For ordinary uploads, YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at the frame rate at which each video was recorded. For one continuous live output, however, the encoder sends a single configured cadence, so a mixed-rate library may need to be conformed in the playout pipeline. Choose a target based on your footage, deinterlace interlaced sources first, and test motion and audio before leaving the channel running.
When to preserve frame rates—and when to normalize
Separate uploads and a continuous live stream have different requirements. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends preserving the recorded frame rate. Its common upload rates are 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps; other rates, including 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94, are also accepted. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
For a 24/7 live output assembled from videos with different rates, the encoder still emits one configured frame rate. If the playout system requires a common cadence, conform the assets to a chosen output rate in that pipeline. This is a production choice, not a YouTube rule that every source file must be converted. YouTube recommends automatic detection of live resolution and frame rate by default; manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key. Its live encoder settings guidance covers supported settings.
Inventory your video library
Before batch conversion, inspect each file’s actual frame rate and scan type. Note exact and fractional rates separately—for example, 24 versus 23.976, or 30 versus 29.97—and identify variable-frame-rate and interlaced footage. The upload recommendations include common rates, while YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance lists less-common rates such as 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 as acceptable.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This inventory is an operational step, not a YouTube-mandated tool or target rate. Keep a record of each asset’s source properties and any converted output so you can trace cadence or synchronization problems later.
Choose a target for the live output
There is no universal house rate for every channel. Start with the dominant source footage and the kind of motion viewers will see. A channel made mostly of 25 fps documentary footage may be better served by a 25 fps output than by converting everything to 30 fps. Converting 25 fps material to 30 fps does not create five additional moments of real motion each second.
- Mostly one native rate: Preserve that cadence where the encoder and playout system allow it.
- Mixed rates: Compare representative clips at a candidate output rate before processing the full library.
- Motion-sensitive footage: Include pans, sports, game footage, or other fast movement in the test. A rate that looks acceptable on a static interview may not look smooth on a fast pan.
- Existing live encoder constraints: Confirm the output rate supported by your encoder and streaming setup. YouTube Live supports encoder output up to 60 fps.
These are workflow judgments rather than additional YouTube requirements. The goal is a consistent live output without needlessly altering footage that can remain at its recorded rate.

What frame-rate conversion actually does
A constant-frame-rate conversion is not just a change to a file’s frame-rate label. FFmpeg’s fps filter documentation describes converting to a specified constant rate by duplicating or dropping frames as necessary. Dropping reduces the number of sampled moments; duplication can appear as judder or a brief hold.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11FFmpeg also documents a separate framerate filter that interpolates new frames from existing ones. Interpolation creates synthetic motion, which can produce artifacts around occlusions, fast movement, or scene cuts. The documentation distinguishes the filter’s operation; it does not guarantee that interpolation will look clean for a particular clip.
A sound conversion should preserve the intended clip duration and keep audio synchronized. Changing timestamps or merely retagging a file is not equivalent to resampling frames. Avoid choosing a conversion method solely because its output file reports the desired rate: review the resulting motion and synchronization.

Deinterlace interlaced footage before upload
YouTube says interlaced content should be deinterlaced before uploading. Its example converts 1080i60 to 1080p30. Interlaced fields are not the same thing as progressive frames; do not simply relabel 60 interlaced fields per second as 60 progressive frames per second. Deinterlace first, then assess the resulting progressive cadence for your live output.
Validate a short test playlist
- Build a representative sample. Include the library’s lowest and highest rates, fast motion, pans, titles, scene cuts, and interlaced archive footage if you have it.
- Play the sample through the intended pipeline. Use the actual playout and encoder path where possible, rather than judging only the source files.
- Check cadence and duration. Watch for repeated, dropped, or visibly interpolated frames, and verify that each clip retains its intended duration.
- Check audio at joins. Listen for sync drift or abrupt discontinuities where one clip ends and the next begins.
- Confirm encoder output. Verify that the live encoder reports the expected frame rate and resolution.
- Test before going live and monitor during the stream. YouTube recommends pre-event tests with movement and audio similar to the real stream, and advises monitoring stream health and messages during an event.
For a continuous channel, do required conversions before assets enter the always-on playout path when practical. Keep source and output properties with the media record; this makes it easier to isolate a problem to a particular asset or conversion.

Troubleshooting mixed-rate playback
Motion looks uneven after conversion
Check the source and output rates and identify whether conversion is dropping or duplicating frames. Try a short section with the channel’s most demanding motion at another candidate output cadence; do not assume a higher output number restores motion detail absent from the source.
Artifacts appear around fast movement or scene cuts
If you used interpolation, inspect those sections closely. Synthetic frames can produce visible artifacts in complex motion. Compare with a conversion based on frame duplication or dropping, or preserve the source rate if the live pipeline permits it.
Audio drifts or clips change duration
Check that the conversion preserves timestamps, intended duration, and audio synchronization. A metadata-only frame-rate change is not a substitute for frame resampling. Recheck audio at joins in the complete playout path.

Interlaced footage looks combed or has the wrong cadence
Confirm that the footage was deinterlaced before upload or further frame interpolation. YouTube’s example treats 1080i60 as interlaced material to convert to 1080p30, not as 60 progressive frames.
The live stream’s reported rate differs from the intended rate
Check the encoder’s selected output settings and the stream configuration. YouTube recommends automatic detection by default; if you need manual resolution selection, check that you are using a custom stream key and verify the encoder’s actual reported output.
