You can keep a YouTube channel live around the clock from Google Cloud by running an encoder on cloud compute and sending its output to YouTube with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. For a continuous Indian music broadcast, plan for process and machine failures, YouTube’s archive limits, and music rights before going live. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separate option for creating HLS or DASH outputs; its documented workflow does not publish directly to YouTube.
Choose the right Google Cloud architecture
For a stream whose destination is a YouTube channel, the most direct design is an encoder running on a Google Cloud compute environment and publishing to YouTube. YouTube accepts software or hardware encoders; it does not require a particular encoder model. The other Google Cloud option, the Live Stream API, is designed to ingest a contribution feed, transcode it, and create outputs in Cloud Storage. These are different delivery paths, not interchangeable ways of entering a YouTube stream key.
| Design | Destination and output | What you operate | Continuity consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Encoder running on cloud compute | Direct YouTube ingestion using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room | The encoder process and its cloud compute environment | Plan detection and recovery for encoder, machine, network, and destination failures; behavior depends on the selected setup. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | Receives RTMP or SRT and creates HLS or DASH outputs in Cloud Storage | A managed transcoding channel and its lifecycle, plus any needed delivery design | An active session has a 24-hour duration limit; a continuous service needs monitoring and a safe restart plan. |
Use the direct encoder route when the required outcome is a YouTube live broadcast. Consider the Live Stream API when the actual requirement is managed transcoding to HLS or DASH, backup input, or an output workflow based on Cloud Storage. Google’s documented API output model does not establish a direct YouTube publishing connector.
Set up a direct encoder-to-YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming for the channel. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete this before the planned launch.
- Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the channel’s Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the channel.
- Prepare your Google Cloud compute environment. Choose a compute environment in which you can install and run your selected software encoder, or use an encoder that you can operate there. The needed machine size and cost depend on resolution, frame rate, codec, feed format, redundancy, and region; there is no single size or monthly cost established for every broadcast.
- Configure the encoder’s output. Set its destination to YouTube’s server URL and provide the stream key using the encoder’s secure credential mechanism where available. Select an output profile that matches the source and the channel’s requirements. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API best-practices documentation provides bitrate recommendations by resolution, frame rate, codec, and audio configuration; do not choose a bitrate without matching those conditions to your feed.
- Start the encoder and verify the feed. Check the preview and live status in YouTube Live Control Room before treating the channel as live. Confirm that both picture and sound are present, and that the intended recording or playlist continues rather than stopping after a single item.
- Design operations for continuous service. Monitor the encoder process, the compute environment, network connectivity, and YouTube’s receiving status. Decide how an operator will detect a failure and restart or recover the feed. This is operational planning, not a guarantee that a particular encoder or cloud configuration will recover automatically.
Settings that depend on the actual music feed
Resolution, frame rate, video codec, bitrate, audio codec, and channel configuration affect compute needs and the receiving stream. The available evidence does not establish one correct set of values for every Indian music channel, and a value appropriate for one source may be unsuitable for another. Match the encoder profile to the uploaded or generated source, and consult Google Cloud’s Live Stream API best-practices guidance for its configuration-specific bitrate recommendations. Do not assume that the API recommendations automatically define the best settings for every direct encoder-to-YouTube deployment.

What changes if you use the Google Cloud Live Stream API
The API workflow is a managed ingest-and-transcode design rather than the direct encoder publishing workflow above. It accepts an SRT or RTMP input endpoint, transcodes the incoming signal into HLS or DASH renditions, and stores the generated output in Cloud Storage. Google documents automatic infrastructure provisioning, a backup input option, and integrations with Cloud Storage and other Google Cloud services.
- Choose a supported region and check availability. The quickstart lists Mumbai (
asia-south1) among supported regions. Select a region based on current availability, latency, compliance needs, and pricing rather than proximity alone. - Configure the input and output design. Prepare an encoder feed for the API’s input endpoint and specify the HLS or DASH output and Cloud Storage workflow you need. Google recommends SRT over RTMP when the encoder supports it, citing packet-loss recovery, forward error correction, support for multiple audio elementary streams, and higher bandwidth.
- Start the channel before sending input. A Live Stream API channel must be started before it accepts input. Verify the channel and generated output through the configured workflow.
- Account for limits and lifecycle. Google documents a 24-hour active streaming session duration; after that, the channel may need to be restarted. The documented quota includes a limit of 10 running channels per region, as well as caps on output stream resources. Check the current quotas for your project and region before designing capacity.
These API outputs are for HLS or DASH distribution and related workflows. The documentation described here does not show that an API channel publishes directly to a YouTube channel. Do not substitute it for the direct encoder-to-YouTube route unless you have separately established a connector or delivery design that bridges those systems.

Plan for interruptions and archive limits
Continuous operation is not the same as a guaranteed uninterrupted broadcast
A direct encoder setup can be interrupted by failure in the encoder process, compute environment, network, or YouTube ingestion. The appropriate monitoring and restart design depends on the deployment; test your recovery procedure rather than assuming a reconnect will happen. For the Live Stream API, include the documented 24-hour session ceiling in the operating plan and provide a monitored restart or continuity process.
YouTube may not archive an unbroken 24/7 stream completely
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast to create a complete single VOD archive. If preserving the music broadcast matters, arrange separate recordings and/or shorter planned live sessions, then verify YouTube’s current archive behavior before launch.

Clear music rights before broadcasting
“Indian music” does not identify who owns or controls the rights in a particular recording. A broadcast may involve separate rights in the composition, sound recording, performance, and publishing. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to hold the rights needed for worldwide use on Google services, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.
- Confirm that permissions cover livestreaming, the intended territories, and each relevant composition and sound recording.
- Ask whether performance, publishing, archive/VOD, and monetization rights are included for your intended use; do not assume one permission covers every right.
- Check with the relevant rights holders about Content ID treatment and request channel allowlisting where applicable.
- Keep a usable record of licenses, territories, terms, and any allowlisting confirmation before starting the broadcast.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. If it identifies a match, a placeholder can replace the stream; unresolved material can lead to interruption or termination. YouTube says that even a licensed stream may still be interrupted unless the relevant rightsholder adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. These practical checks do not replace legal advice, and a license for one part of a song or one use should not be treated as proof that every required right is covered.

Monetization depends on channel eligibility and music policy
YouTube Help says creators in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize live streams. Its live settings documentation names ads and Super Chat, with channel memberships available to some channels. Eligibility and feature availability depend on the channel. Music rights and Content ID policies can also constrain monetization, so operating a continuous stream alone does not establish eligibility or guarantee revenue.
Estimate the cost before committing
For a direct encoder design, calculate the compute and network costs for the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, feed format, redundancy, and region. For a Live Stream API design, include API use, Cloud Storage, and any distribution costs. No exact Google Cloud estimate is meaningful without those workload details and a current pricing calculation. Also plan separately for any recording or archive storage needed to preserve a 24/7 music feed.
