Restream can schedule a prerecorded YouTube event to start automatically, but its documented loop is limited to 10 repetitions—not an endless 24/7 broadcast. You can use Restream for a scheduled video event; for an around-the-clock channel, you need a workflow designed to provide continuous playback and should test it before relying on it.
What Restream can—and cannot—do for a 24/7 stream
Restream’s Upload & Stream workflow lets you schedule a prerecorded video for a future date and time, select YouTube as a destination, and have the event begin automatically. Its documented loop option repeats a selected video up to 10 times. That is useful for a finite scheduled event, but does not establish that a single Restream event can repeat forever. See the Restream scheduling guide.
For a true 24/7 prerecorded broadcast, plan for a service or setup that can keep supplying video continuously, and verify how it handles restarts and reconnections. YouTube’s encoder documentation lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; confirm its current capabilities and terms directly. Restream itself warns that a server may be restarted during a continuous stream longer than 24 hours and recommends restarting every 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder guidance and Restream’s duration guidance explain these constraints.
Before scheduling a Restream event
- Enable live streaming on the YouTube channel and connect the correct account in Restream. Restream says the connected account must own the channel.
- For a first YouTube live stream, Restream says phone verification is required and activation can take 24 hours. YouTube also requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check Restream’s YouTube setup guide and YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Prepare a video you have the rights to stream. A live broadcast does not exempt a creator from copyright rules or YouTube’s channel policies. Do not assume that permission to watch or download a documentary includes permission to rebroadcast it.
- Check Restream’s current storage and file-size limits for your account or add-on tier before preparing a long playlist. Limits vary by tier, as described in Restream’s Upload & Stream overview.
Schedule a prerecorded video in Restream
- Connect YouTube. In Restream, connect the YouTube channel that you own and intend to use. Complete YouTube’s live-stream activation and verification requirements before the scheduled start.
- Create a prerecorded event. Start a new stream in Restream and choose Pre-recorded livestream, then select Video. Choose an existing upload or recording, or upload a file.
- Enter event details. Add a title, description, date, and time. Add an event post or thumbnail if useful. If you choose to loop the video, Restream documents a maximum of 10 repetitions—not unlimited playback.
- Select the destination. Enable YouTube among the connected channels, then create the event. Restream says the event automatically airs at the scheduled time; its guide also describes monitoring the stream and chat while it airs.
- Check the result. Confirm that the event appears on the intended YouTube channel and monitor it when it begins. For a continuous channel, do a test run of the complete playback and recovery workflow rather than treating a successfully scheduled event as proof of uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Using an encoder instead of a scheduled video
Restream also supports streaming through encoder software using RTMP details. In that workflow, use the ingest URL and key provided for the destination you are configuring; Restream’s ingest details are not the same as YouTube’s direct ingest credentials. Follow Restream’s current YouTube streaming instructions for the specific connection.

If configuring an encoder directly for YouTube, YouTube’s guidance treats the stream key like a password and address. Keep it private, and reset it if it is exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
Encoder settings listed by Restream
Restream’s YouTube guide lists H.264 video, resolutions from 240p through 2160p, up to 60 FPS, and a bitrate range of 3,000–40,000 Kbps depending on resolution and frame rate. It lists CBR, a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (maximum 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio, with stereo audio at 128 Kbps. Treat these as the guide’s listed settings, not a single bitrate recommendation for every stream; choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate and check the current destination requirements.

YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate and warns that network interruptions can break a stream. A continuous encoder-based stream also depends on the encoder and connection remaining available, so monitor stream quality rather than assuming a successful start guarantees stable operation. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Plan for long-stream interruptions and playback limits
Restarts and duration
Restream says it does not limit stream duration, but a server may be restarted during continuous streaming beyond 24 hours; it recommends restarting every 24 hours. Build planned restarts into an encoder workflow and verify how the chosen playback setup resumes. A scheduled prerecorded event with a loop capped at 10 repeats should not be treated as a perpetual stream. Restream’s duration guidance.

YouTube archive and DVR
Restream’s help page says YouTube archives streams under 12 hours. YouTube also says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If DVR is disabled, viewers cannot seek backward during the live broadcast. Do not promise viewers a full rewind or a complete archived recording for an around-the-clock stream. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Which approach fits a documentary channel?
| Approach | What it supports | Key limitation to check |
|---|---|---|
| Restream scheduled prerecorded event | Automatic start at a scheduled time; video loop documented up to 10 repetitions. | The documented loop is finite, so it does not establish a single endless 24/7 event. Storage and file-size limits depend on account tier. |
| Encoder-based continuous stream | Can provide a live input from encoder software when configured with the appropriate destination details. | Plan for connectivity interruptions and Restream’s recommended restart every 24 hours; validate recovery behavior. |
| Cloud service designed for 24/7 playback | YouTube’s encoder documentation lists Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. | Check the provider’s current capabilities, pricing, file limits, recovery behavior, and operating terms directly; the cited listing does not establish comparative reliability or plan details. |
