You can rerun an esports tournament VOD as a YouTube Live broadcast by scheduling an event in YouTube Live Control Room, sending the authorized recording through an encoder, checking YouTube’s incoming preview, and then starting the event. First, secure permission for the exact VOD and for both the live transmission and any resulting archive. A video being publicly viewable does not, by itself, grant those rights.
1. Confirm that you have permission to rebroadcast the VOD
Resolve rights before scheduling or testing the stream. A tournament recording can contain several separately controlled elements: gameplay, camera work, commentary, music, graphics, and sponsor material. Permission to watch or share the original VOD is not necessarily permission to transmit it again as a live broadcast.
Check the tournament operator’s current rules and the game publisher’s current streaming policy. Ask the relevant rights holder whether its permission covers all of the following:
- A new live transmission of this particular recording on your YouTube channel.
- Your intended territory and any channel, monetization, attribution, delay, or eligibility conditions.
- The replay that YouTube may make available after the live event, including on-demand access.
- Each relevant component of the recording, such as broadcast audio, camera work, music, overlays, and sponsor assets.
Get clarification where the permission or policy is unclear. Rights and terms can vary by game, event, owner, territory, and use; there is no universal esports VOD rule that settles every case.

Why the game and event policies both matter
Valve’s Dota 2 Community Stream Policy is one game-specific example. It says community streams must be based on DotaTV and content the creator made or licensed, subject to the policy and event requirements. It also says operator-provided camera work and broadcast audio require operator authorization, even when available through DotaTV. Check the policy and the event’s requirements; do not apply this Dota 2 rule to other games.
SEGA’s published gameplay-video guidance is another example of publisher-specific terms. It says permission is needed for third-party intellectual property included in a gameplay video, and that product-specific policies may take priority. Its general guidance is limited to individual users under its stated conditions; it should not be treated as permission for a tournament operator’s broadcast or as a rule for other publishers.

Ask about Content ID before the scheduled stream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn you, or interrupt or terminate the stream if the matched material remains. A license does not necessarily prevent that automated response. YouTube advises a licensed creator to ask the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm this with the owner before going live. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
2. Prepare the YouTube event and encoder
YouTube’s ordinary creator workflow uses a broadcast event in Live Control Room and an encoder that sends the video and audio feed using the event’s stream key. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast—the video event—from the stream carrying the feed and its settings. A saved stream configuration can be reused for broadcasts at different times, but a new rerun still needs the correct event and source feed.

- Set up the encoder and source. Select a playback or encoder setup that sends the authorized file’s video and audio in the order you intend. Confirm that the correct file is loaded and that its audio is audible. The YouTube guide does not require a particular encoder product or computer.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose the stream workflow and create or schedule the broadcast. Enter the title and description, select the privacy setting, and optionally add a thumbnail. If the event is for later, schedule it for the intended start time. Feature availability can vary by channel, so follow the options shown in your account.
- Copy the stream key into the encoder. Use the key for the intended event and ensure the encoder’s stream configuration matches the event. Keep the key private: someone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start the encoder, then inspect YouTube’s preview. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed. Check that the picture and audio are correct before using the Live Control Room’s go-live action.
YouTube’s live streaming production guide describes this scheduling, encoder, and preview workflow. For a typical creator rerun, follow the interface rather than introducing a separate API workflow; YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a developer option, not a requirement for this setup.
3. Schedule and preflight the rerun
Before the audience arrives, check the event details, source, and incoming feed. If you run a private or unlisted technical check, make sure both the rights permission and the YouTube privacy settings are appropriate for that test. A test transmission is still a transmission, so do not assume it is exempt from the license.

- Confirm the title, description, thumbnail, privacy setting, and scheduled start time.
- Verify that the intended recording is loaded and plays from the beginning, with the expected video and audio.
- Confirm the encoder is using the correct stream key and that YouTube’s preview shows the intended feed.
- Assign someone to monitor the preview and live status. Decide in advance who will stop the encoder and end the event if the stream is challenged or interrupted.
Run the check early enough to correct a wrong file, key, or event setting before the scheduled start. Do not start the public broadcast until the rights checks are complete and the preview is right.

When the rerun is over, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder from sending content. Review the resulting archive and any copyright notices in YouTube Studio before promoting or retaining it. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the live stream completes if the creator chooses to archive it. Confirm that your permission covers on-demand access as well as the live transmission; YouTube’s guide calls for clearing rights for live streams, rebroadcasts, and audio/video on demand.

5. Common problems and what to do
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the encoder is running and that the stream key and configuration correspond to the intended event. Recheck the event in Live Control Room and wait for the preview to appear before going live.
- The preview shows the wrong picture or no sound: Check the selected source file and its playback position, then verify the encoder’s video and audio inputs. Correct the feed before using the go-live action.
- YouTube warns, replaces, or interrupts the stream for third-party content: Stop the transmission if the content is challenged. Do not assume that a public VOD or a license alone resolves the issue. Check the rights for the matched material and, if licensed, ask the owner about Content ID allowlisting for your channel.
- A claim appears on the archive after the broadcast: Review the notice in Studio and contact the relevant rights holder if you believe the use is authorized. Check that the license covers archived, on-demand access; live permission may not settle archive rights.
