Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can run a radio-style YouTube livestream from a Windows PC with encoder software: enable live streaming on your channel, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, connect the stream key, route your audio, and test the preview before going public. Before you start, make sure you have permission to livestream every track and recording you use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt one when it detects a match.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-streaming restriction from the preceding 90 days, and meets YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16 for live streaming. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- A Windows PC running encoder software. YouTube’s encoder workflow is suited to programs that need deliberate audio routing, a graphic or static visual, or other production controls.
- A stable internet connection with enough available upload capacity for your chosen stream settings.
- Music and other material cleared for the livestream. Permission for a recording, composition, or ordinary online playback does not by itself establish permission for a YouTube livestream or its archive.
A webcam broadcast is simpler when you only need to show a camera. An encoder is the better fit for a composed radio-style program with routed audio and a visual. YouTube supports both workflows.
Set up the stream in YouTube Studio
- Enable live streaming early. Verify the channel and enable live streaming if you have not done so before. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Check that the channel has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then use the encoder or stream workflow. Create or schedule the event and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for it.
- Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not share it publicly. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before the next broadcast.
- Connect the encoder. In your Windows encoder, choose the YouTube or RTMPS service if available, then connect the account or enter the stream URL and key. YouTube recommends RTMPS. OBS is one encoder option named in YouTube’s specialist documentation; the workflow is not limited to paid software. Start with the encoder’s normal SDR preset unless your source, hardware, and production workflow support HDR.
For YouTube’s current workflow and account checks, see YouTube live streaming tips and Get started with live streaming.
Route and check the radio audio
- Select the program source. In the encoder’s audio mixer, choose the playback device or production source carrying your radio program. Play representative audio and confirm that its level meter moves.
- Add a microphone only if needed. For a host-led show, add the microphone as a separate input and balance speech against the music. A music-only feed does not need a microphone.
- Listen for problems. Monitor the encoder output with headphones. Check for silence, clipping, excessive background noise, and an unintended echo or duplicate audio source. Make sure the output remains audible when you switch between tracks or sources.
- Choose a visual. An audio-led stream still needs a video output from the encoder, such as a suitable static image or program graphic. Use imagery you have permission to broadcast, and check YouTube’s preview to confirm that the visual is actually being sent.
YouTube’s encoder guidance mentions microphones and headphones as typical gear, but expensive equipment is not a prerequisite. For a radio feed, selecting the correct program source matters more than adding a camera.

Clear music rights before streaming
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If it detects third-party material, the stream may be replaced with a placeholder image, temporarily interrupted, or terminated. A licensed stream can still be interrupted if the rights owner uses Content ID and has not allowlisted your channel.
- Use only tracks and recordings for which you have permission that covers YouTube livestreaming. Check the scope for the relevant compositions, sound recordings, territories, and any replay or archive.
- Keep written records of permissions and license terms. If a rights holder uses Content ID, ask whether they can allowlist your channel.
- YouTube’s Audio Library is identified by YouTube as a source of copyright-safe music and sound effects, but check the terms for each item and whether they fit your intended use.
- YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content. Do not assume a Creator Music license clears a livestream.
The sources cited here establish YouTube’s platform rules, not which Indian music or broadcast permissions apply to an individual program. For a stream aimed at viewers in India, confirm the rights for the tracks, recordings, territories, livestream, and any archive with the relevant rights holders or qualified local counsel. No blanket conclusion about Indian permissions follows from YouTube’s general guidance.

Choose encoder settings that your connection can sustain
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Recommended H.264 bitrates vary by resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s recommendations for 30 fps, not measured connection speeds or guarantees. YouTube automatically transcodes incoming streams into playback formats.

| Output format | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations accessed in 2026; the help page does not state a publication date. Settings can change, and YouTube’s table gives different values for other codecs and frame rates. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions if you choose a different format.
Choose the resolution and frame rate your PC and connection can maintain, rather than defaulting to the highest option. YouTube recommends about 20% of upload headroom above the combined stream bitrate and cautions that a shared connection can reduce the bandwidth actually available to you. For a single 6 Mbps stream, that guidance implies planning for about 7.2 Mbps of stable available upload capacity (6 Ă— 1.2). The 7.2 Mbps figure is arithmetic based on YouTube’s recommendation, not a separately published YouTube statistic. More headroom is prudent on a variable or shared network. Test your outbound upload speed before scheduling the broadcast.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Prepare ahead. YouTube’s tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled broadcast.
- Send a representative test. Use the actual audio sources and settings planned for the program. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check Live Control Room. Start sending from the encoder and wait for the incoming stream to appear in the preview. Confirm picture, audio level, and stream health before starting the public event.
- Check the viewer experience. Open the watch page on another device and confirm that the stream plays as expected. If the event is scheduled, verify the event and audience settings before going live.
- Monitor while live. Watch the encoder and YouTube stream-health indicators, listen for audio changes, and respond to interruptions. When the event is over, stop the event in YouTube, then stop the encoder.

- The channel cannot go live: Check verification, the 90-day restriction window, and whether first-time activation is still processing. Allow up to 24 hours for initial enablement.
- YouTube Studio shows no incoming stream: Confirm that the encoder is running, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and the intended event is selected. If the key may have been exposed, replace it and update the encoder.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Lower the resolution or bitrate, check actual available upload capacity, and reduce competing traffic on the connection. Keep the recommended upload headroom; a shared network can make a speed-test result less available during the broadcast.
- The stream arrives but has no audio: Check the selected encoder input, operating-system playback device, and mixer level. Play audio and watch for movement on the correct meter, then confirm it in the Live Control Room preview.
- Audio is distorted or echoed: Reduce levels if they clip, and disable duplicate capture of the same source. Monitor the program with headphones to locate the source of echo or noise.
- YouTube interrupts the stream or displays a placeholder: Check for third-party content matches and review your rights. Contact the relevant rights holder about permission and, where applicable, Content ID allowlisting; do not assume that possession of a license prevents interruption automatically.
- The preview looks wrong: Check that the encoder is sending the intended video output and that its resolution and frame rate match your chosen settings. Test with the real program layout before the scheduled broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your aim is to keep a YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving a Windows PC and home connection running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
