You can run prerecorded gaming footage as a YouTube livestream by preparing a local playlist, sending it from FFmpeg to the ingest URL and stream key in YouTube Studio, then checking the preview before you go live. For a single file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; for several files, choose the concat demuxer when the files are compatible or the concat filter when you need to normalize or re-encode them. These pieces require testing together: looping an input alone does not guarantee gapless transitions or a stream that recovers after a failure.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and prepare the footage
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Encoder streams are supported for gameplay. Check the channel’s current eligibility and finish any setup in YouTube Studio before planning a public rerun. YouTube Help: get started with live streaming
- Choose footage you have the right to broadcast, including its game audio, music, overlays and any included third-party material. A livestream using material you do not have permission to use can encounter copyright enforcement. Review YouTube’s copyright safety checklist before scheduling.
- Prepare the video files locally and test that each plays correctly with sound. A rerun channel is a broadcast of prerecorded footage, not a camera feed.
- Make a test stream or use YouTube’s preview before announcing a public start. Codec, timestamps, container compatibility and the selected FFmpeg method can affect whether files join cleanly.
Create an encoder stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow.
- Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown by YouTube into your FFmpeg output configuration. Use the endpoint YouTube displays for that stream rather than copying an old URL from an example.
- Keep the stream key private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your broadcast. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot or shared document. If exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
YouTube’s setup guidance explains the encoder stream URL and key: Set up your encoder for live streaming. Treat the key like a password; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to the stream.
Choose how FFmpeg should handle the playlist
One file, repeated forever
For one source file, FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 to loop an input indefinitely. It is an input option, so put it before the relevant -i. The simplest conceptual pattern is:

Replace the output placeholder with the exact ingest endpoint and private key arrangement for your YouTube stream, and choose output options for the media and current YouTube recommendations. Never publish a real key. Confirm the installed FFmpeg version and its local help for option syntax before using a command in production.
Several files with the concat demuxer
When files have compatible stream parameters, the concat demuxer can present them as one sequential input and may let you avoid re-encoding. Create a text file such as playlist.txt with one entry per file:

Paths and quoting may need adjustment for your operating system; test the end of one file and start of the next for gaps, freezes, missing audio or timestamp problems. Several files needing normalization or re-encoding
If the files differ in resolution, frame rate, codecs, time bases or other parameters, or you need filter-based processing, FFmpeg’s concat filter is the alternative that supports re-encoding. Normalize the inputs to a consistent output format and encode the resulting video and audio for YouTube. Re-encoding uses CPU or hardware-encoder capacity; a filter graph must also account for the number of inputs and their audio/video streams. Build and test the graph for your specific files rather than assuming the demuxer playlist can be substituted unchanged.
FFmpeg distinguishes the concat demuxer from the concat filter and documents the looping option in its FAQ on concatenating video files and command-line options. A playlist that loops forever is not automatically gapless, timestamp-safe or self-healing.

Set the output for YouTube and your network
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance when selecting protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate. YouTube currently recommends RTMPS. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; it also recommends keeping upload capacity above the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of a successful stream. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrates before going live because technical recommendations can change.
- Use an output bitrate your sustained upload connection can handle with headroom, including audio and any other concurrent traffic.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes that setting, and do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second ceiling.
- Use RTMPS and the ingest URL provided in YouTube Studio; do not use a stream key copied from a different broadcast.
- If stream-copying, verify that the source codec and stream parameters fit the output and platform requirements. If they do not, re-encode rather than expecting FFmpeg to convert them by copying.
- A wired Ethernet connection is an optional way to connect the streaming computer to the router; it is not a YouTube requirement. The important requirement is a reliable connection with sufficient upload capacity.
Start, preview and monitor the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg and check its console output for input, decoding, timestamp, encoding and connection errors.
- Wait for the signal and preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room. Verify moving video, audio levels and the transition between playlist items.
- Start the public broadcast in YouTube when the preview is correct. Keep watching both the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s live status; a successful initial connection does not prove that the whole playlist will run without interruption.
- For a continuous channel, decide how you will supervise the host, process and network, and how you will restart the broadcast if the process or connection fails.
-stream_loop -1only repeats media; it does not restart FFmpeg after a crash or reconnect under every failure condition.
YouTube recommends preparing ahead and checking the preview before going live. Its encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that every longer stream is forcibly stopped at exactly 12 hours or guarantee archival of every longer broadcast; plan stream continuity and recordings around YouTube’s current behavior. Troubleshooting common failures
