart policy does not establish that the connection recovered or that YouTube is receiving the stream. |
YouTube’s API health information reports status and detected configuration issues; use it alongside local process and log checks, not as a substitute for them. YouTube LiveStreams resource

Copyright and YouTube eligibility still matter
Running a 24/7 loop from a VPS does not establish that the material is permitted, eligible for monetization or exempt from YouTube’s rules. Make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the video and audio, and check YouTube’s current policies for live content, copyright and monetization before broadcasting. Continuous availability is a technical outcome, not a content-rights determination.
