To stream prerecorded video to YouTube around the clock from a VPS, install FFmpeg on a Linux server, give it YouTube Live’s RTMPS ingest URL and stream key, test a real stream, then run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd so it starts at boot and restarts if the process exits. That makes the process persistent; it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. Media availability, server capacity, network connectivity, credentials and YouTube’s stream health still determine whether the broadcast continues.
What the setup does—and what it does not
The VPS runs FFmpeg and sends video and audio over the network to YouTube. YouTube Live Control Room supplies the destination URL and stream key. FFmpeg can read a local media file in real time, encode or pass through compatible streams, and send the output to an RTMP-family endpoint. A service manager can bring the process back after an exit or server reboot.
Automatic restarts are a recovery measure, not an uptime guarantee. They will not fix a missing or unreadable media file, a full disk, an invalid key, an overloaded server, a broken network route or a YouTube-side issue. Plan to monitor the stream and diagnose the underlying cause when it fails.
Choose and prepare the VPS
Select a Linux VPS that can sustain the particular FFmpeg workload and upload rate you need. A listed vCPU count alone is not proof that a server can encode your video continuously: the demand depends on whether you re-encode, the input resolution and frame rate, encoder preset, scaling and filters.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Encoding: If the source already has compatible codecs and stream properties, stream copying may avoid the CPU cost of re-encoding. Otherwise, test the intended encode on the actual server.
- Network: Confirm sustained outbound capacity for the video bitrate plus audio, protocol overhead and rate variation. Check the provider’s egress terms rather than assuming advertised bandwidth is unlimited.
- Storage and recovery: Make sure the media is available to FFmpeg after reboots and that the server has enough space for files and logs.
- Region and route: Consider the server’s network path to YouTube ingest, then validate it with a real stream.
There is no universal VPS size that can be recommended without knowing the media and encoding settings. The Ubuntu and systemd setup in this community implementation example illustrates one approach; its choices are not a provider benchmark or a sizing guarantee.
Get YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to the stream settings for the broadcast you intend to run.
- Retrieve the ingest URL and stream key. If the RTMPS URL is hidden, YouTube’s help page notes that you may need to reveal it using the lock control in the URL field. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Use the URL and key in the form required by your FFmpeg output configuration. Keep the key secret: do not commit it to source control, expose it in public logs, or leave it in a shared shell history. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Live settings.
YouTube explains: “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use RTMPS where supported by your ingest configuration.

Choose encoder settings that fit YouTube and the VPS
YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds). Supported audio includes AAC and MP3. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate; the H.264 examples below are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not VPS specifications.
| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These recommendations are from YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026; check the linked page before configuring a new stream because platform settings can change. Leave upload headroom above the video bitrate for audio, transport overhead and rate variation, and verify the actual sustained upload path. Do not select a bitrate above what either YouTube recommends for the chosen output or the VPS connection can sustain.

Match the output resolution and frame rate to your intended broadcast and the server’s stable capacity. If the VPS cannot sustain the desired encode, use a less demanding preset or lower output resolution and test again rather than relying on a nominal CPU count.
Inspect the media and test an FFmpeg stream
Before building a persistent service, inspect the input with ffprobe and determine whether its video and audio streams are compatible with the desired YouTube output. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes real-time input and FLV output patterns for RTMP streaming. The exact options depend on the installed FFmpeg version, input, codecs and chosen output settings, so verify the command against that version.

The command’s structure is: read the media at real-time speed, optionally loop it, choose whether to copy or encode the video and audio streams, then send the output to the RTMPS ingest endpoint with the stream key. Do not put a real key in a published example or paste it into a public terminal transcript. If the source needs normalization, scaling or re-encoding, account for that additional CPU load and test it on the VPS.
Run a manual test before automating the stream. YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health during the event. Check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, the expected resolution and frame rate, audio presence, health messages and any warnings.

Run FFmpeg persistently with systemd
Use a service manager rather than leaving FFmpeg attached to an interactive SSH session. A systemd service can start at boot, restart after an unexpected process exit and retain logs for diagnosis. Use a dedicated account where practical, and place credentials in a root-readable environment or configuration file, or another secret mechanism suitable for the host, instead of embedding them in a publicly accessible script.
- Create a service definition that invokes the tested FFmpeg command with the intended media path and output configuration.
- Configure it to start after boot and to restart when FFmpeg exits unexpectedly. Choose a restart delay that avoids a rapid failure loop.
- Enable and start the service using your distribution’s systemd workflow, then inspect its status and logs.
- Deliberately test recovery by restarting the service and rebooting the VPS. Confirm that the media remains available and the stream returns to YouTube.
A restart policy only responds to process exits. If the service repeatedly fails, inspect its logs and resolve the cause—such as an unavailable file, exhausted storage, bad key, insufficient encoding capacity, network outage or YouTube-side problem—instead of treating repeated restarts as a fix.
Verify and monitor the 24/7 stream
- Test representative video with motion and actual audio, not only a static frame.
- Confirm YouTube receives the resolution and frame rate you intended and that audio is present.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and messages during the test and after changes.
- Check service status and logs when FFmpeg exits or YouTube stops receiving data.
- Include a VPS reboot in the acceptance test so you know the service starts again and can access its media and credentials.
The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation includes health states; for example, noData means the live backend has no information about stream health. Treat YouTube’s health messages as diagnostic input alongside FFmpeg and system logs.
Common failures and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| YouTube receives no data | Check that the service is running, the output URL and key are correct, outbound connectivity works, and the media path is readable. Compare YouTube’s health messages with FFmpeg and system logs. |
| FFmpeg exits and restarts repeatedly | Read the service logs for the underlying error. Check file availability, disk space, credentials, encode capacity and network access; a restart loop does not repair these conditions. |
| Video arrives but is unstable or does not match the target | Recheck codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval and CBR settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Test whether the server can sustain the chosen encode and whether the connection can sustain the output rate. |
| Audio is absent or incorrect | Inspect the input audio stream and FFmpeg stream selection; verify the output uses an audio codec supported by YouTube’s guidance, such as AAC or MP3. |
| The stream stops after a reboot | Confirm the systemd unit is enabled, the media and secret configuration are available at boot, and the service logs show a successful start. |
Or let it run in the cloud
