Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYou can keep a YouTube livestream running from a spare PC by enabling livestreaming for your channel, creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, and sending it from software such as OBS. The computer, encoder, power, internet connection and video source must keep working for the broadcast to continue; this setup does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime. Follow the steps below, test the actual machine and connection, and plan separately for long-stream archives.
Check that your YouTube channel can livestream
Before installing or configuring anything, sign in to the channel that will host the broadcast and open YouTube Studio’s Go Live area. Confirm that livestreaming is enabled. YouTube’s current general eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and says livestreamers must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this well before your planned start.
YouTube currently lists limits of 10 concurrent active streams per channel and three per stream key. These are simultaneous-stream limits, not a promise of unlimited stream creation. Check YouTube’s live streaming eligibility and getting-started guidance for current requirements.
Set up the spare PC and encoder
Choose an encoder and video source
Install OBS Studio or another encoder on the spare PC. An encoder takes a video and audio source, compresses it into a stream, and sends it to YouTube. YouTube describes encoder workflows as suitable for productions such as screen sharing, gameplay and external audio/video inputs. For a documentary-style channel, decide what the PC will send: a continuously playing video, a playlist or another appropriate source. Make sure you have the rights to broadcast the material.

The official guidance does not establish a minimum CPU or GPU for this specific continuous-streaming workload. A computer that can encode a short test may still struggle over a long run, particularly at higher resolutions or frame rates. Test the exact source and settings you intend to use rather than assuming the spare PC is powerful enough.
Keep the machine able to run
A local 24/7 broadcast depends on the PC staying powered on, the encoder continuing to run, and the network connection remaining usable. Review the PC’s power and sleep settings so it does not shut down or sleep during the broadcast, and check that updates or restarts will not interrupt a scheduled run. If practical, an Ethernet cable may be worth trying when the PC and router have compatible ports and you can route a cable safely. It is optional, and it cannot fix an unreliable internet service or a congested network.

Create the broadcast and connect OBS to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Go Live. In the Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling can help you promote the broadcast and let viewers set reminders.
- Find the stream URL and key. YouTube Studio provides the server URL and stream key for the encoder workflow. In OBS, choose YouTube as the destination if available, or enter the URL and key in the stream settings.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in a screenshot, publish it in notes or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Set the output and source. Select the resolution, frame rate, video source and audio source you intend to broadcast. Choose settings the PC can encode continuously and the tested upload connection can sustain.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the intended picture and sound appear in the Live Control Room. Start the broadcast using the workflow shown there, then keep an eye on stream health and the encoder while it runs.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating or scheduling an encoder stream and using its URL and key.
Choose stable resolution, bitrate and keyframe settings
Start with a quality level that leaves headroom on both the encoder and the internet connection. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and running a test with representative movement and audio. Its current H.264 recommendations include the following bitrate examples:

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | A lower-bandwidth starting point than 1080p60, but still test the real source and connection. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | Suitable as a recommendation for 30 fps output; check that the PC can encode it reliably. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | Requires more sustained upload capacity and encoding work than 1080p30. |
These are YouTube’s recommended settings, not a guarantee that a stream will work: actual stability depends on the sustained upload connection and encoder capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guide recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Follow the selected encoder’s labels when entering these values, since menu names can vary by software version. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended
- Use the intended video and audio sources, including scenes with movement and typical sound. A static screen alone does not test the same workload as the real programme.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using the final resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- Watch OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame count during the test. OBS says increasing dropped frames with a yellow or red connection indicator can point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.
- If the test is unstable, reduce the bitrate or output demands and test again. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help establish basic settings, but verify the result with your actual source and connection.
- Only leave the system running after it has behaved reliably during a representative test. Continue to monitor it when possible; a local encoder is not a set-and-forget uptime guarantee.
OBS’s Help Portal explains dropped frames and connection issues. Its connection to the streaming service is direct, so troubleshooting may need to address the PC, local network, internet connection or chosen bitrate.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit and content rules
Decide whether one long stream or shorter sessions fit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise the same archive behavior for broadcasts longer than 12 hours, so do not rely on a complete YouTube replay for a longer uninterrupted stream. If preserving a replay matters, consider splitting the schedule into shorter sessions or making a separate local recording, and verify that your recording setup has enough storage.
Use material you are allowed to broadcast
Having a video file does not by itself establish permission to livestream it. Check that you have the necessary rights for the footage, music, narration and other included material, and review YouTube’s current rules before broadcasting. Copyright claims, restrictions or other channel enforcement can affect the stream. For an always-on channel, build a rights check into the playlist workflow rather than checking only the first video.

Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a livestream: confirm you are using the intended channel, that it is verified and enabled for livestreaming, and that it has no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder: check the selected destination, server URL and stream key in the encoder against the values shown in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private and replace it if it may have been exposed.
- Dropped frames or a warning connection indicator: check whether the upload connection is fluctuating or the configured bitrate is too high. Lower output demands and repeat a representative test; a cable may help only if the issue is the local wireless link.
- The stream is choppy or the PC struggles: the selected resolution or frame rate may exceed what the actual PC can encode continuously. Try a less demanding setting and monitor the encoder during a test.
- The broadcast ends or disappears: inspect power and sleep behavior, internet continuity, encoder status and YouTube stream health. A spare-PC workflow relies on all of these staying available.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: check how long the uninterrupted broadcast ran. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not establish that a longer stream will be archived in full.
Or let it run in the cloud
