Use FFmpeg’s blackdetect filter to flag near-black intervals in your finished video, then review each timestamp by eye. A flag is not proof of a mistake: fades, dark scenes, title cards, and intentional pauses can all be valid. Before going live, separately check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream health; a file scan cannot confirm what your encoder is actually sending.
Scan the video file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s blackdetect filter identifies video intervals that are almost completely black and writes detection details to the log and frame metadata. Its documented options let you set the minimum interval duration, how dark a pixel must be, and what proportion of the picture must meet that pixel threshold. See the FFmpeg Filters Documentation for the filter reference.
For a half-second minimum interval, using the documented default threshold values, run:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "blackdetect=d=0.5:pix_th=0.10:pic_th=0.98" -an -f null -
Replace input.mp4 with your filename. This example changes the minimum duration to 0.5 seconds; it is not a universal setting. FFmpeg’s documented defaults are a two-second minimum duration, pix_th=0.10, and pic_th=0.98. Defaults and behavior can depend on the FFmpeg version installed, so check the documentation and test against representative footage.

Understand what the thresholds mean
dis the minimum duration an interval must meet to be reported. A shorter value can reveal brief interruptions, but may also flag quick intentional transitions.pix_this the luma threshold for an individual pixel to count as black. It is scaled to the input luma range.pic_this the minimum proportion of the image that must meet the pixel condition for the picture to count as black. A high proportion can miss a black area confined to part of the frame; a more permissive threshold may flag intentionally dark footage.
Read and review the output
Look in FFmpeg’s log for the reported start, end, and duration of each detected interval. Seek to each timestamp and inspect frames before, during, and after it. The filter flags footage based on thresholds; it cannot decide whether a dark moment belongs in your film.
- Scan the final encoded file that you plan to use, not just an earlier export.
- Note the start, end, and duration of each reported interval.
- Review the surrounding footage. Decide whether the interval is an intentional fade or scene, an editing gap, a failed source, or a playback or encoding problem.
- Correct only confirmed faults, render the final version, and scan that version again.
When you need to flag individual frames
blackdetect reports intervals that meet a minimum duration. FFmpeg’s blackframe filter is the alternative to consult when your goal is to identify individual near-black frames. Its options and output are documented in the FFmpeg filter reference. Neither filter replaces viewing the flagged material in context.

Check the actual YouTube feed before and during the stream
A scan answers whether the video file contains frames that meet your chosen black thresholds. It does not establish that the correct video, scene, encoder, or outgoing connection is in use at showtime. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event, checking the Live Control Room preview before starting, and monitoring stream health, messages, and audio and video quality during the broadcast.
- Run a test with representative motion and audio before the event.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and inspect its preview before starting the stream.
- After going live, monitor stream health and any messages, and keep checking picture and sound quality.
- Verify that the event is accessible from the channel and watch pages and on mobile.
YouTube does not document a dedicated black-frame detector in the cited Live Control Room guidance. The preview and health tools help you assess the outgoing feed, but they are not a substitute for analyzing the video file. For encoder setup, use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance; settings can change. If the outgoing picture or sound is poor, YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide advises checking the encoder and investigating the local archive.

Troubleshoot detections and black output
FFmpeg reports a black interval that looks intentional
Check the surrounding frames and compare the interval with the intended edit. A fade, dark scene, title card, or pause can meet the filter’s thresholds. Do not remove it solely because it was reported.
The scan misses a black region in part of the picture
pic_th sets how much of the image must satisfy the pixel threshold. If only part of the frame is black, the interval may not meet that ratio. Review the relevant frames visually and adjust the threshold only after testing representative material.

The scan flags dark but usable footage
The pixel threshold may be too permissive for your source, or the footage may genuinely be very dark. Inspect samples and tune pix_th and, if needed, pic_th; do not treat the documented defaults as editorial standards.
The video scan is clean, but the livestream shows black
The scan only checks the input file. Confirm the intended source and scene in the encoder, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. If the problem persists, check YouTube’s troubleshooting steps and the local archive to help distinguish a source-file issue from an outgoing-stream issue.
