How to Set Up an Always-On YouTube Channel with a Rotating Playlist on a ₹2,000 Monthly VPS

A Linux VPS can stream a playlist to YouTube while your home computer is off—but the ₹2,000 budget must cover more than the instance. Here’s how to configure, test and cost the setup.

Yes: a Linux VPS can keep a pre-recorded playlist streaming to YouTube Live while your home computer is off. The server runs the encoder, stores the media and sends the stream; your channel still needs live-stream access, the files must be compatible and rights-cleared, and the VPS must sustain the encoder and outbound traffic. Treat ₹2,000 a month as a budget to verify against a provider’s full regional bill—not as proof that a suitable VPS is available at that price.

What runs on the VPS—and what still needs to work

The VPS replaces the computer at home; it does not remove the moving parts. The server needs your playlist files, an encoder such as FFmpeg, the YouTube ingest address and stream key, enough CPU for encoding, and a stable outbound connection. A supervisor should bring the encoder back after a reboot or process failure. YouTube receives a live video feed, not a playlist it can independently keep playing if your server stops.

This guide uses FFmpeg on Linux for a fixed, ordered playlist. It assumes you can access a Linux shell, install packages, edit files and manage a system service. Commands are implementation examples, not a tested VPS recipe: check them against your Linux distribution, FFmpeg build and media files before relying on them.

Check channel access and content rights before renting a server

Confirm YouTube Live access

YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. In YouTube Studio, create or configure a stream for an encoder and copy the stream URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for the channel and encoder workflow at YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and methods.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not post it in a screenshot, repository, public command history or support thread. Store it in a protected configuration file on the VPS, restrict who can read that file, and rotate the key in Studio if it is exposed.

Make sure every playlist item is cleared for live use

Use recordings you own or are licensed to stream on YouTube. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the necessary rights, including applicable music rights; its terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube livestream terms and its guidance on live copyright issues.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A stream can be interrupted even if you have a licence when the rights owner has not added your channel to the relevant Content ID allowlist. Resolve that with the rights owner before going live; possession of a licence alone does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.

Pick a stream quality the server and budget can sustain

Start with YouTube’s encoder recommendations, then confirm that the chosen VPS can encode and send the stream continuously. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Its settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings before choosing a different resolution or codec.

For a straightforward starting point, YouTube lists 4 Mbps as its recommended H.264 video bitrate for 240p–720p at 30 fps. That is a YouTube ingest recommendation, not a promise that a particular VPS can encode the video or has enough network capacity. The example below scales output to 720p, uses 30 fps and targets 4 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio. Higher resolutions and bitrates raise both the server workload and transfer use.

Prepare the VPS and an ordered playlist

  1. Choose a Linux instance and region. Check the current plan’s CPU, memory, disk, monthly outbound-transfer allowance, overage rate, tax and any regional or IP add-ons. Do not choose on the advertised CPU/RAM price alone. Make sure its network path has headroom above the encoded stream bitrate.
  2. Install FFmpeg. Use the package manager for your Linux distribution, or another trusted installation method, and confirm the installed build includes the encoders you intend to use. For the example below, FFmpeg needs libx264 and AAC support. Check with ffmpeg -encoders; package names and available builds vary by distribution.
  3. Create a directory for the media. For example, use /srv/youtube and give the service account read access to the playlist and video files. Keep the directory’s disk use within the VPS storage limit.
  4. Make a concat-demuxer playlist file. Create /srv/youtube/playlist.txt with one file entry per video, in the order you want them played:
    file '/srv/youtube/video-01.mp4'
    file '/srv/youtube/video-02.mp4'
    file '/srv/youtube/video-03.mp4'

    Use absolute paths, and keep filenames and paths free of single quotes unless you escape them correctly for FFmpeg’s concat format. The command below loops the list in that order. For predictable joins, first check that the files have compatible stream layouts, codecs, frame sizes and time bases. Files with differing formats may need to be normalized or re-encoded; playlist ordering and media compatibility depend on the files and FFmpeg build.

  5. Check the files before the live test. Inspect each file’s video and audio streams with ffprobe and play the playlist locally if practical. The example expects each item to contain video and audio. Missing audio, unusual frame rates, damaged files or inconsistent streams can produce gaps, errors or unexpected output.

Protect the stream key and start FFmpeg

Create a root-readable environment file at /etc/youtube-live.env with the primary ingest URL shown in YouTube Studio and the stream key. The URL and key are separate values; use the address YouTube gives your channel rather than guessing an ingest host.

YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL='PASTE_THE_PRIMARY_RTMPS_INGEST_URL_FROM_STUDIO'
YT_STREAM_KEY='PASTE_THE_STREAM_KEY_FROM_STUDIO'

Set restrictive ownership and permissions, for example sudo chown root:root /etc/youtube-live.env and sudo chmod 600 /etc/youtube-live.env. The system service manager reads the file and passes its values to the service; do not put the key in the script itself.

Create /usr/local/bin/youtube-live-start and make it executable. This example is for a list of compatible files with audio and video; confirm it works with your installed FFmpeg and actual playlist before scheduling it to run unattended.

#!/bin/sh
set -eu
: "${YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL:?Set YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL}"
: "${YT_STREAM_KEY:?Set YT_STREAM_KEY}"
exec ffmpeg -hide_banner -loglevel info
  -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0
  -i /srv/youtube/playlist.txt
  -vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2"
  -r 30 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p

  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "${YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL%/}/${YT_STREAM_KEY}"

The scale and pad filters preserve the picture’s aspect ratio within a 1280×720 frame. At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP gives a two-second keyframe interval. -re reads the media at real-time speed; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input playlist. The bitrate flags target a constant 4 Mbps video stream; the audio adds 128 kbps. Do not assume that this example is appropriate for every file or server. If your source material differs substantially, normalize it before streaming or adjust the encoder settings and then retest.

Set the script’s owner and permissions so the service account can execute it without exposing the key file. The ingest URL and key must be joined in the form YouTube specifies for an encoder connection. If Studio provides a different endpoint format or a backup ingest address, use YouTube’s current instructions rather than editing the example by guesswork.

Keep the stream running after a reboot or encoder failure

On a systemd-based Linux distribution, save a service unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-live.service. Replace stream with the dedicated Linux account that can read the media and execute the script.

[Unit]
Description=YouTube playlist livestream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/youtube
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-live.env

Restart=always
RestartSec=10
NoNewPrivileges=true
ProtectSystem=full
ReadWritePaths=/srv/youtube

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Load and enable it with sudo systemctl daemon-reload, sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-live.service, then inspect it with sudo systemctl status youtube-live.service and sudo journalctl -u youtube-live.service -f. A process restart can recover from some failures, but it does not prove the YouTube stream is live or that the playlist is playing correctly. Check the live preview in Studio as well as the service logs.

Test the stream, then monitor the server and YouTube preview

  1. Run a short private or unlisted test first. Confirm the encoder connects and that Studio reports the incoming stream. YouTube recommends testing and checking the preview; see its live streaming tips.
  2. Watch the picture and sound across playlist joins. Check for black frames, silence, abrupt volume changes, incorrect ordering, repeated or skipped items, and aspect-ratio problems. Listen to the stream rather than relying only on an encoder log.
  3. Check the VPS while it encodes. Watch CPU, memory, disk space and outbound network use. If encoding pegs the available CPU or the network cannot maintain the upload, reduce resolution or bitrate, use compatible pre-encoded material where appropriate, or select a more capable plan.
  4. Exercise recovery deliberately. During a test, check whether the service returns after a controlled restart and whether Studio sees the new incoming stream. YouTube or the network may drop a connection; service restart settings alone do not verify that reconnection succeeds.
  5. Keep logs and an alert path. Review systemd and FFmpeg logs, check remaining disk space, and arrange a way to notice if the stream is no longer live. A running process is not the same as a healthy YouTube broadcast.

Calculate whether the full monthly VPS bill fits ₹2,000

At a 4 Mbps video bitrate, the video payload alone is about 1.296 TB over a 30-day month using decimal units: 4 megabits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This is an arithmetic estimate, not a provider-published figure, and excludes protocol overhead. The example’s 128 kbps audio increases total transfer, as do any higher video settings.

Before committing, get the provider’s current quote for the instance region and calculate the whole bill. Include the base instance, included egress, any overage beyond that allowance, taxes, currency conversion, IPv4 or other add-ons, backups and storage. Verify the current terms for the exact plan: no first-party India VPS price or workload benchmark establishes that a suitable always-on instance fits the ₹2,000 target.

Plan archives and monetization separately from uptime

A long live stream may not leave a complete replay

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, plan separate live segments below that threshold and keep a separate recording backup. See YouTube’s live archive guidance. A VPS loop continuing for days does not guarantee one complete archive.

Continuous runtime does not establish monetization eligibility

A rotating playlist does not automatically qualify a channel for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies expect content to be original and authentic rather than mass-produced, generic or repetitive; reviewers may consider the channel’s theme, most-viewed and newest videos, watch-time-heavy content and metadata. On July 15, 2025, YouTube’s policy page clarified that its existing repetitious-content rule includes repetitive or mass-produced material and renamed it “inauthentic content.” A repetitive playlist may raise policy concerns, but that does not determine the outcome for an individual channel. Copyright compliance and monetization eligibility are separate questions. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • Studio does not show an incoming stream: Confirm live access, the primary ingest URL and key, and that outbound RTMPS traffic is allowed. Check the FFmpeg log for connection or authentication errors; rotate the key in Studio if it may have been exposed.
  • The service starts, then exits or restarts repeatedly: Read journalctl for the FFmpeg error. Verify the playlist path, permissions, file paths and installed encoder support. Check that every listed file exists and is readable by the service account.
  • Playlist joins fail or video/audio changes unexpectedly: The concat demuxer expects compatible streams for a straightforward loop. Inspect the files with ffprobe, normalize incompatible sources, and test every transition before going live.
  • Video stutters, freezes or drops frames: Compare CPU use and outbound capacity with the configured resolution and bitrate. Lower the encoding load or stream settings, then repeat a sustained test; a nominal plan specification is not proof of continuous capacity.
  • Picture is wrong-sized or letterboxed: Check the scale and pad filter and compare Studio’s preview with the source aspect ratio. Adjust the output filter only after confirming the intended frame size and avoiding unintended cropping or distortion.
  • Audio is silent, clipped or inconsistent: Check that source files contain audio, inspect their levels, and listen through several joins. The example encodes AAC at 128 kbps, but cannot correct missing, damaged or badly mixed source audio.
  • The VPS says FFmpeg is active but YouTube is offline: Inspect the live preview and connection logs; a live encoder process alone is not evidence of a working stream. Check network connectivity, YouTube’s ingest status and whether a restart actually re-established the feed.
  • The replay is missing or incomplete: Check the stream’s duration against YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance. Keep a local or separate server-side recording if a replay is important.
