You can loop a prerecorded video from a Linux mini PC to YouTube Live with OBS Studio: add a Media Source and enable Loop, configure a 3840Ă—2160, 60 fps output and YouTube-compatible encoder settings, then test the complete setup under sustained load. Whether a particular mini PC can keep that workload stable depends on its encoder, drivers, cooling and upload connection; the settings alone cannot guarantee it.

Before you start: prepare the channel and computer

Enable YouTube Live ahead of time

In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming before your planned broadcast. YouTube says first-time live enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until stream day. Create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.

Check the mini PC and Linux setup

Install OBS Studio using instructions for your Linux distribution. OBS recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions and documents an Ubuntu installation path. Its basic Linux requirements include OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland; package availability and included encoders vary, so check the installed build.

Before relying on hardware encoding, verify the actual processor or GPU, Linux driver, firmware and OBS build. OBS documents Linux support for NVIDIA NVENC on GeForce 750 Ti/900-series (Maxwell) or newer, with current drivers, and Intel Quick Sync Video on Intel Core-i 2xxx or newer, recommending 4xxx or newer because earlier generations had lower quality. These are support notes, not evidence that a given mini PC can sustain 4K60. OBS cautions that compatible system requirements do not guarantee streaming capability; encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity affect the load.

Make the video repeat in OBS

Loop one local file

  1. Open OBS Studio and add a Media Source to the scene.
  2. Select the video file stored on the mini PC.
  3. Enable Loop in the source settings and confirm the source plays in the preview.
  4. Check the file’s resolution, frame rate, audio and color characteristics against the output you intend to send.

Loop a playlist

  1. Install VLC using a package compatible with your Linux distribution.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and load the playlist.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist and verify playback in the preview.

OBS documents both source types on Linux. A Media Source is the straightforward choice for a single file; VLC Video supports a collection of files but requires VLC. The documented loop controls do not guarantee gapless transitions or uninterrupted multi-day playback, so test the actual files and transitions you plan to use.

Configure YouTube’s 4K60 ingest settings

Set OBS’s output resolution to 3840Ă—2160 and frame rate to 60 fps. In YouTube’s published encoder guidance, bitrate recommendations differ by incoming video codec:

Incoming codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s current 4K/2160p at 60 fps ingest figures; the page does not display a publication year. Choose a codec that your installed OBS build and actual Linux encoder support, then use a stable bitrate within YouTube’s guidance. The recommended value is not proof that a mini PC or connection can sustain it.

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS.
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3; YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio in its advanced settings.
  • SDR color: Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth, as applicable.

In OBS, select the matching service or RTMPS server URL and enter the stream key from Live Control Room. Choose the encoder option that corresponds to the codec and hardware actually available. For a software encoder, expect potentially heavy CPU use; for a hardware encoder, do not assume the presence of an encoder name means it can handle this resolution and frame rate continuously. YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160p, so 4K streams use normal latency.

Test the mini PC and connection before broadcasting

  1. Confirm the encoder is available. In OBS’s output settings, verify that the encoder you intend to use appears and is selected. If it does not, check the OBS package, drivers and hardware support for that distribution.
  2. Check upload capacity under load. Your sustained upstream capacity needs to exceed the configured video bitrate, with practical headroom for variation and other network use. YouTube specifically recommends testing upload bitrate; a speed test by itself does not establish long-term stability.
  3. Rehearse the real workload. Run the intended file or playlist with audio and movement similar to the broadcast. YouTube explicitly advises testing with comparable audio and video movement. Continue long enough to observe overheating, encoder overload, dropped frames, audio interruption or a stalled media source.
  4. Watch YouTube’s stream health. Use the Live Control Room stream-health display and messages during the rehearsal. Correct encoder or connection warnings before the public stream.
  5. Plan for unattended failures. For a continuous stream, decide how you will respond to an internet outage, power loss, OS update, OBS crash or source-file problem. A local OBS setup depends on the mini PC, its power and its connection remaining available.

Go live and monitor the stream

  1. In OBS, start streaming with the configured RTMPS/RTMP destination and stream key.
  2. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the incoming signal is detected and check stream health before making the stream public or starting the scheduled broadcast.
  3. Keep monitoring the health status and OBS for dropped frames, overload warnings, interrupted audio or playback stalls. At 4K, YouTube uses normal latency rather than low-latency optimization.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The encoder you expected is missing in OBS Unsupported hardware, driver, distribution package or OBS build Check the exact chip and Linux driver, then verify encoder availability in the installed OBS build. Do not infer support from a product-family name alone.
OBS reports encoding overload or frames are lost The selected encoder or mini PC cannot sustain the chosen workload Review the selected encoder and test at the intended 4K60 settings for an extended period. If the machine cannot sustain the workload, use a capable system or reduce output demands; a supported encoder label is not a performance guarantee.
YouTube reports a weak or unstable connection Insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity, or competing network use Test upload performance under load, use a stable connection and leave headroom above the configured bitrate. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages.
The video does not repeat Loop is disabled, the wrong source is configured or playlist playback is not set to repeat For one file, check the Media Source’s Loop setting. For multiple files, check the VLC Video playlist and Loop Playlist.
The playlist source is unavailable VLC is not installed or the package does not match the setup Install a compatible VLC package for the Linux distribution and recheck the VLC Video source.
The stream key is rejected or the stream does not arrive Wrong stream URL or key, or Live streaming is not enabled Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm live enablement, and keep the key private. If compromised, reset it there.
First broadcast cannot start immediately First-time YouTube Live enablement is still processing Enable live streaming in advance; YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks for a loop

Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed to use every video, image and audio track in the recording. A video being prerecorded or looped does not make its contents exempt from copyright rules. Review YouTube’s live-stream setup and management guidance for current channel and stream requirements, and avoid assuming that repeated playback alone establishes eligibility for monetization or compliance with YouTube policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving a mini PC running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
